Our assessment of the error is that a bug in the graphics driver code is causing memory corruption within the data used by WoW under some circumstances, leading to a crash. Normally graphics drivers don't do that sort of thing, and that's why in this case the error is (as far as we can establish) limited to machines with the X3100 chipset - it's only those systems that suffer from this bug.

Simply put there may not be a way for us to work around this issue effectively, which is why we have researched this in detail in order to give the Apple engineers all the info they might need to zero in on it.

In the meantime, I might suggest adding these lines in the config.wtf, these are purely hypothetical and we're not sure if they will help or not.

SET M2UseShaders "0"
SET pixelshaders "0"

Did anyone else get a Software update on their Macbook today ( 03/05/2008) ??
I know it updates Garagband and a couple other Apps but it did mention a x3100 graphics update for Leopard. I booted into WoW flew to Shadowmoon and pounded the m button about 20 times and so far no crashes. Is anyone else have the same luck as me. If this truly is the fix i would have expected the forums to be flooded with cheer. Or everyone is actually playing. LoL let me know if I am the only one with this luck. I looked at Apple.com and they did not mention anything about an update today, but i swear it...i got one.

I may have jumped the gun on this one....I am sorry for the false alarm, I got out of work and tried a few more times and actually locked up 2 consecutive times to the point were i had to hard boot. No error report just hardcore lock ups that I never had before. Sorry again for the false alarm.

update : after rebooting a couple times from the lock ups, i am back to getting the error reports that we are all so familiar with.

Well I did get an update :(

I am having a slightly different issue. My Macbook is a year old, I do not think it has the x3100 chipset. Since tuesday, every time I play, my Macbook randomly powers down. It has nothing to do with being in the mentioned zones, I crash in Azeroth too, and It only happens when I play WoW.

It sounds like you are having a totally unrelated problem, possibly heat/cooling related. I've noticed that with regular internet surfing use, my internal fans are very quiet, but when i start WoW, they start to really hum. Have the Genius(es) at the Apple Store check your cooling fan.

Thank you, Blizzard for your continued support and help with this problem. I'll try the two lines of code out and post back with the results.

Woooot!

Dudes, I suggest you guys all try the fix Tigerclaw suggested. I added the 2 lines into my config.wtf and the crashings seems to have stopped. I'll do some more testing when i get home later.

Thanks Tigerclaw and the rest of the team! :-D

I have been following this post for last last couple weeks in anticipation of my new Macbook 2.4Ghz arriving. I have no traveled around all of the outland areas yet but I have been lvln my druid back on the classic continents and have not had any issues yet. I added the two lines of text and i'm not sure if it matters but I use Cartographer for my map. Later tonight maybe if i'm feeling crazy ill go try to crash my MB in the outlands to see if the code/cartographer helps or not.

Hi Matthewjp,

You said "most commonly, opening the World Map while in Terokkar Forest...causes the crash." I'm not sure if my situation is the one you are looking for because it is different, but occurs in the zones you've mentioned.

My case is that my WoW crashes every time when I log in to this particular character (only 1, my shadow priest) who is in Terokkar Forest. It crashes before I can even move around in the game so I can't do anything, such as hearth out. My other characters are fine though.

Here is my post with my spec and error message:

Q u o t e:

SET M2UseShaders "0"
SET pixelshaders "0"

I would like to CONFIRM that this (seemingly) fixed my crashes!

Since I installed AlphaMap the only real "trouble spot" I have experienced was around the Bleeding Hollow Ruins in Terokkar. My Macbook would crash every single time I went into the area, and it was a huge pain. I even had to petition a GM to hearth my character to get me out of the trouble spot because I couldn't stay logged on to move my character as a result of the crashes.

After adding these two lines to my WTF, however, I am now able to fly around and move throughout this area without crashing, the first time I have been able to do so on this computer.

Thanks!

I was pretty excited to hear that there is a fi out there, I edited my Confg file with the two line and everything started to work great. Now I am back to the same problem i started with. It will not crash 100 percent of the time but most of the time.
