Q u o t e:
"Preparations for a fishing derby in Northrend are well underway by the Kalu’ak. Up for grabs - a new heirloom ring!"

Am I the only one who thinks this is rather moronic? Several people are likely to do this with the ease of fishing, plus lucrative dailies (if you're a little lucky) which probably has more fishers than ever in the game. The chances that any of them are alt-o-holics or even will ever use the ring isn't even guaranteed. Most will do it just for the achievement or just to see their name yelled when they win. It's a pure luckfest to even get, what it looks like will be the only boa ring in existence, as it's just the first person to catch a shark. Please please please choose a different prize. Heirloom items should be readily available for people like myself who want to chain level alts. I'm fine with the number of badges and seals I've spent to buy nearly every heirloom item in the game. Locking people like myself out of them for something like this seems really dumb.

just be happy its boa so you/they only have to do it once...

It's better to be pissed off than to be pissed on.

Point of a PTR is to give feedback. Since they have only given us little tidbits to go on, I'm giving worst case scenario feedback so as to make sure it doesn't go live as such. Prove that my assumptions are wrong and I'll shut up. =)

Hey guys, the chances of us succeeding against this boss or ever will aren't even guaranteed. Lets not do it.

The chances of me being able to start my car so I can go to work aren't even guaranteed. Better not even try.

The chances of this chair holding up while I sit down aren't even guaranteed. Guess I'll just stand.

Moronic.

Anyway, I like this new addition. It encourages me to finally level my warlock's fishing, and then I can stop bugging my friends for cooking mats. :)

To the people who presume the reason I'm crying about it is because I don't want to level fishing...I have max fishing on two toons and 375+ on two others. I'm not QQ'ing at all about the fact I have to fish. If it was a random drop in the world, I'd be more than happy. The issue I have is the idea that this is likely going to be the prize for winning (not for just turning in a shark late). And I think the idea that an heirloom item being linked to the one person who's lucky enough to get a shark first is dumb. That's fine if you want to assume I'm QQ'ing about the item being too hard to get. I've probably put way more effort in to getting stuff in this game than most people, including epic mounts pre-bc on multiple toons back when 1k gold was hard to come across. But that's fine, all you can do is flame and assume people want stuff for free. I hope you want the ring and never get it because you're not the lucky one person a week and then see how it feels.

Just bumping this to say I was right.

The ring is NOT fishing based and is ONLY for the winner:
Dread Pirate Ring
Binds on Account
Unique-Equipped
Finger
+34 Stamina
Requires level 1 to 80 (80)
Equip: Improves critical strike rating by 53.
Equip: Improves hit rating by 29.
Equip: Experience gained from killing monsters and completing quests increased by 5%.

Grats on an xp increasing ring being available to at most 52 people a year per server. That's just stupid. And it's gonna be fun thinking about the people who get lucky enough to win on multiple toons or alts all because they were simply LUCKY enough to get the shark first. I have no issue fishing, but an xp increasing ring for the luckiest person once a week is stupid.

You're missing the point entirely. Do you even read my posts? I have it leveled on four toons. The point is the ring will ONLY GO TO THE WINNER. An heirloom item with xp increase...goes to a single person PER WEEK PER SERVER because they got lucky and got the shark first. Period.

You're not a very bright one, eh? Read post #23 where the OP states the following:

Like, really, if you're going to troll people, you should at least learn to read before doing so. Sad little person. Also, granting the luckiest person a week help in leveling is dumb, heirlooms shouldn't be rewards for fishing. Everyone levels, not just fishers. Why does that one person get more xp while leveling, they didn't earn it.

Red Text for spelling, yay!

They did earn it, they completed a fishing quest that only 52 people a year per server can complete.

I'd say that earning it.

Blizzard has just released the details of the Kalu'ak Fishing Derby that's coming with patch 3.3. The full announcement after the break.

Some of the major points of the announcement:

* The derby happens at 8:00pm Server Time every Wednesday.
* You have to be the first person to catch the Blacktip Shark and turn it in to win the Derby.
* The quest giver, Elder Clearwater, is located in Dalaran.
* Two item rewards (detailed after the break). One is a BoA +5% XP ring, and one is a BoP pair of boots that teleport you to Booty Bay.
* Winning the Derby increases Kalu'ak rep by 5000.

The full details after the break.

I read that on the internet so it must be true.

Until you can solo it naked, don't complain that it's too easy.

Personally, I like the luck based factor.

And you're looking at this the wrong way, sure you're computer may have 10k people, but not everyone is going to have max fishing, not everyone is going to be on a Wednesday afternoon. Not everyone is going to bother with it. Plus, I see it like the STV tourny, for the first few months it's released a ton of people are going to play, but it'll die down eventually.

Luck is always going to be in this game. It took me 120 something runs on my druid to get the Baron's mount, it took my rogue about 30 something stealth runs of BRD back in vanilla for the barman's shanker.

Sure, RNG may suck at times, but it shows people who are really dedicated to getting what they want.

You could say why do heroic farmers get a chance to level faster than fishers?

You're right. Far fewer people will be leveling with a 25% experience boost as compared to those leveling with a 20% experience boost with heirloom items. Given all of the scaling heirloom items in the game and the ways in which we've eased the leveling experience, we're okay with that.

It shouldn't be expected that every heirloom item with increased experience will be made readily available to every 80 player. This is a special ring for a few select lucky winners a month. Good luck!

This is the problem though. It's in no way earning it imo. To the person above who said, you leveled fishing and you beat 52 other people, that's actually wrong, note the blue post: "Don't forget, in patch 3.3.0 you never catch trash from fishing pools, regardless of skill." Someone who had NEVER fished a day in their life in wow can come get it on their first cast and screw people who HAVE put in effort. That's NOT earning it.

To the person who compared it to baron's mount, I'd love if it was anyone who caught the shark, but the blue posts made it very clear it's winner only. So it's not something you can just farm. And as I mentioned above, theoretically, the same person could win every week and block the other people on the server from getting it. Anyone who thinks a single rng cast of fishing has earned this ring is insane and it's obvious you just don't care about leveling (which is fine) but if it was something you actually wanted, I'm sure you'd be kind of po'd too that it's just one randomly lucky person a week.

Personally, I think they should schedule this new fishing tournament at the same time as the one in STV so people can't possibly do both in the same week.

This makes perfect sense. If they wanted to give heirlooms to everyone, without any effort, they might as well just make an auto-80 button. Heirlooms are meant to be a treat, not a staple.

Long live the gnomish empire!
