Q u o t e:
My ping was great with the registry changes before the patch. Since the last patch I get constant lag spikes into the thousands, sometimes 4000+ ping. I get this with or without the registry changes, I've tried both ways. Usually I get these lag spikes when I do any of the following: try to make a stack of items or open a number of mail items or disenchant a few items or try to buy a few items from the same vendor or browse the Auction House. When I try to do the above I will get many seconds of lag where nothing happens on my screen and the progress bar doesn't show up when you are making an item, then all of sudden the item will be created and a flood of text from the trade channel appears on screen. Also people will "jump" from their previous location to their new location after those seconds of lag. Meanwhile the ping goes well into the red - into the thousands.

It happens exactly the same with me. Everytime i will sell, disenchant, make more than 3 cloths my latency goes to 8k - 10k, i already got 17k latency and when this happen i have to wait like more than 4 minutes for latency backs to 500-800. =]

Ah, this worked beutifully. I'm running Vista SP1, and did not need the hotfix for this to be effective.

Worked for me. Did it tonight and halved my ping from ~200 to ~100.

Q u o t e:
THIS POST IS RELEVANT TO WINDOWS XP AND WINDOWS VISTA USERS

For late comers to this thread who are reluctant to scroll through this massive thread I'll quote a few relevant posts:

Now,

Type "regedit" in windows "run.." dialog to bring up registry menu

Then find:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\

There will be multiple NIC interfaces listed in there, find the one you use to connect to the internet, there will be several interfaces listed (they have long names like {7DBA6DCA-FFE8-4002-A28F-4D2B57AE8383}. Click each one, the right one will have lots of settings in it and you will see your machines IP address listed there somewhere. Right-click in the right hand pane and add a new DWORD value, name it TcpAckFrequency, then right click the entry and click Modify and assign a value of 1.

you can change it back to 2 (default) at a later stage if it affects your other TCP application performance. it tells windows how many TCP packets to wait before sending ACK. if the value is 1, windows will send ACK every time it receives a TCP package.

2 - TCPNoDelay
This one is usually pretty simple (see note)

Details: http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserve...3.mspx?mfr=true

You should install the Microsoft Message Queuing Service. To do this go:

START > SETTINGS > CONTROL PANEL

Open up ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS

click ADD/REMOVE WINDOWS COMPONENTS

Scroll down the list that appears, and TICK the entry MESSAGE QUEUING and click NEXT. Message Queuing will now be installed. Once done its probably a good idea to restart. Once thats done then add the registry entry below

Type "regedit" in windows "run.." dialog to bring up registry menu

Then find:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSMQ\Parameters

Right-click in the right hand pane and add a new DWORD value, name it TCPNoDelay, then right click the entry and click Modify and assign a value of 1.

Click Ok and close the registry editor, then reboot your PC.

To get the MSMQ thing to show up in registry in Vista I went to control panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features -> Turn Windows features on or off, then I had to go through and click all the boxes inside the Message Queue Server until they were checked (and not blue-filled).

I'm not sure the message queue service thing is necessary but I did it anyway.

I am re-posting this because Blizzard's nagle solution is ineffective for me. Disabling these registry fixes today saw my latency shoot back up to 300 from the regular 100 ms I was seeing for weeks.
Great summary! /tagged

I have the problem of being poorly routed to certain battlegroups and would ping 300-500 in-game on servers within said battlegroups.

I'm running Vista (64 bit), and I employed the suggestions in this thread and now seem to ping about 140-160 to the same servers.

Well done guys!

Linux does not need any of these tweaks due to a significantly better network stack (Linux is mostly used on servers, remember). You should have at least the same ping in Linux as in Windows (after these fixes are applied to Windows).

I'll Bump this,

I run vista, both 32 and 64. I live in Dallas and play on anetheron and especially since the expansion I have been getting horrible pings in the 300-500ms sometimes. Usually I sit at 180-250, with lag spikes every so often.

I've tried as many of the fixes for Vista as I could get my hands on...with no luck.

I recently was playing around with Linux WINE and WoW. I installed WoW on this older (Ubuntu 8.10) P4 1.8ghz, Geforce 5200, 1gb ram. The computer itself can barely get 10 FPS, but its latency was 60ms!!! How is it my computer, which is far superior in every way, gets 180-250ms on average and this old comp (using WINE to translate WoW for linux) gets 60ms.

Well, I setup the linux router using IPTABLES and SOCAT, and now my vista box gets between 60-80ms. Even with the expansion and running around with 100's of players in the same zone, I never crossed over 78ms.

Whatever the problem is, I believe it is still around. I'd like to have a blue poster to please come and discuss this with us.

Im still curious on this issue

Many class changes. You won't like the ones made to your own class but you'll think the changes made to the 9 other classes are all overpowered.
