I haven't seen it blocked from refresh, unless I had some effect that happened to increase my own +heal when I cast the existing ES. Every time it blocked me, I thought about it and I had a Wrath of Air out or a trinket up, or I had Arcane Int at the time I cast the previous shield.

Yes this needs to be fixed.

I am sick of asking my tank to remove earthshield so I can refresh it.

bump for blue, got this error trying to overwrite an ES with the exact same healing as the current one in kara (2 badges a boss ftw) highly annoying when doing trash and wanting to toss a full 10 stack ES b4 drinking thus saving a couple hundred mana.

Do some more testing.

I cast it on myself and did a little bit of grinding and was unable to refresh it once the number of charges dropped below 10. This is without touching my equipment or using any totems at all. Just killing a few random salamander-things for the daily cooking quest thing on Tuesday (patch) night. And, then again last night while farming up some herbs while waiting for a Heroic group to find a tank, fighting off a mob that patrolled too close to my herb efforts or got me right before I completed mounting up to fly away.

The only buffs I had up either time were my Alchemy Stone and Earth Shield, including NO totems and no equipment swapping.

@whomever asked: I have absolutely no problems with you cutting and pasting anything I've written, especially if you can somehow get someone to listen. You don't have to attribute anything to me. I just want this fixed.

i did a small test and heres the deal,

Base line earth shield (no buffs at all) i can spam no "More powerful spell active" things

but when i drop WOA, i can cover the base line ES, but when i try to cover the WOA buffed ES with another EXACT same buffed WOA ES i get the more powerful spell notice. Makes no sense

There is a bug with a specific script that is preventing players from overwriting both the shaman earth shield and the priest's prayer of mending. We are working to correct this issue.

From what I've noticed, these buffs both now take into account the amount of +healing the applier has, and will not let someone put a lesser earth shield or prayer of mending on a target.

This works fine for Prayer of Mending, and it'd work fine with Earth Shield if you would change it to only apply to an Earth Shield with all 10 ticks.

Q u o t e:
Before everyone feels the need to 'educate' me, I know the change to Earth Shield to prevent me from over-writing a better one on an existing target. Please do not derail this thread with those unnecessary posts.

What I cannot do, as of yesterday, is over-write my OWN Earth Shield on another target, before it's up. This is annoying, because it disables my ability to effectively manage the inherent GCD and high mana cost of ES. For example, on the ZA Bear Bleed tank last night, I was unable to refresh ES right after the switch. So, even though that tank has only 1-2 charges left, and I'm about to enter a bit of a mana-recharge phase, I cannot get a new one up without using a trinket or some other gimmick to temporarily power-up my healing, thus also eliminating that Use: ability for when my Bleed target gets aggro back and I really need that extra juice.

Additionally, if I go down, the other Shaman in the raid is unable to over-write my ES target because I have more healing than he does. So, this problem is cross-toon within the raid as well.

PROPOSED SOLUTION: I would like to ask if Blizzard could adjust the tolerance level of the ES over-write mechanism to give a 5% cushion. Effectively, allow me to put a new one on if my current ES is at least 95% of the strength of the old one.

Thanks!

This was definitely an issue for me. One tick left and couldn't refresh my ES on the MT in Kara yesterday...was inconvenient, but not broken. >.<

Q u o t e:
Prayer of Mending's overwrite has been fixed in a future patch.

We are looking into Earth Shield.

That was taken from the PoM/ES thread on the Bug forum linked here

http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=2969688103&sid=1

If the fix for PoM is already slated for a future patch can you make sure the corresponding ES fix likewise goes live with that? I had the unfortunate experience of being a healing priest in early TBC and watching rogue animantion fixes take precedent over fixing the stacking gem issue (where if I had 4 royal nightseye on my entire gear set, I would get the mp5s bonus of 1 gem, instead of all 4) so you will have to forgive me if I'm a bit cycnical about this process now. If anything, with more charges and a far greater duration of ES, I would think fixing ES should have more priority. (This is not to say it should go unrepaired for priests--I find it equally irritating on my resto shammy and my healing priest!)

The fact that you can't overwrite a more powerful spell is not the issue. Both priests and shaman want to be able to overwrite their spells when it is convenient to do so--not after it has run out or has been clicked off. ES has charges and a time limit, PoM has a time limit. The principle complaints about this new mechanic are the same for both classes.

I had the same problem in kara last night also. We had two resto shamans and I did try to overwrite theirs and could not do so even though I have more healing. That was great although I did it intentionally to see if I could since i could not write over my own. Perhaps he was casting Wrath of air at times I had cast Earth shield. during the run I ended up casting the entire thing on myself and then casting it back on him... it served my purpose of always having 10 charges on the tank but also wasted 1800 mana, if not for a Spriest I would be upset about the new change. Of course this became a burden to keep track of during mob fights and I ended up concentrating on healing, it was a pain during maiden without stepping into the damage to recast my earth shield that just used its last charge. Yes, I could download a mod, (or waste 900 mana recasting on myself) but prefer not to unless its stated it is working as intended.

On a side note: It would be nice to purge the mage's Earth shield that he spell stole!!! I have to cast it on someone else again to "purge" it off. Ssurely this can't be intended. If many classes can steal/purge/arcane/dispell,eat my Earth shield then why can't I purge it also???

The current plan is to have both Earth Shield and Prayer of Mending fixed in the same upcoming patch.

Thanks.

If you get any inkling on when this might be, please let us know. (i.e. if it's too complicated to do as a hotfix and we'll have to wait for 2.4, versus in some "between" patch in the next few weeks.)

Thanks again!

That is a terrible plan... think about it now how many times will these spells be needingly used between now and the patch? A hell of a lot... QQ will only increase. It needs a hotfix.

Blizzard: Our nerfs will blot out the sun!

Us: Then we shall QQ in the shade.

Q u o t e:
For the record, I'm not sure I think their original intention was even a valid concern.

If there are multiple Restoration Shaman in a single party, then this is an organized raid of some sort. Those people need to be communicating with one another over who has which ES target, and communicate a plan of who will cover tank <X> if Resto Shaman <Y> goes down.

Personally, I don't think this feature solved a problem that any intelligent group of people should have been running into in the first place...

I once told a girl I had herpes so I could get home in time to raid since I was going to be the only available tank for the night.

This bug should be fixed well before patch 2.4 releases. Unfortunately, we're not able to correct this issue through the hotfix method.

That's kinda of a long time to fix a bug created in this current patch. u.u

I hope you mean by you're fixing Earth Shield so it's not so easy to dispel next patch or you only dispel 1 charge. >.>
