Nope, you'll have to stay as Draenei, and any character you make from now on must also be Draenei. If you attempt to make a character of a different race it will be changed to Draenei upon log-in.

We haven't given final word on many of the details on the Deathknight as of yet. We'll give out information on specifics when we are able.

The word going around now is:
Your character doesn't transform into a Death Knight, instead you get the option to make a new character as a Death Knight.
The classes that can be Death Knights have not been chosen as of yet. But they seem to want all races available.
I had the greatest signature in the world, but the server was busy and it didn't save. I don't remember what my sig was, so this is the tribute to the greatest signature in the world.

No final details perhaps, but the last thing we heard was that you created a new character (so being a Draenei 70 would in no way preclude him from rolling a Draenei as another race), and that unless things have changed, current thinking (we've been told of) is that any race can be a Death Knight. Hell, the presentation at Blizzcon specifically showed a Gnome Death Knight!
True, this is all Subject To Change (tm), and further information will be delivered Soon (tm), but until we hear differently, that's what I tell people when they ask, because that's what we've been told.

reading the page detailing the coming package it appears the death knight is a NEW character not a rehash of the same character. Ie your character does not become a death knight. You simply gain the ability to bring a death knight into the game world.
Why a death knight would not work for Arthas... that I do not know. Perhaps we can convert one and hence open a slot to play as one?
What I feel sorry for is the poor saps errr... dedicated players who have created 10 level 70 characters on a server so they MAY need to delete a character to play a death knight.
