Same problem. Wow worked after I installed Leopard. I played for a bit, shutdown, and now I turn it on this morning, no luck. Can not validate game version...

More food for thought, I saw in a discussion on macworld.com that if you use the "...Archive and Install option to preserve user accounts, the files inside the Shared user folder (/Previous Systems/Previous System 1/Users/Shared) don’t get moved."

Same issue here. I installed Leopard on Friday and WoW ran fine. Turned the computer off for a day and on Sunday WoW also ran fine. Today I go to log in and get the "Unable to Validate Game Version" error. My Mac was asleep, not shut down, overnight like I do every night. I suppose I've no option but to reinstall, quite a pain though.

I'm reading on the Apple Support forums that the new "case sensitive file system" in Leopard causes this and that's why a full reinstall seems to be working.

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5664102&#5664102

Last post there. No real description but it makes sense at least.

Looks like I'm off to a full reinstall...when I find my disks :(

CS FS is not a new feature in Leopard. It has been available in Tiger and might have been in Panther as well.

OK, I installed Leopard on Saturday, played all day Saturday, Played all day Sunday, played yesterday. I've rebooted the machine a few times in between all of those and haven't had any problems.

I played today and logged off of WoW. I surfed the web a little and saw an article about Leopards firewall, and I went into the system prefs to look at it. I turned it on to "Set access for specific services and applications". And I put in a few applications to the list, including WoW. So I went in to play wow...remember this is only like 2 minutes since I JUST played it, and I get that message of "Unable to Validate Game Version blah blah blah".

So I'm thinking it's my firewall, so I go back to "Allow all incoming connections". I go back to WoW, same thing: "Unable to Validate Game". I log out of my account and back in, same thing.

All I did in the span of 2 minutes was turn my firewall on and off and now I'm getting the "Unable to Validate Game" when it was running fine for 3 days.

EDIT: I did a full restart of the system, thinking it would clear out something and I'm getting that message. I get the message no matter what I type in the password, so it's not even attempting to go out to the internet.

Weird.

This is exactly what I did, verbatim. Except mine just wouldn't connect period once I drove back down to school and got onto their network. That's what prompted me messing with the firewall thinking it was the new OS's security.

So anything you figure out would be incredibly appreciated to avoid installing/patching all over again.

I was able to reproduce one instance of this problem internally. When I put the WoW game executable (application) in the Firewall config dialog where you can "set access for specific services and applications", the OS changes something about the application contents and then the signature check at logon fails because the bits have changed.

MD5 hash of app bundle before visiting Firewall panel:

The OS has added a new file "CodeResources" into the application bundle, and also made some change to the executable itself, causing the checksum to no longer match what the server expects.

The diff of the two logs above showing the new file added and the difference in checksum on the app binary:

My advice until we get this sorted out would be, don't mess with the Leopard firewall and do not put any of our applications on the special treatment list that the firewall panel provides.

Additional info: if you have no backup copy of the WoW executable, you will probably need to reinstall to get it running again. Once you get to that point I would make a backup copy of the WoW application using Duplicate or (dare I say it) Time Machine, so this issue can be resolved quickly should it come up again.

Thanks Tigerclaw...glad I was able to make this bug happen in the short amount of time I played it and used the firewall settings to kind of zero in on where this is happening.

Maybe sticky this? Or sticky a post of known Leopard glitches and bugs in relation to WoW?

Same thing in my case. I hope Blizzard comes up with a patch for this today because spending four hours of my playing time downloading again is not very good service. Not to mention the fact that it does not look good for Blizzard to wait for users to discover this issue and deal with it afterwards.

Perhaps Blizzard should credit out accounts somehow, I am paying for this time I'm spending while the game is clearly not working for a lot of people because Blizzard didn't test their game against Leopard beforehand.

The game was tested against Leopard, however it was not tested in a fashion that would involve re-configuring the firewall or the parental controls, both of which are Leopard features that (we have learned) can alter the contents of the game files in a way that defeats our existing integrity checking mechanisms.

We are working on a more permanent solution so this issue can be eliminaed in future patches.

Same thing happened to me. I enabled the firewall and it hosed my wow installation. I have to admit all the problems with leopard are annoying. I am now having to reinstall the entire game because of the Leopard firewall.

Tigerclaw,

I appreciate the information you posted concerning CodeResources. I've forwarded this specific issue to my Apple SE and am asking him to discuss it internally. It's wonderful that blizz will find a way to work with this file being added to the bundle but what about every other application that does an integrity check? Apple should correct this as I don't expect every developer to worry about this. I hope to find out more from Apple about the firewall in the very near future. I will share one quick comment from said SE:

Q u o t e:
There has been a lot of FUD around this, but it does work as
expected. I think it is a improvement over what we had in Tiger, but
we need to communicate better what is happening. I had not heard
about it modifying applications, but it only allows signed
applications to work when you have the "Block All Incoming
Connections" selected. Try selecting "Set Access for specific
services" and you should see a dialog pop up asking you if you want to
allow connections when game set up listener on the network.
