How did they go about selecting people to participate in the beta test?

Beta for Burning Crusade? Showing up to Blizzcon helped. Being in a large raiding guild helped (or otherwise being 'famous'). Aside from that, it was random.

I've heard being #1 player in Billy Vs. Snakeman for a day gets you an invite too. But that part is a lie.

Like Anime? Like Ninjas? Like MMORPGs? You should play Billy Vs. SNAKEMAN.

Completely random after that, and if you were picked there was a high chance you'd get 2 invites instead of just 1.

It's all in the tree price...

They give you a puppy and you raise it for 10 years, then they mail
a plane ticket for you and your dog to Blizzard HQ and you must
kill it without hesitation while saying, "Blizzard before anything else."

Then you get a beta invite.

also you dont have to be clever or funny to get into beta.

Q Why not just let casual players get rewards comparable to those from raids
A It would be almost impossible for us to do

Developers who were involved in mod development also got invites, but only the active ones and in the last stage of beta (at least that's when I got in)

here, have a 'new Cookie(new java.lang.String("Cookie"), new java.lang.String("Chocolate Chip"));'

We print up sheets of paper with people's account names on it and then hang them up on a big wall. We then put on blindfolds and get out the darts. Sometimes it gets a bit dangerous if someone tries to get fancy and spins the person throwing the darts, but it seems to work...

Or, for a more serious answer, it's largely random. We do our best to make sure we have a good mix of players. I've seen it before where one friend has posted on the forum about another friend who got in but they didn't and why didn't they when their friend is the one that only plays casually and they (the op) are the one that is hardcore. We're not looking to pick one demographic to help do the testing. We look for a good mixture of people with different play styles and interests. It gives a decent snapshot of what issues need fixed or tweaked prior to release.

So the people who told me stories about how they got into beta in "colorful" ways were lying to me?

That's a relief. :P

A little nonsense now and then, is relished by the wisest men.
