Yes, it's a big deal.

There were solutions for guild storage, having too many pets/mounts, swapping out gear sets, having more than one spec, etc; all were problems that existed in the past, had creative solutions to, that Blizzard responded to and provided players with a specifically designed in-game solution.

Just because you can get around a problem does not mean there should not be an easier solution.

I'll most likely be getting a second account for Cataclysm to keep all my alts on one server. With levelling revamped, new races and new R/C combos I foresee veteran altoholics like myself running into trouble with the character limit. We like having our own little army of alts at our beck and call :)

I have suggested in the past a paid service to open up additional character slots on a specified realm. Those who haven't reached the character limit won't use it (which is the majority of the playerbase), but those who have and want additional characters will, and be grateful it is there.

Oh, I'm certainly not saying it wouldn't be awesome! I'm an alt-aholic and have loads of them, although I'm also inclined to roll on whatever server I've heard is decent and will let me have the name I want too. I'm baffled by people who only have one or two toons, I really am.

I'm just balking at those who make it sound make or break for Cata! I mean, even just adding another two slots won't make a dent in my alts. Being able to buy additional slots is a very nice idea, imo. I'm sure it'll happen eventually. I just don't see it as a huge ordeal I guess. Maybe cause I solo a lot. /shrug

On the third day of Cata, my Blizzard gave to me... three top hats, two new Druid toons and a Goblin Lock obsessed with mon-ey.

The Goblin mafia disapproves of this thread. No discounts for you.

This was brought up at BlizzCon and while the expansion is still a ways out, we don't currently expect to add an additional character slot for each realm.

An extra slot is meh... When will we be able to re-order our characters on the log in screen?

All for one, and one for Thrall!

Could you provide any form of reason why??? Blizz has been pretty firm on not providing a new slot, but they've also failed (for some reason I cant understand) to explain their brilliant reason for not adding one more slot?? Because without some kind of explanation... you just look like stubborn foolish bastards. Sorry, just telling the truth.

Warriors think Pallys are OP, Pallys think Locks are OP, Locks think Rogues are OP, and Rogues think.... lets face it no one cares what those *@%%#@%s think.

QFT.

I've got 2 80s, a 77, a 74, a 72, a 55, a 54, a 45, and a 25. All are separate classes. The only slot i have left is for a rogue (which will be my worgen). I'm gonna wind up race-changing my warrior (my oldest character) from human to worgen, and my human mage into a dwarf mage when the new R/C combos come out. That right there is 50 bucks. 25 per.

I'm sick and tired of only having 10 slots per server. It's not that hard to give us an 11th slot for another character. And if they're worried about balance, then keep the 50 character max.

Would also be a fine solution. Even if it were a bit more a month, I'd pay for more character slots. Kind of shocked with every other possible pay service for characters under the sun existing now, something like this hasn't come up yet. Maybe Cata is it in terms of WoW and they don't want to waste any more time re-doing old code, who knows?

They don't want to add new slots because there's an arbitrary limit.

News at 10, y'all: Arbitrary limits are arbitrary.

10 per server, 50 total. This helps Blizz cut down on memory usage. If the arbitrary limit was 13 per server and 52 total, there would be people saying "I have 13 level 80s now, I need 1 more slot for cataclysm!"

You hit the arbitrary limit. You knew that eventually, there would be new races or a new hero class or some new thing coming along that might prompt you to roll a new toon. You created 10 toons and maxed them with that knowledge and went ahead with it. No one forced you to.

Server-transfer a toon or do a race-change or delete one and re-roll. Do not expect Blizz to uncap the per-server toon limit or increase their arbitrary limit. It isn't a question of how easy it would be to do, it's a question of "what good reason is there for doing this?" And there is no good reason. As soon as they raised it, people would just ask them to raise it more.

Saying a rule should remain in effect specifically because it is arbitrary is the exact opposite of a logical argument.

While I agree, this argument doesn't have to be logical, I have a few alts as well, my roommate has a full roster but he's gonna lose a couple he doesn't play to get a Goblin and a Worgen in there. I understand the attachment to your characters but the limit has been there since launch.

Perhaps post on the Suggestions forums, if you get enough support who knows?

It's harder than just saying yes or no, that's for sure, and playing on another realm to try something out and see if it's something you want to actually invest a serious amount of time into is still an option.

Well, the character list UI is designed for 10 characters. They already overhauled it to make room for the new races, so I can see why they don't want to touch it right now.

Still, I'm a chronic re-roller. I delete toons all the time. But over the years it's become harder and harder to separate from the ones I've put more time into.

Many of the new race/class combos sound appealing. I have a feeling I'm going to try at least 5 or 6 new toons with Cataclysm. But I'll be deleting old toons to make room. I find it unappealing to play any toons on servers away from my main and my trove of BoA items.

Please reconsider removing the per realm limit altogether. I'm fine with the account level limit at 50; although, I have hit that a couple times too.

As far as the UI goes, maybe just add the ability to scroll the list of characters? It would make this altaholic very happy.

BoA's are awesome to a point where I do not wish to play without them anymore, so while I'd love to take my altaholicness to alliance (since I really enjoy building up characters) unless you can get BoA's to go cross server/faction I'll never get to reroll those races. I know part of that is my fault for how I wish to play the game, but at the moment heirloom gear is false advertising =P

I won't speculate as to how hard it is, but I would definitely appreciate more character slots per server.

Just consider it blizzards way of forcing you to pay for a server transfer of your least played character to a new server in order to make room for your worgen/goblin

Hell by the time the last expansion ships you can expect to be paying to transfer characters back and forth from realms weekly to make use of their tradeskills because blizzard will still refuse to allow a character to have more than 2

This, and... QQ people!

I have an 80 Paladin, Prot/Ret, an 80 Mage Arcane/Fire, an 80 Druid Resto/Feral, and I'm working on an 80 Rogue.

Seriously, I got home yesterday and decided to play WoW. I played WoW for oh, quite a few hours and never once logged off of my Paladin. Some days I will want to play my Mage, and never leave him.

The net result of having 50 toons is quite simply that you have about 49 really crappy ones and a couple of good ones. I'm lucky enough that all three of my toons are good at alternating the Raid content since they fill all three roles, but my Rogue may get stuck only doing PvP.

For those wanting another slot just to have another slot... look at your toons. Are all 10 of them level 80? Are all 10 of them in BiS gear? Do you have one of each profession and those professions completely maxed out? Out of 10 players on the same account, is your account completely self-sufficient in the sense that you only use Trade and the AH to Sell but never to buy? If so, then maybe you deserve an 11th slot. If not, and you have 4 level 20 Alts, just delete one and get on with your life.

I wouldn't mind one of each Class, but really you have to prioritize. There is no sense in leveling my Rogue when my main (at least) can get much better gear, and no use making a brand new toon for sure! Look at the people who made DKs on day one. What did they have to do? They had to sacrifice leveling their mains that they have used for years in order to get their DKs up to 80, then let their old mains fall in behind later. In no way did they cry about needing an 11th spot.

As for the numbers, I'm not sure how much it matters, but player account slots in exponents of 10 fit into a binary/base 10 number system (computers use a bit of both I'd say) than an exponent of 11.

I still want to be able to re-order my existing characters on the log in page.

All for one, and one for Thrall!

Actually neither of us works for Blizzard (altho I do work in IT and one of my best friends has to work with databases daily) so we have no way of knowing what kind of technical requirements there are to adding extra character slots. You also have to consider the swelling of their databases from suddenly allowing an extra character. extra character times # of servers allowed per player times # of players. The number who actually use that extra slot will be far lower than the max possible, but you don't design your loads based purely around expectations. You have to be able to handle the possible maximum as well.

Don't get me wrong. I would love more slots. I just don't see it happening, altho I wouldn't be surprised if they are working on it as a possibility and make it a pay option. DDO has that, but you can only do 2 characters per server before you buy anything from the online store. After you buy anything from them you get 4 per server. They have significantly fewer servers tho.

I actively roll-play, and every one of my characters has had a lot of time and thought invested into them, and unique character interactions associated with them, even if they aren't all max level. Deleting them would be like having written a 100 page novel, then deleting it without saving. IE, a lot more time wasted than it takes the average hardcore player to level a character to 80, not to mention the loss of emotional investment. And I'd like to have more characters on my home RP server without having to start a second account.

But I'm honestly not even sure why I'm bothering to say this, since I doubt the 1% of Blizzard's player base that considers themselves Heavy Roleplayers will change their mind on a business decision.

one easy solution would have been to add "heroic" specific slots when Wrath launched, instead it took up the existing slots, this could have alleviated a lot of the issues, added to the screen, still counted toward the 50 account limit but been on a separate "table" on the server's character limit. then it would have been easy to expand, especially with the server limit on DK's and possible future Heroic classes.

Why would they?

A second account is 15$/month more in their pocket!

Never mind that, for example, 100$ will get you a 1.5 TB hard drive today when it would have gotten you 160 GB in 2004.

The fact that this is, as everyone is putting it, so easy to do, is probably exactly why it isn't high on their priority list. Just remain quiet and maybe they'll throw you a bone after the dust settles.

While we're making assumptions, I'm going to assume there are clearly more important things to be attentive of than indulging the desires of altaholics.

wow kinda elitest attitude there bud, there are a lot of reason why people have a bunch of different toons that for one reason or another they dont or wont level to 80 and get BiS gear or get their proffs maxed. most are past 20 or if under probably 19 twinks
