The GF and I have two lowbie toons we started leveling a while back - mid 40s, mages, horde.

The problem is that the horde side of the server is mostly....dead. There just aren't as many people, less groups for anything....

It's not 'bad', I'm sure some people would prefer it - but we don't like it much.

Is there anyway for us to play on a server with more people (after all, this is a MMORPG) without paying some completely made up fee? I'm sorry but $30 dollars to change a 1 to a 0 in a database somewhere seems awfully silly to me.

Takes a lot more than just changing a 1 to a 0 when transferring a toon. I'm sure if it was that easy, this game would be able to be run on an Atari 2600.

2.) If the game is working for the other 10,999,999 people, the problem is on your end

Yeah, you have to run a stored procedure with FOUR parameters, all of which are being fed by a web form.

That's super hard stuff.

For instance, it might be as complicated as:

EXEC uspTransferCharacter 'SourceServerID', 'SourceCharID', 'DestServerID', 'DestCharName'

Clearly having a web form execute a query (Like posting a forum post, for example) should cost $30 per incident.

Be glad you don't have to pay $30 for every INSERT run by the forums.

//EDIT: Editing requires an UPDATE statement! $60 for this post already! Woo!

Where'd you get your degree in Computer Science?

If you are really interested in what it takes to run a game like the World of Warcraft you can find open source implementations of it and see what approach they took. I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't as robust as the real thing (but there is about zero chance of you or I ever getting to see any of the actual code used on the server). But they work, and they work well.

Granted, I wouldn't ever play on them, and I think doing so is a violation of the TOS and I'm 100% not advocating that.

Here's something to think about....if you can copy your character to the Test Realm for free ..... why does it cost $30 dollars to copy your character to another realm?

Anyway, when I said change a 1 to a 0 - I was thinking of the faction change. But yes, it was an exaggeration - but not MUCH of an exaggeration.

the reason it costs so much is because they want to discourage it, and thats one way to discourage it.

The server change cost has nothing to do with difficulty. It's automated anyway.

It simply discourages people from decimating Auction House Markets, or Griefing other players.

(This is just my opinion. Yours is EQUALLY valid, perhaps moreso, because it's yours.)

If you are looking for groups for instances, check out the new dungeon system that is coming in the next major content patch: http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/underdev/3p3/newdungeonsystem.xml

I'm looking forward to this, even with a populated server. It'll be nice to just go around and get stuff done.

Embrace cross server pug grouping, should be fun.

Way I figure it, these will be desperate people like myself. So they won't care about stupid things like gear score, team speak or other crap no one really needs to play a video game with some like minded people.

I've been suggesting they put this in since I was first in cross server battlegrounds; The next step was just so obvious.

Do you and your GF plan to do anything like raiding at endgame? If so then next patch can only work for so long. Cross server LFG does not work for raids. Finding the right guild is really hard if the options are limited. I originally rolled on BWL PvP because I liked the idea of ganking people. But what I found instead was a server that had a 4:1 horde to ally ratio when I got to 70. Plus I realized that I hated PvP (probably helped by the fact that the ratio was 4:1). Well that was fine for a while because there were guilds that did PvE content. Well there were 2 or 3 and one was chinese or something. I didn't fit in any of them so I either had to join guilds that sucked so bad they wiped on Gruul consistently or transfer. Well after three horrible guilds that disbanded on me I jumped ship. I am currently a senior officer of a guild that is 1# in strict 10 man progression (we don't do 25's at all) and much happier with my new server.

Moral of the story. If you plan on doing raiding and your faction is suffering then find a better server or change factions. If you don't, cross server LFG will be just what you are looking for.
