Known Issues

In-game settings

Vista may do a few things that are out of the ordinary when you installed it in the C:\Program Files\ or C:\Program Files (x86) folders - it may either not apply your settings or it won't delete them properly.

* Resetting settings or settings that does not apply properly - Vista may deny you write access from the World of Warcraft folder if it is installed in the Program Files folder. You can remedy this by either right-clicking the game and selecting "Run as administrator" or to move it outside of the Program Files folder.

* Settings and mods that won't stay deleted - If you installed the game in the Program Files folder, Vista may redirect the game to look in another set of folders: c:\Users\<name>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\World of Warcraft\
It will save all of your custom configurations there instead of the C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft folder. You can delete your settings by going to the folder above or moving the game outside of the World of Warcraft folder.

Patching

* You may see the message "Failed to apply patch. Please try again later" after clicking Restart. To get around this, right-click your World of Warcraft Shortcut and click on "Run as administrator".
http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p276/bitsf/vista_admin_02.png

* You may see the following message when applying a patch:

Q u o t e:
The file "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\World of Warcraft\World of Warcraft.lnk.Temporary" could not be created. If this problem persists, you may be able to solve it by uninstalling and then reinstalling the game. If you are unable to correct this problem, please contact Blizzard Technical Support. (InstallerFile::Create)
To get around this, right-click your World of Warcraft Shortcut (or patch executable, depending on what you run to get to the patch) and click on "Run as administrator".
http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p276/bitsf/vista_admin_02.png

* Launcher and tools updates will have problems similar to the patches where data may not be saved. A symptom of this is the Launcher tells you that it downloaded something and asks you to hit OK, then it won't do anything else. It'll loop this each time you try to run it. Right-click on the World of Warcraft shortcut and select "Run as administrator"
http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p276/bitsf/vista_admin_02.png

Network

* Stuck on Success! - Some users behind the Linksys RV042 and RV082 routers may get stuck on Connected or Success while trying to connect with Windows Vista. There is a February firmware that will fix it - http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_CASupport_C1&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1166859841299&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=4129937314B307

You can also try to run this command in a command prompt as an administrator if the firmware update does not work. Hit the Start menu, then search for cmd.exe. Right-click it, then run as admin. Copy and paste this line in:

Netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

Screenshots not in the World of Warcraft folder

If your screenshots aren't saving in the World of Warcraft folder, try checking where the game is installed. If it is installed in the Program Files folder, your screenshots may be redirected here:
c:\Users\<name>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Screenshots\

Video

* Intel 945 & 950 Graphics
Users are reporting that it will crash into a black screen. A message saying that the Display driver stopped responding and has recovered will follow. It has been reproduced in-house. Some users reported success using a new set of drivers for the 945/950 series. These are released 2/4/07.
Update (3/13/07) - There is a newer driver available that was released 2/25. These may cause you to revert back to having a blackscreen problem. Go to the driver links below and scroll down to the bottom. Click on Previously Released software to get the working 2/4 drivers

Desktop 945: http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=2102&lang=eng
Mobile 945: http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=2301

If the driver package (.exe) won't install on the system, try the ZIP (.zip) package on the same page. There is a readme file there too with installation instuctions.

Reported Issues

Audio

* Sound popping and crackling - Some users are getting popping/crackling sounds under Windows Vista.
- A reported solution is to toggle VSync in the in-game Video options.
- Another reported solution is to disable Desktop Composition (Aero).
- Some users are reporting sound issues in this game (as well as other apps) and may have a USB hub attached with devices plugged into them. Try unplugging the hubs and attach the device directly to your computer to see if it helps.
- Our QA department was able to get a computer to exhibit crackling and popping issues. They were able to resolve it by installing the latest video card drivers. Yes, it is not a typo - video card drivers.

Network

* Disconnections - Some users may experience game disconnection shortly after logging into the game with Vista. Check to see if the game is creating a Cache folder with files in t he World of Warcraft folder. If it isn't, try moving the game folder out of the Program Files folder and try again.

* Unknown players and NPCs, fast disconnects - One user reported problems with Unknown Entity. Disabling the Vista firewall solved the problem.

Video

* nVidia GeForce 6150/6200 - May experience slow framerates with "Death Effects" on. Try unchecking it in the Video Options

*nVidia GeForce cards may experience slow framerates. You may want to try the basic troubleshooting steps - http://www.blizzard.com/support/wow/?id=aww0791p

The new nVidia Beta driver resolves the slow framerate for Vista 32-bit. Try it out - http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x86_162.22.html

If you are having trouble running the game in SLI under Vista 64-bit, try the latest nVidia 64-bit beta drivers (as of 7/23/07) - http://www.nzone.com

Performance Tips

* Try turning off the Windows Sidebar. It may consume system resource that the game can take advantage of.

* Make sure other tasks are not competing for system resource. Use a utility such as the Windows Task Manager (taskmgr), Windows Performance Manager (perfmon) or Process Explorer (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/default.mspx) to get a deeper look.

* If you are using multiple monitors and play the game in Windowed mode, try disabling Windows Aero.

* Some people are experiencing game slowdowns when Vista is indexing the files for faster searching. You can try disabling it by doing this: Control Panel -> System and Maintenance -> Administrative Tools -> Services. Scroll down to Windows Search and double click it. Set it to Disabled.

* Some systems may cause the game to run a bit choppy if your thumb drive for ReadyBoost is being accessed. You can try checking this by unplugging the thumb drive and see if it stops running choppy.

* Some people are reporting a performance increase by setting the game to run in Windows XP Service Pack 2 compatibility mode. To do this, right-click the game shortcut and go to Properties. Click the Compatibility tab, then check the Compatibility checkbox.

If you are having performance problems, try posting your System Rating as well as your system specs (processor, motherboard, memory, video card, etc). There's a System Rating that will benchmark your system. Use it to your advantage. Winkey+Pause -> Windows Experience Index

    Example:
Work machine: Pentium 4 2.0Ghz, 1024 MB RAM, Radeon 9800 Pro.
    Windows Vista Business 32-bit
    Processor - 3.1
    Memory - 3.9
    Graphics - 5.9
    Gaming Graphics - 4.5
    Primary hard disk - 5.3

    Home machine: Athlon 64 x2 3800+, 2048 MB RAM, GeForce 7800GT.
    Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit
    Processor - 4.8
    Memory - 4.9
    Graphics - 5.9
    Gaming Graphics - 5.7
    Primary hard disk - 5.3

Im running an asus tablet pc with the intel 950 gma chipset. 2 gig of ram with the 4mb of cach on the core 2 duo. The computer is more then capable to run WoW. I have done everything i can do fix the problem with the display driver igfx not responding and am wondering if there is anything else that i can do to fix this. Considering the research i have have done i have come to the conclusion that this is a problem with vista and WoW. most of the drivers i have discoverd are not the up to date drivers and do not fix the problem in fact they make it worse for the computer as a whole.

Just installed Vista, disabled authentication, lowered firewalls etc so that everything actually works. I installed WoW, and downloaded all patches completely fine. The game did not start up after the last patch. Now, when I try to open it, the screen goes black and the program doesn't respond. One time I got the error message, but usually everything just stops. The launcher doesn't come up, even though it had been fine when installing the patches....should i just try to reinstall? Because I don't think Vista is blocking anything anymore. Also tried to run as admin but that produced the same results.

I have scanned the Vista posts - not looking at all of the several hundred, but trying to get a feel for the problems out there - and I cannot find any reference to my problem...

When I try to launch the game I get an immediate error and full stop. It claims to be a problem with the video card or video driver. (wrong number of columns)! I don't understand this error, nor can I find a fix in any of the technical forums. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have not been able to play WoW since I moved to the new Vista computer.
I have reinstalled WoW, I have deleted the WTF folder and other folders as directed by various posts - nothing helps. I downloaded the latest drivers from nVidia - still no help. I am considering wiping my hard drive and loading XP, but that would be a drastic solution.

i recently got a new windows vista computer. i installed WoW with no issues and everything worked fine up until gameplay. every few minutes the screen will freeze, blink black, then return to normal and i can resume playing. it happens enough to be annoying (especially during combat where there were several instances i died in these few seconds lol) i have no idea what to do to make it stop if anyone knows how to stop this problem please tell me

Sounds like you have the Intel Graphics issue. The way to fix it is to update your graphics driver. If you go to the support section of your computers manufacturers website, you should be able to download the newest driver from there.

    Datth ,

The beta drivers from nZone solve the inability for WoW to be run via windowed mode in 64x SLI
for 8 series cards. Also a few people have had fixes when using this 64x driver.
