I'm pleased to announce to the tanking community that I've successfully tanked toc 10 on my shaman. mind ye i died at 5% on anub but fortunately our pally tank was alive to taunt and our heals were insane. My unbuffed EH going into this was 34k health and 22.5k armor (26k with ironshield pot up). I had very VERY basic avoidance (25% dodge 6.2% additional chance to be missed). Though i dont recommend someone rolling a shaman tank for their main tanking class, it can be a VERY fun proccy tank if your bored of your old warrior/baer tank.

Q u o t e:
OMG now we have to compete with shamans?

You aren't getting my tanking weapons.

Traditional tanking weapons tend to be terrible for Shaman: They can't use swords, they're far too fast for Stormstrike, and the STR itemization is useless.

It's the Frost DK tanks that will be fighting with Shatanks for the slow DPS one-handers

not quite. Resilience doesnt affect your stats displayed under defense. Resilience still reduces chance to be crit in pve (and crit damage taken, though you should NOT be getting crit in pve). I use a combination of resil/def to reach 5.6% reduced chance to be crit, similar to how druids did at 70. The only part of resilience that is exclusive to pvp is really just 'reduces all damage taken by x% against players pets and minions."
Shaman are simply a mini bear tank that stay alive through carefully managed cooldowns, instant cast self heals, and glyphed stoneclaw absorbs.

Not that it makes a difference to me, but I see nothing about NRB

Loot follows the Law of Inverse Need - The more you need an item, the less likely it is to drop. The corollary is what you need is guaranteed to drop when you are not in the group.

Wow.......there's a Shaman I know that always jokes about tanking when we ask who is tanking what......but seriously.....that's awesome. That is just awesome.....healers have to be off the wall.

Keep up the good work!

And to whoever the warrior is who was crying about him being crittable......make sure to look at his stats before you talk. Resilience + Defense = uncrittable

Good job on putting together that gear set, I bet it's fun, but you're definitely a mana sponge. Lol.

Warlocks, hunters and Shamans really would like a Long-Term fix to PVE and PVP. They want a viable and stable PVE and PVP spec all the time, not just patch to patch.

I wonder if you might not make a shaman tanking guide to sticky? I realize there are detractors and this is a flavor aspect of the game, but it can't be denied that you are tanking these instances, and I'm sure many shaman would love to give it a try. I've watched your how-to videos, and they're pretty decent, but could use some development in particular rotations or priorities you use.

Aside from that, a question I find myself asking is over your frequent use of casting in your tanking the heroics. At what points would you deem it necessary to use a cast and close off your dodge/block tables in order to build threat?

All I got outta the vids was that if you outgeared the encounter your raid can experiment around and do easy content in unorthodox ways. While interesting to watch it little more than a novelty act. Grats to the OP on getting his raid to agree to it which was probably the most difficult part of it.

All I had to do to laugh at this was look at the video's time. 10 Man Norm ToC is such a joke, my 10 man group blows through anub in ~90 secs (gg old Gotta Go achivement eh!)

Any class can tank if these conditions are met:

1) Uncrittable via Resil or Def
2) 30k Life
3) Healers that like wasting time on boss fights healing more than they have to - *its like delibretely standing in fire* - healers like that right?
4) dps who enjoy autoattacking bosses and going to make a sandwich so they dont pull threat.

DPS might not mind it, they do get a sandwich outa the deal. But for the healers and the time wasted not using a class with tanking talents/abilities, who would manage to pull more than a mighty ~2.3k tps, is more gratifying than any amount of e-peen points you may receive.

*Edit* I do kinda find it ironic that enhancement shamans have a greater stam increase in talents than warriors and dks do. Someone should do a spreadsheet, and see how much EH they have compared to the others, then watch some tanks ##@@% and moan about the results, regardless what they are =P.

Q u o t e:

No one was crying you idiot. L2internet.

Q u o t e:

So basically this means as long as your heals are uber, you can take a 33k crittable tank to ToC and down all the bosses?

What i read here just annoyed me I guess.......1) This tank doesn't even understand what resilience does and 2) He's not even giving credit where credit is due. It just really seems like a waaaaaaaaaaaaaaa pay attention to me and my annoying comments. So yes, crying, imo.

I agree on the crying supposition. What is the point in coming to this thread to tell him he performed sub-optimally in comparison to a traditional tanking class?

Because it's the internet? Way to have fun.

The only times you should be casting anything as a tanking shaman, it should be instant cast. There are however times in heroics where Maelstrom will proc to 3 and you NEED to unload a chain lightning NOW, regaurdless that itll be a .9sec cast. When i tank heroics i generally try to shoot everything with 10-14k threat in the first 8seconds of combat, Maelstrom wont always proc to 5 right away, and we have to settle for 3 (-60% cast time) to get that second chain lightning off. Since we're generally only taking 1.7k-4k damage per swing in heroics, we can just pop a stoneclaw absorb before casting to eliminate spell pushback for that cast.

In 10man content everything MUST be instant cast aside from the initial pull. Its important to watch your cds, and determine (by how your well heals can keep you up) wether to use those MW stacks to self heal. I generally only use MW for heals when i dip below 50%. Some fights you need to save that heal and leave it stacked at 5 in anticipation of an influx in damage taken (Val'kyr fight, when they're about to gain a special ability). Note that the longer ye leave it stacked at 5, your wasting maelstrom procs, so fast judgement is crucial.

How to tank enhance feat. Sharicasmi pt2 (watch part 1 first)

Part 1 is fairly old but gives you the basics of shaman tanking. Also gives you a general idea of what to expect going to tank your first heroic. Part 2 is just advanced techniques, itemization, how to get around not having taunt for gluth/beasts of northrend style fights.

Q u o t e:
Grats to the OP on getting his raid to agree to it which was probably the most difficult part of it.

I'm well known on my server for shaman tanking. I have good guild support, unlike many less fortunate shaman tanks, and I've pugged heroics with a couple hundred people. Setting up my shamans raids isn't that bad really, the healers were pretty excited to be able to participate in the event (there were 5 3-5k HPS healers initially, two had to go dps for us). I also play 2 other decently geared tanking toons so there's always a failsafe to fall back to if we hit a brick wall.

Q u o t e:
4) dps who enjoy autoattacking bosses and going to make a sandwich so they dont pull threat.

LOL my threat + my wifes tricks glyphed rogues threat = a net avg of 5ktps. Most tanks fail to notice the 'tricks of the trade' icon and buff and just assume they're always 10k tps because they raid with 2 rogues, even though each rogue is basicly giving their tank a net avg of 1.4k tps unglyphed 2k tps glyphed. Raid tanks have a hard time figuring out their AVG TPS when there's a rogue around, since their threat gets so inflated by the initial tricks. But yeah in all seriousness these folk are doing less than amazing dps because (if you armory them) youll notice alot of them aren't that geared, or dps is their offspec. It's the healers that are geared insanely for this group, the dps only has to meet toc 10 benchmarks.
