I understand to "necro" a thread is to resurrect an old thread with a new post.

Parliamentary Iinquiry: What is the expiration date for a thread such that posting to it constitutes an act of "necro"? Does a rule of thumb exist? I recently saw a thread approximately 1 month old closed as a "necro" and am seeking clarification.

Thank you.

A thread is usually necrod when it has completely dropped off the radar, usually a month or more of no posting.

I think you can get banned for it if you do it just to be an ass.

For me, anything older than 6 months is a necro.

A necro thread is bumping a thread that had previously fallen to a point where it wouldn't likely be seen again.

I don't know about the banning, but a month is probably a good rough estimate. It's a bit subjective.

Basically, if people have stopped posting in or monitoring the thread, and it's fallen very far back in the page count, it's probably dead.

That said, there are certain rare occasions where the necro can be useful.... if I find a bug or issue in-game that's been reported before, I'll sometimes necro the old bug thread because it's the same topic and it has once again become relevant. Still, even if you're doing that you should be careful to make sure it's the exact same issue, not one that's simply similar.

If a thread has been around long enough to start getting union benefits, it's probably a necro...

Yeah, I'm not completely sure about the ban, but I guess if a CM doesn't like you posting "LOLNECRO" in the 2 year old thread, you're gonna get a temp-ban for trolling.

There's a couple of questions you can ask yourself when you consider posting in an older thread:

1) Is this topic still relevant today as it was then?

2) Would the person I am responding to still be around to discuss this inquire with?

3) Am I adding anything constructive to this discussion?

If any of these are "no", then it's probably not a good idea to bump the thread.

4) If I am the OP, did my original query get answered?

If this one is "no", then it may be a good idea to bump it (more relevant for the CS Forum or Tech Support Forum than General Forum).

I'd say if no one has posted for a week, that's old enough to make a new thread rather than "necro".

A day is fine in my opinion. Two or three even, if recent events have conspired to cause the pertinent information of the topic to change. But a week old thread is long dead for the general forums. On realm forums, that's not too bad though.

It's all about where you are on the forums.

I believe that Blizz considers any thread that is bumped after a month of zero posts is considered a necro. However, most of the time you will see someone bump a thread from 2 years ago that has no purpose being bumped.

Either way, bumping your own thread multiple times to keep it on the main page or necroing is against the forum usage policies.

Yup, I'm probably that person who reported your name for being against the naming policy on an RP realm.

Won't this lead to even more forum thread bloat?

General moves pretty quick.

If the thread hasn't had a reply in a couple of days, start a new conversation. If it's a blue-answered thread, probably anything over a week is a little on the stale side.

I think a lot of the time a thread gets necro'd from someone using google and getting a search result to a forum post and they don't realize it's as old as it is.

Then again, there's certainly the "lol I'm necroing lololol" posts too, but you can usually tell when those are.

This is pretty much the best description. Usually it's a thread that hasn't been active in at least a month, but that's not a hard-and-fast rule. If it's a topic that's been inactive for a number of days/weeks and is no longer relevant, or there is a more recent thread discussing the same topic, bumping that original thread would be considered resurrecting old threads.

The severity of the forum penalty typically corresponds with the length of time that has passed since the last response before the bump, coupled with the relevance of thread (i.e. a two-year old thread talking about how long a run back to Prince Malchezaar was being bumped would result in a hefty penalty).

Any time we encounter an old thread that's been resurrected, we gauge the intent behind the bump of the thread and take the appropriate action based on that assessment.

Prettiest mess you've ever seen...
