So why is it that when you get to 60 the gear from Outlands suddenly starts looking like the gear you wore at level 10?

I mean seriously, I saw some robes called "Confession Robes of XYZ" for a level 66 player and it looks like the same robe that Blood Elf casters get at level 10 or so.

Part of the allure of gear, for me anyways, is not just the stats but the look. I don't want to look at level 70 like I just left Dun Morogh, what is up with this?

I had to wait till 70 to get a robe that didn't look like crap (http://www.thotbott.com/?i=59165), however even that is mostly a side grade to a blue quest reward from hellfire. But I took the side grade because I couldn't stand the tunic (sorry cloth tunics look bad on all casters). Most priests I see in dps gear close to 70 end up wearing (http://www.thotbott.com/?i=58131) and I just cry for how horrid they look on female casters (I'll give you a hint, they don't cover much).

Maybe it's actually a Blizzard ploy to cut down on the people asking for gold, especially since it's been said that Outlands is a gold-making machine. But one look at a mid-level-60 toon and the gold beggar's are probably crossing you off their lists, lol.

Well, leveling items are almost always go to look more or less "plain". We want the end-game items to really stand out, both in ability/power and the way they look. The items you had at 60 were the end-game items, they were the best of the best and their look really showed that visually just running around the city. As you're leveling again you may be finding better gear than what you had, but it's not the uber end-game gear, and so it sort of has a plain look to match. Once you reach the level cap again then you begin to progress through the sets, and really get a nice and cohesive look with some cool... I don't know, fireworks shooting from your kneecaps, or whatever, and everyone has a BBQ before going to sit on the grass and watch the grand finale exploding from your patella.

so it is, so it's always been

First blood-drinking horses and now this.

You're frisky tonight. XD

Edit: btw, op, I do agree. I've seen quite a few level 65's+ running around and their gear isn't very aesthetically pleasing. In fact, it doesn't even look like there was progression from level 30.

It is somewhat ironic that my druid wore a Feathermoon Headdress for so long that I forgot it wasn't part of her hairstyle, upgraded to Dirigible Crash Helmet with the expansion, then found a Headdress of the Sleeper cheap on the auction house..... with the exact same graphic as the Feathermoon Headdress. Oh well, at least it looks good on her.

Are you implying that I shouldn't have to sacrifice the great looks of my Tier 4 and 5 sets for the stats of the green Netherweave set?

With set bonuses, I'm still barely holding onto my Warlord's robe, really only for the purpose that mages (troll mages especially) look absolutely ass-backwards in a tunic.

All cloth chest pieces should be robes. It may be a bit too uniform, but in this case, uniformity beats looking like a tard.

Well I know that I've found some decent-looking gear on the way to 60, but I'm just not seeing it on my main in Outlands. And we're not talking "sort of plain", we're talking it's way-recycled old stuff. In fact, I even saw a 60+ robe in the AH that is the same patchy blue robe that this avatar is wearing! For myself, I will never have Tier-level stuff, I'm too casual. I understand that this mean that I won't have clouds of smoke puffing from my visor and all that, but I hope the only other alternative is not looking like I crashed into the clown tent at the Moscow Circus. Hopefully there is decent-looking level 70 non-Tier gear.... /fingers crossed
