Hello, after posting on this subject many a time i decided it was time to compile a master list to help future generations of raid tanks. Please help me complete this information by posting information i have missed, revisions that need to be made and any issues regarding links. I am again only one person and i am far from infallible. I hope you all enjoy it.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
This is by no means the end all list, but it names the basics for those looking to gear up for raiding.
[/i]
Stats
Stamina/HP:(12000hp) This is an acceptable start for raiding. It’s easily done and exceeded with proper enchanting and gem placement. More is defiantly better, and appreciated by your healers, but this is a decent start.
Defense:(490def)This amount makes you "unable" to be critically hit by the majority of raid mobs. Some bosses will still critically hit you regardless of your defensive number, but 490 is needed regardless to help avoid damage. Again, more is better but should not be stacked at the loss of other stats such as stamina.
Dodge/Parry/Block:(15%) This is the target minimum percent of all three stats you should attempt to have before entering kara to help avoid damage. Block is usually easily attained and surpassed while dodge may take some intent to reach depending on your gear stats. Parry is the hardest to attain out of the three due to the high +parry to parry% conversion but still relatively easily reached.
Armor:(13000) This is a decent starting amount of armor for kara to help mitigate as much damage as possible. 12000 is acceptable and can be dealt with, especially in an off-tank role, but as per usual more is better. This is arguably the easiest stat to attain and surpass as long as you are wearing all or mostly level 70 pre-kara blues that are meant for tanking such as the bold dungeon set.

Heroic Gear & Heroic Badge Gear:

Heroic instances and heroic badges can be a good way to attain better quality gear or supplement missing pieces of gear or stats for raiding. Heroic instances are difficult to do when under geared so I would suggest gearing up as much as possible before attempting them. This means that you will most likely be unable to attain this gear during your pre-kara gear up. Heroic badges drop from all heroic instance bosses as well as from bosses in Karahzan and Zul’Aman.
Heroic Instance Drops:
[Lion's Heart Girdle](Waist) http://www.wowhead.com/?item=29238
[The Fel Barrier](Shield) http://www.wowhead.com/?item=32082
[Yor's Revenge](Ring) http://www.wowhead.com/?item=31924
[Spaulders of Dementia](Shoulder) http://www.wowhead.com/?item=32073
[Amber Bands of the Aggressor](Wrist) http://www.wowhead.com/?item=29463

[Gauntlets of Dissension](Hands) http://www.wowhead.com/?item=32072
[The Sun Eater](Sword) http://www.wowhead.com/?item=29362
Gear Purchased with heroic Badges:
[Slikk's Cloak of Placation](Cloak, 35 Badges) http://www.wowhead.com/?item=33593
[Necklace of the Juggernaut](Neck, 25 Badges) http://www.wowhead.com/?item=29386
[Amani Mask of Death](Head, 75 Badges) http://www.wowhead.com/?item=33810
[Bonefist Gauntlets](Hands, 60 Badges) http://www.wowhead.com/?item=33517

[Iron-tusk Girdle](Waist, 60 Badges) http://www.wowhead.com/?item=33279
[Unwavering Legguards](Legs, 75 Badges) http://www.wowhead.com/?item=33515

[Azure-Shield of Coldarra](Shield, 33 Badges) http://www.wowhead.com/?item=29266
[Gnomeregan Auto-Blocker 600](Trinket, 41 Badges) http://www.wowhead.com/?item=29387
Gems:
I would not suggest putting expensive gems in a piece of gear unless you believe it will last for a decent amount of time. Remember, you cannot remove gems once they are placed; only replace them, destroying the current gem in the process.
Jewlcrafting:
[Solid Star of Elune](12stam) http://www.wowhead.com/?item=24033
[Solid Azure Moonstone](9stam) http://www.wowhead.com/?item=23118
[Sovereign Nightseye](4str 6stam) http://www.wowhead.com/?item=24054

[Shifting Nightseye](4agi 6stam)http://www.wowhead.com/?item=24055

[Champion's Fire Opal] http://www.wowhead.com/?item=30587
[Defender's Tanzanite] http://www.wowhead.com/?item=30566

Enchants:
Enchants are a great way to supplement gear stats. In traditional tank fashion stamina enchants on just about everything is the norm. Besides stamina, other useful tank enchants include armor, dodge and strength among others.
Reputation & Crafted:
[Glyph of the Defender](Reputation) http://www.wowhead.com/?item=29186

Good guide. This definitely helps my Warrior out.

Minor error: Mark of the Ravenguard is a quest reward, not a drop.

Thanks for this.

Neat guide! Shouldn't there be something like tank points, though?

I personaly found 18 block value more useful in the long run that 18stamina as it also increases shield slam damage. In most trash mob fights with spaming Shield Block I get upwards of 20blocks doubling the 18stmaina. Not kara geard or attuned yet, almsot there. Im basing this off of the few heroics ive done

Just a lowly healer here but no helm of second sight, as it is a really easy quest line to complete? I know I still have yet to replace it on the damage set I have and I have one on my hunter as well that hasn't been replaced in months.

Other than that nice work on putting together yet another list.

The helm of second sight is a a DPS helmet which is why i didnt add it. The quest line its part of is actually very long and tedious. Buying a felsteel helm of ur BS buddy is better and, as far as time spent goes, cheaper.

I will add the block value shield enchant to the list as an option because, after all, this is just a giant list of options. What is good for others might not be good for some.

10 stam armor patches or 2% threat are much better glove slot enchants.

You should make note that some resilience can be used in lieu of defense to attain -5.6% chance to be crit. For example I use S1 shoulders in my tank set, as they offer much more armor and stamina than bold.

PvP gear is acceptable to use in some slots to shore up your tank set. It's not as good as a pure tanking item of comparable quality, but because they are superior in quality to instance blues the gladiator pieces work just fine for a beginner tank.

EDIT: In addition to the glove enchants mentioned in the post above, you missed 12 defense to bracers, which is quite good if you're low on defense and need to pump it up. Should not be used if you do not need the defense to be uncrittable though.

Good discussion, good explanation. You're missing several items, not the least of which are the Netherwing shield, myrmidon headress, windtrader's band, regal protectorate, warchief's mantle, and girdle of lost vindicator.

Good addition of the badge rewards and some heroics stuff, although having pre-kara gear guide that includes heroic drops is problematic cause you need the gear to get to heroics in the first place.

But really, this has been done before:

Nice guide.

Only thing I would correct is the +15 Strength gloves enchant. That's not a tanking enchant. +10 Stam, +2% Threat, or +240 Armor are the options. I would say 240 Armor is best for mitigation. +2% Threat for duh threat. +10 Stam is the cheapest.

Also Deathforge Girdle is a dps piece, though I suppose it would be pretty good stamina with gems.

I would also add...

Warchief's Mantle - not as good as Bold, but much easier to get
Breastplate of the Warbringer - again, easiest to get
Protector's Mark of Redemption - quest, easy to get
Aegis of Sunbird - Botanica
Netherwing Protector's Shield - quest, easy to get

Looks good, very useful list.

One correction though, 15 Strength to gloves is not a suitable tanking enchant. The 10 stamina armor kit, or 15 agility enchant are superior.

edit: Also, Gems with strength should not be used either.
