Maintenance. Every tuesday you have to fly them back to Ebon Hold so they can upgrade the nuts and bolts holding all the bones together.

Isn't it a situation where there was a difference between the mount speeds, that is no longer present? Or am I mistaken?

Or how about some nifty colored glow from within the ribcage to make them atleast look like they are sustained by magic like all the skeletal dragons.

Oh yeah we Also need more skeletal dragon mounts for achievements/drops and even as high priced vender items .. because you know pvpers should not get a 1 of a kind mount model.

I look at it like this:

The regular flyer is a necessity to get around in Outland/Northrend. The speed is not as relevant as the fact that you can get to places that are not accessible by any other (legal) means. I believe this is the reason behind lowering the cost in the most recent major patch. It was necessary to proceed in the game at endgame.

The epic flier in comparison is a luxury. It achieves the same goal as the regular flier but does it faster - that is the only difference. It can go to the same places as a regular flier. The speed is the luxury and is taxed/priced as such. That being said, thanks for the rep discount - no complaints from me here, but I digress. For those willing to pay the tax, it is perfectly fine. If not, the regular flier does its job well.

TL:DR - The regular flier is a Toyota. The epic flier is a Ferrari. You pay more for the latter even though they will both get you where you need to go.
