Epics weren't replaced by greens with the first xpac. What makes you think they would be with the second? I had some blues replaced by greens. But no epics.

QFT, I don't know where people were picking up epics with 10 stamina and 20 attack power, but no-one every replaced any epics with any greens.

I did. I replaced every one of my epics from the old world with greens. They were much better items than the epics they replaced.

A valid argument might be that people in T3 weren't replacing epics with greens, because they weren't. If Blizzard follows that trend, people with Karazhan quality epics will replace them early, and maybe with greens, while people in those butt-ugly Sunwell suits will be able to ignore equipment until they start raiding again at 80.

Did you have MC and BoE epics? Even the T2 stuff lasted until 65 easy.

your ideas intrigue me and I would like to subscribe to your newsletter

I replaced all of my epics with greens, but all my epics were from ZG and Molten Core. I don't think the people with the higher end epics started replacing their gear until they started doing level 70 instances.

I think that weapon you spend 150 badges on is going to be safe at least until you get close to level 80.

I am wondering about my three alts. I have my level 61 warlock doing the circuit for her blue cloths every four days. I am wondering if I would just be better off selling the cloths and saving all my money for epic flyers for all of my toons. Of course I could accomplish that by getting all 4 to level 70 and doing nothing but dailies for a month or two.

I guess I didn't think of tier 0 'epics'. I guess some of the quest greens could swap out for those if you didn't mind breaking sets.

But raiders, people who were wearing T > 0, maybe blues but never greens.

And considering how easy epics are, I don't see a need for rebalancing gear like BC did. If they were going to, I think they'd do it with shiny new stat types.

It's going to be ratings decay that does it this time.

Eventually, yes, but not with the first drops. I was in epics coming into outlands and wore most of my stuff through the mid-sixties before I started repping pieces.

I have a friend that obsesses about specific armor or weapon items and drags my healer around to that instance or place OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

This is like the set pieces that would drop off of bosses in Strath or LBRS... it was horrible.

Why do this to yourselves? There is better gear in the next patch or the next XPac almost always, don't frustrate yourself.

Another person getting gear that is almost as good as yours, through other means does not shrink your manhood irl.

You are greatly exaggerating the rate at which things were upgraded. I upgraded a small handful of items as I leveled from 60 to 70. And didn't upgrade much at all before my first entry into Kara and Gruul. In fact, the majority of our guild was still in mostly tier 3 gear for our first Gruul kill.

Granted I'm a caster and Blizzard has done an absolutely horrible job with caster itemization and these same thing wouldn't likely happen with melee characters.

I will likely be wearing 4 pieces of tier6, my crafter tier6 robes and gloves, and likely a large portion of my Sunwell epics all the way through till 80. Unless of course I quit or change to a deathknight. Both of which are highly likely at this point since Blizzard hasn't even hinted at being able to improve casters yet.

Q u o t e:
Wow, you people still havent figured out how an MMO works have you?

Gold will be devauled again too. The "work" you are putting into gearing your toon will become totally meaningless, you are wasting every second of the time you put into it.

Try not to be shocked when it happens again in the 3rd expansion.

Take it easy. I don't think people are suggesting they'll be running around at 80 in T5. There's just not a lot of evidence that suggests that 70 epics will be as immediately replaceable. I'd be disappointed if I hadn't replaced most everything 4 or 5 levels in, though (of course, with my gear that's pretty much guaranteed).

My nelf druid was the first on the server to have full Wildheart. Beat out another guy by like 1 hour.

A lot will depend on where you are with the level cap epic gear acquiring.
Level 60 MC gear didn't last near as long in TBC as did level 60 Naxx gear.
Similarly I would expect level 70 Kara/Gruul gear to fall to the wayside much quicker, than BT/MH/SP epics.

Life sucks. Get a helmet.

Yes, and some of the small party and solo crapics they put in to try and shut up the people who weren't happy with the old endgame. They were purple painted crap, sure enough, but you didn't qualify any further than the purple.

Well this is pretty much a staple of any MMO , when a new expansion comes out the gear is better than previous. So yes expected to have your gear replaced shortly after expansion comes out.

My ZG epics lasted till about LV63-64 but mostly because the old world stuff was mutli function, you didn't have T1 Tanking and T1 DPS sets like now. I replaced them with some of the new pure DPS plate I came across for leveling.

The FM PVP stuff I picked up after the honor change lasted me to LV70 and I started collecting tank gear again.

I would guess S3/S4 gear and T5/T6/Sunwell gear will last you a good ways on the trip to 80 unless there is a couple new stats we start to see on WoTLK gear that make the new stuff more desirable.

IMO the only benefit of having your TBC gear last longer into the Xpac is more gold from vendoring quest rewards. Or if you are an enchanter, creating new enchanting mats as opposed to equiping them over what you are currently wearing.

It's been stated by blues (sorry I don't have a source for you, but I lurk these forums enough to know), albeit in a somewhat cryptic way, that this will be happening again. So all the work I'm putting in to gearing my alts is pretty much pointless.

Also, you should see this coming like a giant comet- they made honor so much easier to gain in 2.4 in anticipation that everyone would have a chance to enjoy the gear briefly before it is replaced by greens in a few months.

One of the goals in expansions is to level the playing field a bit for players and we like providing extra opportunities for players who (just as an example) want to get to high-end content but are currently far behind on things.

Keep in mind that the availability of higher level items is greater than it was before the launch of The Burning Crusade.

So take that for what it's worth. :)
