C'mon people we all know Blizzard staff would never make a mistake. I mean when they put out patches which have been tested...they are always perfect. right?

Q u o t e:

This is my concern as well. The opening line of the Slashdot article is:

The operative word in that sentence is claimed. Everyone is quick to point fingers at us for impropriety, but avoid the reasonable answer of "maybe they were using third-party programs to gain an unfair advantage". It really is a simple answer, yet it seems to be avoided, for the most part.

Law of large numbers: if you have large groups of people claiming they are kicked for using Linux. They were probably kicked due to using Linux.

You may have tested Cedega a while ago (that's the feeling I get from your previous post), Cedega revs out about every 2-3 months. I highly doubt you're testing your warden software against each rev of Cedega.

You should pony up and take the blame for it. You can dodge a lot of communities and spin a lot of mistakes. But it won't work against the OSS community, they are far to used to dealing with it.

A brilliant change from the national sociaist germany poem and it's very true. If you don't stand up for those who are innocent there will be noone to stand up for you when you are innocent.

Tseric, I might remind you (and the rest of the WoW community) to look at the previous Slashdot article which claimed "User banned from World of Warcraft for using WINE & Programmable Keyboard"

That, too, turned out to be false.

Slashdot is about as reliable as The Enquirer, these days.

Linux users are all looking for some shadey angle anyhow...

i mean lets not kid ourselves here...

its like a cop finding someone with an unliscensed firearm, yea.. MAYBE they don't have drugs on em too, but 9 times out of 10, if you search them they're packing a dime bag or something as well!

So a bunch of botters got pinched, and they all happend to be using linux - that just goes with the whole hacker territory if you ask me.

I think there is more to this. Bliz would not just ban paying customers for no reason except playing on Linux with Cedega. They had to be using some other program.

Actually they can. THey are free to be as arbitrary as they like. They could ban everyone on your server and say it's because "We decided we didn't like having a server named Azgalor. And it's thier fault for creating characters on that server." if they wanted. It wouldn't be good business but it wouldn't be anything you could do anything about.

Can they ban about 1/3 of the people on the Azgalor server? It'd probably run better.

After reading some of these topics that have been started, I was feeling sympathy towards those who were banned, because I actually believed them.

and then, someone posted a link to the WoWglider forums, omg, I've never heard of WoWglider and was shocked at it, and then I saw the forums for that site and now I have no sympathy for those liars trying to ger their account back.

People who think they know everything, annoy those of us who do.

Q u o t e:
Tseric, keep in mind that glider was written for windows, I'm not aware of any bot programs that could have been used in linux. Have you guys considered that perhaps they have a back ground process running that may have caused a hit with warden? Or perhaps it's the difference between Gnome and KDE? Or even as simple as certain linux distros got banned an others didnt? All I ask is that you dont ignore the linux users, I'm sure there's more than a few that got unfairly banned.

It's important to keep in mind of course, that they don't have to be in Linux when they cheat. Nor is it a stretch to think they can't just run a bot app emulated either.

That's fine. However, you did read the part where I said we are in contact with folks who develop these OSs, right? You know, the part where we aren't ignoring Linux users?

You are sure that they were unfairly banned? I am sure you have plenty of adequate proof, then. There is an appeal process which will take this proof into account. You will have to accept my apologies if I can not acknowledge your assertion outright.

Q u o t e:
Did anyone else scratch their heads when they read "running windows emulator on linux"? Isn't that like buying a PS2, hacking it to play xbox games and then complaining when 1 or 2 xbox games don't work on it? how about this... BUY F'IN WINDOWS! damn moron.

Or do you get a little chub when you walk into starbucks and gloat about how your queen of the world cause you use linux and your "sticking it to the man" by not buying windows?

man people are stupid...

No, we use linux cause it's free, virus free(for the most part), stable, and compatible with tons of open source(free) software. Honestly aside from wow, I have no use for my windows box. It just takes a certain level of wit to maintain and use a linux box properly, which I'm guessing you don't have.

I've heard a lot of people moaning about "false positives" and Linux but I've yet to see anyone offer up the slightest reasonable explaination about how Linux may cause false positives for Glider checks....

It's called playing off of emotions. This is why most people protesting their innocence will cite some human angle that involves an emotional response.

You know how many times I've heard the story, "My disabled 7-year-old son has to use modifications to allow him to play. I can't believe you would ruin his gaming experience like this" or a variation of such a claim? Many times.

Have I ever seen it to be true? Not yet, but hey, there's a first time for everything.

With that logic MSN messenger is a 3rd party program!
