Though it has repaired many graphics related issues with certain models and fixed an issue with memory corruption in the Intel X3100 GPU driver for MacBooks.

There appears to be an issue now, after this upgrade, with some systems with 8800 class video (MBP, Mac Pro, iMac 3.06GHz). World of Warcraft players may may see big slowdowns in the game (<2FPS) if you have certain options enabled, which Blizzard is checking out:

- vsync (prime suspect)
- multisampling
- fullscreen

If the game is working correctly, it is recommended to hold off on the upgrade, for now.

Blizzard is working with Apple to get this resolved as soon as possible.

Edit: 10.5.5 resolves these classes of issue in our testing.

The only issue I have right now is that more than a few people will put the card down to 30 FPS pretty quick. No horrible unplayability but it's kinda lousy.

By the way, I suggest you contact Marcel Bresink marcel@bresink.de to discuss the problems he's found with the driver.

There must be some issue with the 8600M, I've been tweaking my video settings more in the last week than I have since I received my MBP in Oct.

Thank you ALL, so far, for your posts.

As soon as I hear anything I will post here, believe me. I saw the 10.5.3 upgrade as a resolution to many graphic issues, and it has been, but the side effects are a bit ...

Let me know how I'm doing...

Just sucks because everything seemed to be working fine. I wonder if we are going to have to wait 3 months for a resolution like we had to last time. I am thinking i should be archiving for now on when i do updates.

You can resolve it immediately by doing an Archive&Install of OS X back to 10.5.0 (or whatever version came on your computer) followed by manually updating to 10.5.2. The 10.5.2 combo updater is available on the Apple support site.

I have an MBP with the 8600M GT (128mb) and have run into this issue. Nothing I've done seems to ward it off any longer or impact it in any way. From what I can tell, this is an issue that is messing with the graphics I/O system or caching system of these particular cards and has little-to-nothing to do with individual settings.

It may seem a little sad, but I come here now and wait for word on how the game is performing under the new OS when there is an update before I install it. It's the only reason I haven't upgraded my MBP yet, and I'm really glad I didn't.

Dear Blue,

Thanks for your attention on this. Maybe you could point us to the appropriate Apple support forum where the community could "express" our concerns in true WoW forum fashion. :)

Cheers.

Hello Saandstorm,

Nothing really specific to World of Warcraft on the Apple discussions site, but here's a general Mac OS 10.5 discussion site (Apple's version of Forums) :

To add to Tigerclaw's solution:

Here's the Apple support site that discusses Archive & Install:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306517

Archive and Install choice:

This option moves existing system files to a folder named Previous System, and then installs a new copy of Mac OS X. This option is available only for volumes with Mac OS X already installed. Usually, if you select this method, you will want to also select (check) "Preserve Users and Network Settings" which imports existing user accounts, home folders, and your network settings into the new system.

After you do this, there will be a folder with the Previous System files, you may want to trash this folder, since the old folder will take up about 4 GB of space.

Also after you update the system back to OS 10.5.2, I would recommend repairing your disk permissions:

1.) click on the Finder icon in the Dock
2.) open the Applications folder
3.) open the Utilities folder
4.) double click on the Disk Utility application icon
5.) select the hard drive the game is installed on
6.) select the First Aid option
7.) click on the Repair Disk Permissions button

Let me know how I'm doing...

It's not just 8x00 users. I have a 24" white iMac with a 7600GT and I'm getting the framerate issues as well. The game will chug down to the teens (30fps at the very very best) after a time of playing. Sometimes it'll do that as soon as I launch the game. Let's hope that the rumors of 10.5.4 hitting in the next few weeks are true...

That's probably because nVidia's drivers encumber ALL their cards in one single package binary while using separate subsets in that binary to use a card's specific features. So if there's a memory leak in the driver, it affects all cards that use the feature the leak is in.

It's funny... I'm a pretty big fan of nVidia as my graphics vendor of choice on the PC. And I was excited when I bought my first Mac because at the time they were on nVidia cards, which were head and shoulders over ATI in OpenGL performance in Linux.

But time and time again ATI continues to end up being the better choice as far as OS X goes. Surprising really considering the source... But true nonetheless.
