Friends, something strange is going on in Azeroth, and I'm not talking about all the weirdsmobiles /bowing to their pandas.

It seems that the powers that be are making some rather progressive changes to some of our favorite starting zones. Among these changes we see: a brand new tutorial system, better initial health and mana regeneration, and getting rid of the complexity that is low-level eating and drinking.

Call me disillusioned, but up until now I thought that the new subscribers were few and far between. I thought the Recruit-a-Zhevra program corroborated this gut feeling. Last summer, I rolled a new Night Elf Priest during peak hours, and the starting zones were as empty as a theater during a Pauly Shore film. The few people I did see were practically guilded before they accepted their first quest, had BoA gear on, and put me on /ignore as soon as I asked a question about how their day was going. Sure, my guild recruits a WoW noob from time to time, but it is quite rare. And seldom does he not know about how to quest, how to drink water, or which part of the wand is the "shooty part."

It seems like a lot of preparation for a new caliber of player: the type of player who has never set foot in an RPG, let alone an MMORPG. So where are all these new players coming from? Are they here yet? Are they on their way? Will we have time to tidy up before they get here?

I wonder if Cataclysm is going to bring these players to WoW.

I wonder if Sam Raimi is.

Probably a little of both. I think the huge surge of players WoW saw with the release of BC and then again in WotLK are reasonable indicators that it is likely to happen again with Cataclysm.

Edit: It's also very likely existing players will be creating new character on the new races and even the old ones to see the changes to the lands they leveled through before.

I need to see more noobs, I always like it when there's them lower levels who inspect me, or look at my gear, and get all crazy in the pants.

I also feel useful when I help them with their classes and stuff, makes me all warm and fuzzy inside when I teach a noob how to squish things properly.

My warrior was farming the mats for his epic roflcopter mount, flying around Hellfire on his blue proto drake. I landed in Thrallmar to melt some ore and about 5 true noobs sent me whispers telling me how sick my mount looked. I loves me some noobs.

Yay, finally an appropriate place to post the "Bear and the Fox" story...

The story of the bear and the fox.

Bear was returning home, but still far and had been travelling a long time. Bear came to a river and happened upon Fox, trying to cross. "I am too small and weak to cross, please help me" Fox said. Not knowing how to help, Bear said "I cannot help you Fox. I do not know how to get you across" "Let me ride on your back, for you are large and strong, and together we can cross the river" Fox said.

Bear, proud from Fox's compliment agreed, and carried Fox across the river safely.

On the other side, Fox said to Bear "Thank you Bear, but I am weak because my paw is hurt, and I will surely die without help" Bear's head shook as Bear replied "I cannot help you Fox. I do not know how to heal your paw" "Go to the rocks near the waterfall and gather the moss. It will wrap my paw and I will heal" Fox said

Bear, noticing the particular moss, gathered it and returned to Fox.

As Fox wrapped the paw, Fox said to Bear "Thank you Bear, but I can still not gather food, and I will surely die without help" Bear looked down at the river, and saw no fish "I cannot help you Fox. I do not know how to find food here" "Find the trees with red fruit and no thorns for they are safe. Reach up, gather them, and bring them here" Fox said.

Bear heeded Fox and soon returned carrying a pile of fruit, devouring the rest as Fox ate but one.

"Thank you Bear, your generosity is your reward" Fox said. Confused, Bear simply nodded, deciding Fox to be without any reward to give, but not needing such things and eager to return home, Bear quickly fell asleep.

Bear awoke the next morning to find Fox gone, and resumed the journey home. Bear soon had a family,
carrying Bear's own children safely across rivers, using the moss to mend their wounds, and supplying them with food from the trees, just as Fox had taught Bear.

I had someone /say to me all excited because my pally "looked so cool". At first I thought he was being a sarcastic arse but no he actually thought my blues looked good. >.O

'Course then I told him they were blues and he lol'ed. -.- So even noobs know purple > blue.

Yeah, I just started playing a month or so ago, and this was my first MMORPG. They make it pretty straightforward for you, although there are still a few things that are not intuitive- like why you should look for gear that has a green title instead of a white or gray title.

I recently discovered autorun. Yay!

More that foxes are tricky... or that the role of student and teacher... or helper and helpee... are not clear cut at all.

Oh, hey, grats on MVP, Snowfox! I don't know if you remember me, I've been on a bit of hiatus, but good see you got MVP. I posted in favor of that many times, though you downplayed (modestly) the compliment at the time.

See, when I think student and teacher all that comes to mind is my Spanish teacher from senior year in Highschool.

Good lord she was a purty thing.

Oh, and it was quite a good philosophic story.

If I wouldn't have had a friend get me into the game and help me along until I made new in-game friends, I probably wouldn't have played long.

I have gotten a couple of other people to try the game, but after 10 days of being scorned, ridiculed, laughed at and cursed every time they asked a question or did something wrong, they decided it wasn't worth it.
