  • 0. Resto Shaman/Shadow Priest- Worst 2 man team?   03/05/2007 10:38:01 AM PST

My friend and I have teamed up for the 2 VS 2 Areana since we are available at the same times to play in the arena. It seems that a Shaman and Priest are not a very good combo in the arena. We are at an extremely unfair advantage against any team that has some crowd control. We have very little crowd control and not much ways to counter them. A mage will keep me sheeped (have had it done 4 times in a fight on several occasions). A rogue will SAP the Shaman and then team up on me. A warlock can chain fear. A druid can cyclone.

We can do pretty well against teams that do not have one of the before mentioned classes with crowd control. I can't think of any strategies that could possibly work against these kinds of teams with the abilities we have at our disposal. I am open to ideas if I am missing anything. I want to work towards the gladiator gear. Seems like it will be much harder if I want to stay with my friend though.

Suggestions?

Have you ever been hit by an acceptable slap in the face?

Ya. Dispel works if they don't sheep me. However, most are smart enough to know this so they pretty much always sheep me. We put out the grounding totem but that is a temp fix - they can easily get rid of it then sheep. Of course this has no effect on being SAP'd by a rogue which seems to be a bigger problem. There are ways to try and stop sheeping -- but in the end a halfway decent mage will be able to pull it off if they are paying attention. Have seen a lot of combos that have more than one player that can crowd control -- so even if you can stop one -- stopping both is almost immpossible. Like a mage that will try and sheep with a warlock that will chain fear. So stopping one is not that big of a deal.

Have the shaman not be stupid if you're getting polyed. It's called earth shock.

Grounding totem > earth shock.

Grounding Totem has a 15 second cooldown, and takes about .5 second to destroy with a wand.

Opinions are like butts. Everyone has one and no one thinks theirs stinks.

Thanks -- this will help a little if we suspect a rogue. Although they will just SAP me. Although the shammy may be able to survive the 2 rogues long enough for me to come out and shield/heal.

Of course for the poly we can try earth shock / silence. However - that is assuming they don't have another class with them causing other issues like a warlock chain fear. It seems like we tend to get groups where both players that have crowd control. When we have none and they have 2 methods - we are starting off at a failrly bad disadvantage.

Any other Shaman or Priests that are in a 2 man group like this? What have your experiences been?

To the OP... Polymorph has a 30 yard range, and your SW: Pain and Mind Blast have a 36 yard range. So if the fight is just starting and you don't want to risk getting polymorphed, try to keep your distance. The shaman can try to Earth Shock or drop a Grounding Totem to counter the mage's polymorph, and of course you can dispel it off the shaman. It may sound weird, but you could kind of kite a mage, make him come to you, then Silence, Mind Blast, Psychic Scream, and then keep nuking. Also, the arenas have structures that allow for some interesting way to play with line of sight and the limitations of your opponents... The mage certainly can't polymorph you from the other side of the arena if you run behind a pillar, for example. Oh yeah, and that would be a good place to hide the Grounding Totem and other totems as well.

As for the CC issues against a warlock, just have the shaman keep a Tremor Totem down at all times. It removes Fear/Charm/Sleep effects. You could make it more difficult for the opponent to try to get rid of it (even though the shaman can just drop another one) by having the shaman drop other types of totems as well.

Ya -- this is probably the best bet. Going to take some practice to get it down though. Would require a fair amount of finess to pull off depending on what the combo is -- more than one players abilities to worry about ;-) One slip up and it can be all over. I guess I don't feel we have a spell that if we get it off succesfully we win -- as those with crowd control abilities are able to. Thanks for the input.

Any idea how to handle 2 rogues? Seems like a no win situation at the moment.

I feel your pain man. Shamans arent the out of the box PWN PWN OP class you'd like it to be. But played right you'll find op class combos eatin dirt. Have your priest get Imp Mana Burn and have him spam it like crazy until there is NO mana left. Not even enough for a rank 1. Your job is to PURGE and HEAL like your life depends on it. You get MS'd, get rdy to pop bloodlust/Herpoism and heal heal heal. Once your opponenets have no mana go to town on them. Bring some pvp water with you, gwolf it to the nearest safe zone and CRUSH'em. Other than that. ya man, sux to be a shaman in arena. A geared elemental's also a good bet seeing as how there lightning bolts decimate everything. Just make sure you can heal through hell, and you'll see more wins.

This is a bad combination. Shadow priest doesn't have the burst, healing reduction or mana to be sole dps in a heal/dps team. Have your friend respec elemental and that'd be a better combination, but still not great. Your 2v2 match is mage, rogue or warlock.

I'm getting tired of all of the shadow priest nerfs.

This combo isn't as bad as it seems. Yes, there are a few combos that is extremely hard to beat, special the duel rogue groups. About sap, they can't sap you when your in combat, so one quick DOT, and the sap option is gone, unless its duel rogues. Shammy's are amazing healers, and all resto shammys should have the arena trinket that gives 31 resil w/ the flash heal. Our group is starting to do alot better. Now that my resil is getting up there, and i can take alot more hits, along w/ Martyrdom i respecc'd to get, shammys purge and totems, its not that bad of a combo as you think. The shammy has to be a good player, cause he has ALOT to do besides just healin. Shadow Priests do ALOT of dmg in a short time, so if you can keep there healer silenced and feared, shouldn't be much of a prob. I did learn that one way to win against a pally and a cc or other is Mana burn. Get the pally down to nothing, then bring out your fiend and go to town. Looking forward to see how we do this upcoming week, w/ all the new gear i just got. gl guys
