Ever since patch 2.4 I have been having a problem in which my screen will turn black, and i'll have to hard restart my computer in order to go about my business. This usually happens at a loading screen in game, but it has happened just randomly. Any tips would be greatly apreciated.

thanks,

Jaxex,

Can you tell us more information about your computer? You can find most of the information if you go to Start -> Run -> type dxdiag and press Enter. (Windows Vista: Press the Windows Key (the key with the Windows logo on your keyboard) + R (at the same time). Type in DXDIAG and press Enter or click 'OK', this will open the DirectX diagnostic tool.)

I'll need the following info:

Processor:

I am having the same black screen problem. It happens most often when I am loading a dungeon. However, it also occurs in random times when i'm playing. I found that if i am not in a windowed mode, i can alt-tab out of the program and open a seperate window, log back in, and try to continue playing, but if it happens once, it generally happens a lot more and playing becomes impossible.

Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.070227-2254)

You'll also want to download the latest drivers. See the (Microsoft Corporation) next to your card name. That means your video card driver was installed via Windows Update or a similar fashion. Go to http://ati.amd.com and download the latest driver for your All-In-Wonder 9000 card.

For those of you using Nvidia, there was a new update for drivers released on the 15th of October, at least with a lot of the more common cards. I don't know if this will fix the problem, I'm having it as well and the drivers are downloading as I'm typing this, so we'll see.

I'm having the same problem. Just reinstalled windows completely, just reinstalled wow, and bang it happens again. This problem only started about a week and a bit ago. And still no blizzard reply. I've reinstalled everything, and updated my video and MB drivers. it happens at completely random times. Personally I think its an Audio error. I cought a flash of something before I froze up once and it had Audio codec on it....however it flashed for a second and I couldn't see the rest.

I was having this problem for quite a long time and I tried so many different things to solve it. In the end, I figured that it must be a power supply problem. After upgrading my video card, I didn't know that it had recommended a 450 Watt PSU. I opened my computer and saw I only had a 350 Watt PSU. I was about to buy a new PSU, but tried several final solutions. I have a ATI Radeon HD 3650. I opened up ATI Catalyst Control Center (a control panel that comes with the video card) and I lowered my AGP write speed from 8x to 4x. This fixed the problem immediately. Some things I tried in addition though before that were:

-Updated video card drivers
-Cleaned out computer using compressed air
-Placed a desk fan toward the exposed side of my computer in case it was a overheating issue
-Reinstalled WoW
-Opened WoW in -opengl and -windowed mode
-Ran WoW repair utility (although this slightly changed the problem in that I was able to get an error report out of it)
-Spammed CTRL, ALT, Delete - this sometimes gave me a blue screen, sometimes nothing
-Deleted my WTF, Cache, and Interface folders
-Disabled VPU Recovery in my ATI Catalyst Control Center
-Set to lowest graphics on WoW
-In Windows XP, disabled Write Combining (right click your desktop -> Properties -> Settings -> Advanced -> Troubleshoot -> Uncheck the Write Combining)
-Set my AGP aperture to exactly 128 MB in the BIOS.

I scoured the internet finding these potential solutions from people who had the same problem. I tried them one by one and if they didn't work, I would set my computer back how it was if necessary (For example, disabling Write Combining didn't work, so I enabled it again; opening WoW in -opengl and -windowed didn't work, so I put it back to normal). If anyone stumbles across this problem, you should try doing all of these solutions ONE BY ONE. They worked for one person or another and it is impossible to have the same problem as someone else (from the looks of it).

I didn't have that, at least not that I could tell, but I loaded the nvidia control panel and turned off PhysX GPU acceleration so we'll see how that goes.

Any thoughts? Yesterday I played all day fine, did a raid in UK, hearthed back to Valgarde, crashed. Today I was doing a quest that put me in water, was swimming down to a sunken boat, crashed. Logged back in, swam up so I wouldn't die (because the game leaves me in the entire time), went to go back down, crashed. Logged in again, repeat, crash. Had to hearth out and come back. It seems like once I crash in water, I will continue to crash seconds after moving in the water until I get out and come back. My leveling has been severely curtailed due to this.
