Since the release of the first Warcraft game, the lore of the Warcraft universe has been evolving and expanding at an incredible rate. Today, Warcraft lore is spread across four games and three expansions as well as a number of novels, a pen-and-paper roleplaying game, and even a manga series. Now you can find all there is to know about Warcraft in one official source of all things Warcraft:

The Warcraft Encyclopedia- http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/encyclopedia/index.xml

The Encyclopedia will contain information about all major races, factions, and characters, and you will also learn interesting new things about the different worlds that make up the Warcraft universe. The first release of the Encyclopedia focuses mostly on the elves of Azeroth and their relation to each other :
  • night elves (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/encyclopedia/508.xml)
  • high elves (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/encyclopedia/429.xml)
  • blood elves (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/encyclopedia/338.xml)

You might also want to take this opportunity to brush up on your Darnassian (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/encyclopedia/361.xml) and Thalassian (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/encyclopedia/576.xml), and if you ever plan to visit the Emerald Dream (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/encyclopedia/394.xml), it would be best if you read up about it in advance.

This collection of Warcraft lore will be updated several times a year with significant volumes of new information, and in time, it will grow to be the ultimate resource for all your Warcraft story and lore needs.

We hope you’ll enjoy the Warcraft Encyclopedia!

Why not publicly endorse and try to monitor the WoW Wiki?

Wouldn't that be easier for Blizzard than try to co-opt the idea?

    wow wiki is better.

Just endorse that and help that along and you'll save yourselves a lot of time and money.

    Q u o t e:

Also, I think the encyclopedia looks much, much nicer than WoW Wiki. Time for the guys over at the Wiki to step up their game, imo. Competition always benefits the consumer!
    =)

You really think this encyclopedia is better? Because I looked all over it, and I couldn't find 1 thing about professions, boss fights, boss loot tables, rep grinds, instance info, etc etc...

WoW Wiki is already set up and extremely functional and expanding it's already wide database with more information all the time.

Blizzard is basically going to be doing nothing but spending months playing catch-up. If Blizzard wants an encyclopedia, they should just put a link up to WoW Wiki and then offer it any additional information they might like the players to see and/or have access to.

Blizzard is just trying to reinvent the wheel while WoW Wiki is playing roller derby in the parking lot.

    Wiki?

Do you also do your high school book reports by researching on wikipedia?

    Q u o t e:
Dude, you're obviously not getting the point of the Encyclopedia. It's not supposed to supplant the Wiki, but instead serve as an official, canonical source of lore.

Heh, first time I caught myself using "dude" and "supplant" in the same post. Go me!

    hehe.

It sounds like a good chunk of the information you are looking for is already in testing in the in-game knowledge base or being added to it. Not everything will be found there since we don't like to reveal every detail but rather let others discover it where we can.

Ah, that was going to be my next question. Will this info be found in the in-game encyclopedia? Would be good reading for some of those intracontinental flights..

I think its a great idea, I made a post before about curious aspects to the new storyline with BC and everything else, and i'm glad Blizzard is still working on it and thinking about it through and through.

Some things will be on the website and some will be in-game. We don't want to overload the in-game knowledge base with things that we can easily add to the website to balance the load.

I'm greatly disappointed with it. It uses the same coding as the main page, therefore it takes long to load on older computers and is just overall sluggish.

And on long pages, Blizzard's logo and copyright statement are overlayed on top of the article text. Bad web site designer. No cookie for you.

"A few high elves have chosen to join the Alliance in recent years, but the Alliance as a whole remains somewhat suspicious of high elves to this day. The high elves' secession from the Alliance during the Second War left bitter memories. Furthermore, the night elves, who became part of the Alliance during the Third War, saw it as their duty to warn their new allies against the high elves. The Highborne's part in bringing about the War of the Ancients figured heavily in the night elves' retelling of high elf history."

    *sigh*

Warcraft III: High Elven Priests and Sorceresses are units in the Alliance race. The whole Reign of Chaos campaign shows humans and elves working together cohesively.

    Goddamn grudge-holding Night Elves.

(Oh, by the way, the Night Elves didn't "become a part of the Alliance during the Third War" any more than the Horde races did. They just teamed up with the Alliance at the Battle of Hyjal. They became an official part of the Alliance completely after the events of The Frozen Throne. This is frustrating retconning.)

I'm glad Blizzard finally has some figures and an official explanation of what happened to the High Elf population after Arthas pwned the Sunwell (only 10% of survivors remained "High Elves" and shunned the Blood Elf majority), although I am disappointed that they are totally downplaying the remaining High Elf population. I know you're afraid of having too many elf races, but wouldn't it be more interesting to have an independent group of Alliance-sympathisizing High Elves? Will the Quel'danil lodge and other High Elf NPCs be kept in the game indefinitely?

I'm sorry, I just find it depressing that the halfway decent High Elves are being screwed over in favor of the oh-so-boring-and-totally-emo Blood Elves.
