https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/MacBook_Pro_2007_Graphics_Freeze_Workaround

I actually just tried this work around and it happens to work perfectly, -for me-

I am also running Leopard 9A559, which I thought would fix the video driver issue but doesn't. I've been using '/console maxfps 30' and the sound fix addon that was posted. I played for about two hours in full-screen and didn't get any weird squares, blocks, missing textures or freezes. The only thing I did get was the usual missing sounds but I don't really care about that. So, if anyone is desperate enough, i would say try this and see if it works.

Whoa, terribly useful information on how to use older drivers! I will give this a shot

God...and just when I got my fps to 50+ on OSX using GLFaster...I ran the update without checking the support threads and boom! Only thing that fixes it is /console maxfps 30...and I'm too spoiled playing at 40+ fps now.

Thankfully this is on the MBPro and I set up a Windows partition using bootcamp. 30GB partition for Windows (thanks MSDN!) and WoW and I'm back to 60fps...and jeez it runs smoother too. If only I could do it this nicely in parallels...I hate having to leave OSX and boot into Windows to play WoW.

I don't think I'll even try playing WoW in OSX until Leopard is released, and hopefully the driver issue is fixed.

if you are recording a video using the new 2.2.x in-game mac video recording the stutter goes away completely. when you stop recording it returns. This may be related to the frame rate cap or be an independent effect. Turning on vertical sync also reduces the effect (although it kills my fps).

Video recording caps the in-game fps to the preset limit. This has the same effect as capping the in-game fps using the /console maxfps x command, which helps reduce the stutter effect caused by the MBP1.1SW Updater.

For what it's worth, the sequence mentioned previously seems to have reduced the stutter for me to almost nothing:

/console maxfps 30
/console glfaster 0
/console glfaster 1

I will still getting noticeable stutter until I added the last step. Now it is only in busy areas.

My FPS is bouncing between 20 and 30 much of the time. Tonight's Kara run will be an interesting test for me.

Follow up to my previous message.

I was doing the Simon Sez daily quest on the ogre plateau this morning when I got kicked back to the character load screen. Several attempts to log back in netted me "World Server Down" messages, so I quit back to the desktop and went and made coffee.

I came back about 15 minutes later and tried again. I successfully logged in and talked to several others who reported that they hadn't been disconnected.

After this login, the console commands no longer made any difference in stuttering. I was able to finish the Simon Sez quest and return to Shatt, but the stuttering remains.

Update to my previous...I really really hate having to boot to Windows so I have continued troubleshooting on the OSX side. I've gotten my FPS back up to 60+, but still the stuttering remains. I tried /console maxfps 30, but I just couldn't stand that after experiencing 60 fps, so I tried /console maxfps 45.

It seems the stuttering occurs only if my actual framerate drops below what I've set as max (as some people have stated prior). 45 seemed just below what I was normally experiencing without caps (was usually getting 50-60), and over time I have noticed that i have pretty much gotten rid of my stuttering. Yay! And 45fps is quite a decent max to have anyway, it looks great.

Only problem now is the mouse...mouse seems WAY jumpy and imprecise compared to Windows. I have installed USB Overdrive, but this only seems to make the problem worse. I've also tried with multiple mice just in case one type of hardware was not very compatible, but still no love. I have to turn sensitivity WAY down in order to not have my cursor flipping out every time I try to do something precise (small, short movements). Maybe I just drink too much coffee? :P If anyone has any advice in this area it would sorely appreciated.

For those who are wondering how I got rid of the stuttering, here were the exact steps I took:

1) Destroy the WTF folder
2) Log in, default settings
3) Tune settings a bit to get to 60fps (see my config below)
4) Set /console maxfps 45
5) Enjoy the non-stutttering, decently-high performance at 45fps

Here is my graphics config (I really wish I could set up full AA and 4x multisample but the framerate drops considerably. I can live without it if I don't have to boot into Windows though.):

Did that help you, and are you able to get high performance (~45fps) on your MBP now? Hopefully others will have seen my post + config and be able to get their MBPs back up to performing nicely. What a wonderful piece of machinery.

I am giving them one more week to update the driver and then i am going to use your fix... Frustrating that it's been over a month and they can't seem to take the time and fix the driver issue... Super frustrating!

Running around in the Test Server and getting 60fps in Org and ZA and around 30 elsewhere. No stuttering. No max fps. So some of those graphic tweaks are definitely doing their jobs.

EDIT: Full Screen Glow will still send your FPS into the crapper. But the other things like spell detail can stay high without effecting FPS.

Now that the official release date of Leopard has been announced, I wonder, will it include the repaired OpenGL, or is that still "to come"?

I can find out if this bug is fixed in 10.5.0 GM as soon as we have access to it, which we don't yet.

BUMP!

Any chance of gettin this topic to be a sticky as i keep seeing new threads popping up about mac framerate and this one is answering questions and growing fitfully. No point in crowding the forums with the same question over and over and over and over again eh?

I hope it's also fixed in Tiger, as I don't think people are going to be too happy if upgrading is the only fix.
