So i started thinking one day how fast dose my character run. With a simple Equation it is rather easy to figure out. Distance/Time = Velocity.

First things first i needed a measured area. and being a shaman i could easily get a 40 yd distance. I dropped a totem and backed up until it was out of range of my 40 yd heal then scooted up slowly till it became back in range.
Step 1 - http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg258/wowspeed/WoWScrnShot_012308_113943.jpg

Now with a measured distance out i placed a smoke flare at my feet and one at the totem. (40 yd)
Step 2 - http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg258/wowspeed/WoWScrnShot_012308_112622.jpg

With My ipod stopwatch in hand i hit the auto walk button and started it as i crossed the first flare and stopped it as i crossed the last one(yes i went in a straight line)
Step 3 - http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg258/wowspeed/WoWScrnShot_012308_112736.jpg

Now it took me 5.94 seconds(rounded up to 6) to run with no speed enchants, and 17.16 seconds to walk the same distance ( rounded to 17 respectively) Over a 40 yard distance.

to make it a lot less messy i convented 40 yards to .02 miles (google converter FTW)

RUN-
.02 miles/6 sec = (.02mi/6sec)x10 to get 60 sec (i.e a minute)
.2miles/60sec = (.2 mi/60sec)x60 to get a hour
12miles/hour - with no run speed chants or anything.

WALK-
.02mi/17sec
(.02mi/17sec)x3.5 (gives us 59.5 sec but close enough)
(.07mi/60sec)x60 minuets
4.2 mi/hour - walking speed with out chants.

Now i know i might have made a few errors and feel free to correct them. (the 40 might be measured wrong)

If someones already done this before me more power to ya. did you get even close to the number i got?

you can use this info to calculate mount speed, and i will do that if this post get replied to, see if your mount in game goes as fast as your new sports car in real life.

Interesting! So I guess the girls in the Undercity were right: I really am pretty spry for a dead guy.

Flight path flying mounts go at a max speed of 500%, +400%.

So, if your math is right then...
Running = 100% = 12 mph, 12 * 5 = 60 * 100 = 6000 MPH... and WoW is only roughly the size of Manhattan according to other calculations.... hm.

Ha! That's awesome. The walking speed sounds about right, and perhaps the running speed as well, if we were all marathon runners. = O

Here's a great idea - once you've calculated flying mount speed you can easliy work out the actual size of azeroth and outlands.

Run in a striaght line while looking at the map - speed(distance/time) / time = distance. We can make key :D.

Let me please just say that there is no way that those "40 yards" is actually 40 real-life yards in accordance with the supposed size of the characters... at least in my opinion.

That just seems way too short of a distance to me.

Anyone agree?

EDIT: By the way it looks, your chararcter standing straight would be about 5 yards tall.... o_o

Why would you multiply by 100 at the end. Flying is 5 times normal, so 12 x 5 = 60mph. Seems reasonable.

in your calculations, the multiplier for 100% would be 100.0 when it is actually 1.00

so for your "500%" speed increase, it would be 12 mph * 5.00 equaling 60 mph

however, i believe FP mounts are ~300%

Edit: sticky keys

Agreed. Heck, "melee" range is about 5 yards, right? So technically I can get stabbed by someone 15 feet away? Repeatedly? Damn you Mister Fantastic, I won't give back those five bucks! EVER!

Wrong! With an epic mount and crusader aura up (280% + 20% = 336) I easily pass taxi mounts. I recall I estimated one day that taxi mounts go approximately 300%. Anyone with an epic mount and riding crop should be equal or a bit faster than the taxi.

..... flight paths move 300%. ( as stated by a dev on forums) the arena mount moves 10% faster. so max speed in game is 330%. not 500. so 12x3.3 = roughly 37.2

100% - 12
200% ( epic) 24
280% ( epic flyer) 34ish
330% (epic arena + pally) 37ish... not 6000

to the pally above me . im 99% sure that its a 20% amount. not 20% of 280 just 20%. its addition with poercentages in this situation.

Exactly. the scaled proportions of characters and terrain are skewed to make gameplay easier.

How else do you explain someone being gone "days ago", yet their corpse is only a single three minute run from the NPC looking for him?

A tree drops and no one is around, does it make a sound?

I (shaman) personally can't wait to get Totem of the Crusader as my 51 point talent.
Increases mountspeed by 20% while in range of the totem.

Actually its 280 + 100 * 1.2 = 456

Subtract the 100 for your regular run speed and its 356%, not 336%. but yeah we do fly faster than taxis with Crusader Aura.

Actually, to be more accurate -- if a tree falls in Ashenvale and there is no one around to hear it... does the game play the sound file?

My example was one of the Bloodelf start quests.

Dude, the dead NPC is in visible targetable range of the questgiver.
