Just putting the question out there. In TBC there was a tank shortage. Blizzard adds death knights in WotLK, adding another melee/tank hybrid like warriors. That's three tank classes now up to four, and and the addition of dual specs so people can spec for tanking while still having the dps spec they want for soloing and pvp.

So why is there still a shortage of tanks?

I'd say it's cos it's a bit more complicated than dps & all the baddies that rolled 'main' dk's just lack the intellect to tank proper in the first place?

there isn't one per se...it will vary from server to server. On mine, we're okay for tanks...but not great. In my horde server, we have more tanks than we know what to do with.

Funny that a druid without a tank spec is complaining about no tanks.

You don't want all those dps only dk's tanking. Trust me.

Because you have to level as DPS, so most players dont keep a tank spec on the off chance they will do an instance.

cuz its easier to dps and ppl hassel and talk so much crap about tanks....less and less ppl wanna roll one....i got a 80 druid tank and id rather play my mage or rogue less frustration with stupid ppl

I'm leveling a prot paladin, and this character has been balance/resto since forever.

On my server, there is no tank shortage. There is an absolute healer shortage.

Here's why you won't see many tanks even with the addition of a new tanking class:

-Elitists: People are demanding over 28,000 HP on a tank for HEROICS, something that should only require about 20-22k HP.

-Stigma about DKs: Most people don't like DKs and view them negatively, and that has an impact on the players. Some people won't let DKs tank for them, ever.

-Lazy People: Players are lazy; they'd rather do something fun like DPS than babysit while being a tank. Not only that, but to get into any serious tanking roles, you need to gear up first, where as DPS and to a lesser extent, healers, can get by with less quality gear.

There is no tank shortage, there is only a shortage of tanks willing to pug because pugs suck.

"Hey, guys, gimme a sec to grab them"

The Moonkin, Mage and Retladin go AoE wild and 2 of them die

"WTF! YOU SUCK!!!!"

Shortly after the introduction of Death Knight, there was actually a massive boon in tanks because of how many Death Knight tanks there were. However, since their introduction, Death Knights have been nerfed almost (if not in all) every patch, in both tanking and DPS.

Because of all these nerfs, many people stopped tanking on their Death Knights because, of the four tanking classes since the introduction of DKs (Warriors, Paladins, Druids, and Death Knights) - they were now the weakest and least desirable tank.

Basically, Blizzard introduced Death Knights partially as an answer to the tank shortage. They then proceeded to nerf their tanking ability until the majority of Death Knight tanks quit...ironically enough putting WoW back where it was pre-WotLK in the tank supply situation.

I myself had a Death Knight tank. Rather well geared, 33.5K Health unbuffed. But because of all the nerfs, I no longer have a desire to tank on him. I banked the tank set and am now dual specced into two different DPS specs - DW Frost for melee-heavy raids, and 2H Unholy for caster-heavy raids.

Because tanking is more than a rotation. You actually have to be somewhat aware of your party's stats, and not be sleeping while you fight.

"don't stand in the fire" "don't stand in whirlwind" "stand here" "don't pull aggro" "run back like everyone else"

I don't want to tank your pug when I can take people in my guild and be done in half the time it would take a pug.

It's a simple answer. The player base sucks.

There's a tank shortage because players believe a tank needs 35k+ HP to do a heroic run.

My prot pally had 24k HP unbuffed in a raid for Naxx10 as the OT. A rogue in the raid questioned why I was a tank with low HP.

Because it's Naxx10 and it's not an emblem run or an Undying run.

Sadly the raid fell apart because no one understood how to tank the back group of the 4 horseman. But we got Spider Quarter down.

bro i need a dps spec for raiding and a dps spec for pvp

If there is a shortage is it more than likely due to the fact that people on your server abuse their tanks, and as such people get tired of the abuse and give up tanking.

Just and FYI:

1)People don't tank so that you can unload your entire arsenal of cd's in the first 3 seconds of a fight before they have established agro.

2)People don't tank so that you can brag about your damage meters at the expense of the group.

3) People don't tank to keep the DPS up so they can refer back to number 2.

4) People don't tank so you can #!#%* about their gear and hitpoints.

5) People don't tank so you can shave 5 mins off a run, so you can go do your homework you have been neglecting, meanwhile #!#%*ing about how long it's taking the whole run.

6) People don't tank instances where they need nothing so you can critique them on their tanking prowess

7) People don't tank so that you can stand in fire and poison waiting to move the mob out of said areas forcing you to finally move out of it as well.


I could more than likely go on, but if you haven't already figured out what I have written already then chances are I have already wasted too much time, and you probably aren't worth tanking for. Nuff said.
