There has been some confusion regarding the changes to Arena Team and Personal rating calculations in patch 2.4.2 for those players with 100% participation on their team so we’d like to clarify how the system works now.

The adjustment to a team’s personal rating can vary based on the average personal rating of the other team while team ratings will always adjust based directly on the team rating of the other team. If the average personal rating of the players queuing for a game is more than 150 points below the team’s rating, the team will be queued against an opponent matching or similar to the average personal rating. Adjustments to your personal rating are based on the ratings by which the opposing team was queued.
  • If the opposing team was queued based on their team rating, your personal rating will be adjusted based on their team rating.

  • If the opposing team was queued based on their average personal rating, your personal rating will be adjusted based on their average personal rating.

Example:

  • Team A has a rating of 1550. Team B has a rating of 1750.

  • Team A has an average personal rating of 1520 for the members participating in the match. Team B has an average personal rating of 1490 for the members participating in the match.

  • Team A wins. Team A’s team rating is adjusted based off of a win over Team B’s team rating of 1750.

  • All members of Team A have their personal ratings adjusted based off of a win over Team B’s average personal rating of 1490 but it will be a smaller gain when compared to the rating their team got.


This change promotes having teams compete against players who’s ratings statistically match up best against them. In turn this will help provide the most competitive environment possible in the Arena.

Thank you for effectively destroying our ability to play for multiple teams. Teamquit and join a new team? Enjoy your two hours of 0-3 point games just to get your personal rating back up again!

All you'd have to do is make personal rating be team-dependant, so if I leave a team and rejoin it, personal rating would be restored. You'd still eliminate just as much win trading, point selling, and rerolling, but those of us that want to play on multiple teams would not be inconvenienced.

I don't want to have to tell players that I've been playing with for 3 seasons on 2200+ rated teams "sorry, I'm picking another team over you, find a new mage".

only, it doesn't create a competitive environment. Teams are exploiting this by simply leaving and rejoining so that they can have lower personal ratings and face easier teams.

Pls just get rid of this failure called "arena" and pls give us back our MMO.....battlegrounds or new improved versions of those is what is pvp.. Not his terribly imbalanced, cool down blowing, nuke feast called "arena". anything outside 2v2 is decided in the first 30 seconds whos gonna win... -=(

You do realize people are exploiting this new system to get boosted to 1850/2000 rating while fighting only 1500-1600 rated teams, don't you?

Disclaimer: Despite the seriousness of the topic, this incredibly confusing and convoluted blue "Clarification" post, as well as a previous blue post "When Season 4 starts this should be less of a problem due to all starting at 1500" (thus admitting there is a problem)... provided the best laugh I've ever had on these forums.

Instead of your fantasy example of a 1550 team beating one 200 points above them, here's a better one:

Team A is 2000 but a bunch of members just rejoined - it's average PRs are 1600. It fights and beats a real new 1600 team full of lesser geared and skilled players. You see, cause 99% of the time a team ranked 100s higher will win. The poor 1600 team has now faced a 2000 team, had NO CHANCE, and has LOST 15 PERSONAL POINTS while losing 0-1 team rating only. This is your "competitive environment" - the 2000 team had a choice and manually reset their PRs whenever they please to fight a 1600 team that had no choice in getting queued and losing vs them.

The fact that many 100% legit teams are now sitting with PRs 50 or more below their deserved team rating is also acceptable? From YOUR OWN EXAMPLE, how the hell does it make sense that when a 1550 pulls off an amazing victory vs a much stronger 1750 team, they gain fewer personal rating than team rating? Why the hell do teams trying their best to reach 1800 for their weapons actually need to reach 1900 just so their PRs catch up?

5 members only, each 100% played. ALL with personal ratings of 1688, ON A 1749 TEAM. 61 pt difference, from 10 games played. From a system than queued them vs a team 500 rating above them, AND took away 61 personal points. Hey, if this keeps up their TR will get to 100 over the PRs, and even if they earn "Challenger" or better with their PRs alone they'll be ineligible for any title :) "This change promotes having teams compete against players who’s ratings statistically match up best against them. Final Edit:

A) 2.4.2 punishes any changes in team members. WHY. Why is it wrong, over a 7 month boring season, to have FUN trying out new combos and playing with different friends, especially when just 1 out of 3 brackets gives points and titles, the other two are just for fun.

B) WHY IN THE BLUE HELL does the "punishment" for team-hopping ALSO punish other teams that have never changed team-mates. Whether the higher-ranked team power-level the new members' PRs from 1500 or just start a new team, they will still get matched vs low-rated opponents and take their hard earned ratings. EVERY SINGLE TIME ANYONE JOINS A TEAM, this will happen for potentially dozens of games until the new guys PR gets within 150 of his teams. All these games they are beating hapless opposition in 1500s to 1700s to 1900s, taking points from all.

C) This system facilitates and encourages GRIEFING. all 2000 type teams have been sitting on 5000 pts banked and full S3 for months... and two months into S4 they'll be capped again, making all ratings meaningless. And in any case ALL players have 2/3 brackets they don't use for points or title, making ratings meaningless again. So they can, anytime and over and over, reset average PRs to 1500, 1600, 1900, whatever they wish, precisely... and beat up on teams 100s of rating below them for kicks. There is zero, nada, negative repercussions ot resetting PRs, no downside. So instead of searching the empty outlands for someone to gank, they can grief teams. and this is more than a GY run - its real PRs lost, teammates quitting in frustration, hours wasted for teams trying to get to their goals of 1600 or whatever.

Perhaps they should give arena points based on the average personal rating of all members of the team.

You shouldn't team hop. Sucks you have to spend 3 hours regrinding your PR, but...not really.

If you want to be on more than 1 team in a particular arena bracket, roll an alt.

Adjusting Arena point distribution and ratings to fight team and point selling is great.

However, does the system need to be so confusing? This is a clarifying post, and it is wildly confusing. This reminded me of the original Honor system, the one with weekly calcuations.

Any chance this is being looked into to be smoothed out a bit for WotLK perhaps?

No. You will never lose TR or PR for a win. You will never gain TR or PR for a loss.
