Can someone clarify what role the player character represents in WoW.

Are we some random towns person who gets caught up in crazy shenanigans.

Are we in faction mercenaries.

Are we foot soldiers, captains, officers of our faction

Do we even exist lore wise?

If Sylvanas is guilty, then the Alliance need to be held accountable for not arresting Arthas after the Massacre of Stratholme.

We're adventurers. Our loyalties are to our home faction and to ourselves.

I'd make the comparison to the standard hero unit in WC3 in terms of ability.

RPPVP is not either/or...just as "lol" is not a punctuation mark.

No.

Probably not.

We're probably somewhere around that.

Q u o t e:

We're here, aren't we? We exist.

The road to destiny is long and hard.

Litter it with bodies.

The intro needs to be updated. The story is that we're peacekeepers on the home front since all the actual soldiers are off to far off lands fighting wars.

Well, we've been to those far-off lands now. So I guess we start out as peacekeepers and townspeople caught up in crazy shenanigans, then become full-blown faction mercenaries. Keep in mind that the PC's will do ANYTHING for money or armor.

Definitely mercenaries. Adventurer is just a PC term for it. If you doubt me, think about how many quests you have completed that did not involve some form of material gain.

I just find it funny that nobody except for maybe the Lich King at times question us always showing up at major battles in the name of what the bad guy keeps in his pockets.

You forgot Kael'thas. He's the first person to actually lampshade our avarice in search of the greatest weapons and armor the world has to offer.

Q u o t e:
Kael'thas Sunstrider yells: Your monkeys failed to finish the job, naaru! Beaten but alive... The same mistake was not made when we took command of your vessel.

Kael'thas Sunstrider yells: All for what? Trinkets? You are too late. The preparations have already begun. Soon the master will make his return.

Pretty much sums it up...we killed him just to get his shinies.

The next chapter being Cataclysm, which will completely mess up the continuity.

As a previously-immortal Night Elf, I apparently cowered in a forest for millennia and then, once I became mortal, suddenly decided to rush around two worlds, slaughtering beasties and carrying packages around for heroic characters, legends of our time, who had nothing better to do than to stand around beneath giant question marks.

So, my character is just another gullible idiot.

Cataclysm doesn't mess up continuity, it just makes the planet finally respond in more then separate zones and continents.

Think about Goldshire: If the Alliance get Worgen, they will have a LOCK on ERP.
They will have the futa crowd with the Draenei, and the furry crowd with Worgen.

But hang on, how are you not (in effect) still immortal?

For that matter, we are all immortal.

Sure our bodies may occasionally be rendered unusable but we just walk back to them as ghosts and reanimate and then we are as good as new.

So how are we not immortal?

Just to go into the side of the Alliance, since I never played as Horde, but the major quest lines involve from the starting area...we're there to make sure the surrounding wilderness is kept tame by doing some pest control (troggs, kobolds, wolves, whatever) then we move on to stop a coup against Stormwind (Defias). After that, it's pretty much up for debate on where we go next, but it's usually more opportunities peacekeeping and menial labor for wages. Stuff like collecting supplies, finding missing people, that stuff. Then we move on to stop a direct attack by dragons and dwarves (the entire Blackrock complex) as well as putting a dent in scourge forces in the Plaguelands. Stopping old gods, troll gods, elementals, and more Scourge along the way.

Then we go to Outland to stop the Burning Legion and Illidan the Betrayer...while STILL doing menial mercenary work.

Same follows in Northrend with putting a stop to the Scourge once and for all...and we still do menial tasks for higher reputation and money. Honestly, what purpose could a jousting tournament serve when fighting the Lich King? Is he going to hop on a Dreadsteed and challenge us to mounted combat or something?

...for that matter, why can't anyone else do this? Seriously, except for the PC's and the endless soldiers of Army X, people die when they are killed. I wouldn't have had to worry so much about Crusader Bridenbrad if he could just walk back to his body from the graveyard up the hill at the Argent Tournament grounds.

We weren't Dead, we were only Mostly Dead™. I think that's how the RP Servers (and The Princess Bride) handle it. Clearly true death must be possible, or why would anybody be afraid of anything? It would make life Azeroth into some kind of... game!

There's little to no chance they'll change or replace every quest to reflect the changes that have happened in Azeroth, much less Outland, thus the continuity will be destroyed.
