Again, if you are doing this, you really need to quit WoW.

I was going to post on this independently, but I couldn't resist the opportunity when I saw this post.

RNG is not work. RNG with limited chances over finite time is not fun. Rather, for me this toothpick and the sinister squashling achievements are stressful since I can't enact stategic changes to achieve them.

"Work at" as quoted by a CM, really isn't applicable here. "Work at" is valid in context of Loremaster, Glory of the Hero", etc. For these achievements one can make little progress at a time on and one's ability to accomplish them is not RNG over a finite time.

In contrast, I consider neither killing the hallowed horseman nor trick or treating on the hour every hour would work at any level. These achievements and rewards players who can log in every hour at work for 5 minutes ( or who don't work) and click the innkeeper.

What I'm saying is if you are considering these achievements, you're catering to lucky underachievers.

As much as giving out freebies is your definition of fun, we don't think everybody should get everything just for logging in. We feel the toothpicks aren't that hard to get and while there could be some people with bad luck here and there, anybody I know who consistently worked at this event got the one they needed for the achievement.

So if a player (me) works for a year to get A Long Strange Journey and is unlucky with a drop it's ok because people don't need to get everything they spend months working toward?

I have probably gotten about 20 trick or treat bags since the event started and haven't seen 1 tooth pick. I'm not panicking yet still have a long way to go but the last two items I need are drops. I'm not asking for freebies but if I put the time in make the drop rate such that I will get the reward.

Toothpicks did seem rare to me for awhile. I played the holloween event every time since the game came out (day one character) and i never got a toothpick. Last night i got 2 in a row.

Same with the squishling/hat...never got either ever. Last night my RNG finally showed mercy on me...in 5 kills got 2 squishlings and 3 helms...and finished "Long, Strange Trip" :)

"Give me your mana", said the warlock to the healer.

Toothpick was the last achievement I got for my Hallows End meta last year. True story.

Likewise!

In a game of freestyle footbag, the players stand in a circle. If the footbag is a hydrogen ion, which person is an acid? if the footbag is passed to another person, which person is the acid?

Getting this (and the Valentine's Day) RNG achievements are not "work". They are luck. Getting Firefighter is "work", not luck.

The reason people are complaining about the RNG achievements is because there's nothing they can do to make their luck better. That is frustrating, and every day longer that people don't get lucky, they get more frustrated. That is not fun gameplay. That is not challenging gameplay. That is not (IMO) well-designed gameplay.

It's only 4 days into the holiday event, but I have neither the pet or the achieve helm drop. True, there's like 10 days left, but in approx 25 kills of HH, I have seen one pet drop (didn't win the roll) and one cloth helm drop) didn't win the roll - and it was after your maintenance fix so it can't be traded. Every time I run that stupid encounter and see just crap rings drop, I get more frustrated. Because there's nothing I can do except hope to get lucky.

I Trick or Treat when I can (between 3 and 5 times a day during the week - I have a job and I have to sleep), and so far I have one alt that got the pet, and another alt that got the helm. That's 8 characters ToT (though they didn't on day one - they're alts). I run about 40% tricked (not hard numbers, but a cycle through my 8 chars leaves 3 or 4 tricked every time).

Each day (and ToT) that passes, it gets more frustrating. It wouldn't be frustrating if you could ToT every day all year, but you can't, and it wouldn't make sense, anyway. I don't know if you at Blizzard intended your holidays to be frustrating, but they are. All because of the poor RNG design of a few of the "achievements".

Luck equals neither fun nor challenging. Needing to be lucky, and having a limited amount of time (and tries) to do so just creates more frustration and anger the longer you are not lucky.

I'm also having toothpick issues. Maybe I'll dress my daughters up and we can go trick or treating every day until Haloween is over. Some people don't have time to trick or treat every hour on the hour to get this achievement. The RNG part of this holiday achievement is very frustrating. Last night my main character was tricked four times in a row... I spent about two hours flying around Azeroth to visit candy buckets...now that's an achievement. Rolling the dice to get a toothpick is pretty ridiculous. I'd much rather spend my time doing something similar to ram racing to get an achievement. I realize it's only been a few days and the chances of the toothpicks dropping is pretty likely, but I'd rather get this behind me and go raid or something. Even if there were some kind of trading system with daily quest items to get what you needed would be nice. Donald Trump is an achiever, the guy next door that won the lottery just got lucky.

Keep that up for the remaining 10 days of the event and it is quite likely that you will get the Hallowed Helm... though we were talking about toothpicks here - do you not have any of those yet either?

I've also been killing HH at every opportunity *including last year* and still haven't won the helm on my achievement main (used to be my main, but he's a shadow priest, maybe he'll be my main again come 3.3). any chance of making the helm account bound or allowing group members to trade it around for the achievement?

The shadow priest formerly known as Xenophanes

I'm not really sure how these numbers are possible. Halloween has been out for about 80 hours so far...Unless you are using 4 characters every hour...

Exaggerate less please.

Bornakk FTW in this thread. All the way.

Achievements are fun and challenging. If I miss something in a seasonal event, I try harder next time and hope for the best. I don't DESERVE every achievement I want.

I'd love a 310% mount, but if I don't have one, it doesn't lessen my enjoyment of the game. Nor does it make me want to flame the forums about how unfair it is that there aren't easier ways to get it.

Keep the faith Blizz.

That or add a reasonable manner of Toothpick acquisition that is not RNG-based.

Ie. Quest to cut a branch from the world tree, quest to obtain a whittling knife from a holiday quest mob in placed in an instance (ie. undead strath?), quest to find an approriately skilled whittler to carve the toothpicks, quest to bless the toothpicks with plaque-fighting, teeth-whiting goodness from another holiday mob. Thus creating an "Achievement".

Continuing to defend an RNG-based process whereby once every hour a player must rely on "luck" to obtain an item that is part of a time-limited holiday "achievement" required for a year-long Meta Achievement is just silly.

Further Blizzard has had the good sense to remove most RNG-based achievements from the Meta, and or restructure holidays to make RNG-based drops also obtainable by quests.

Thus, the defense of RNG-based status quo is that much more unpalatable at this stage of the Meta's implementation.

I think what everyone is trying to say here is why should such an important achievement be so much based on the RNG system. It really takes the "achievement" out of the equation when it's based entirely on luck. Maybe I'll get lucky and graduate from college...or maybe I'll study and work my ass off to get the achievement. Maybe I can visit the gas station and grab some Engineering degree scratch-off tickets. I want to achieve my Drake, not get lucky. This holiday is beginning to remind me of the "Higher Learning" achievement. We shouldn't be banging our heads against the wall over a toothpick.

Currently there are no plans to make any changes to the helms or the toothpicks, we still have a lot of time for the event to complete so we will see how it plays out.

Or you could just keep trying for the next 10 days? The event has not ended and you still have more then enough time to get the tooth picks. 10% drop rate is more then generous. Even if you only played 2 hours a night that's (3 x 14) 42 chances to get the tooth pick. The helm and pet have a different drop rate and you have to compete with other players when they do drop.
