limit-reached limit-reached
Out of the all the people that I work and play with only 2 of them changed over to battle.net account. Within a week BOTH accounts were hacked. The players lost their characters. Lost their gear. Blizz took a week to restore, but couldn't restore achievements and events they had done. And before I get a bunch of people who respond and say things like "get an anti-virus" or "make a new email account", the point is that there ARE security concerns and this change to battle.net is fine for some people, but not everyone wants to join. The option has been out there and there are still a lot of people who didn't join for a REASON. No one likes being forced into anything. Not at work, and not at their hobbies.

I have played this game for almost 5 years. I know they will not miss my subscription fee. But if I am gonna lose it all anyway, quitting isn't as big a deal. I watched blizzcon and I was excited about the upcoming expansion. I am responsible for quite a few of the reservations for the upcoming expansion where I work, speaking highly of blizzard seemingly turning a corner and truly listening to what people had to say about their game, but this topic has caused issue for some time and has legitimate concerns to which blizzard has not even begun to recognize. So I was wrong about blizz turning the corner.

No one likes to be forced into anything. Anything. But you are asking us to put our account security in jeopardy just so you can advertise your other games to us. Believe me, we all know about your other games. I know that others will quit as well, and that you won't miss us. I was good run for me and I can't complain too much about the time I spent here as I have met many new friends and had great times, but it is over. If you can force us to do this, who knows what you will force us to do next. That just isn't a ride I won't a ticket for.

Peace.

Well, no one is forcing your friends or yourself to play.

It's been mentioned several times, by both greens and blues that it's not Battle.net at fault here.

Do your friends visit dodgy websites?
Do your friends respond to "Blizzard" emails with "Hai, sure, my password is...."
etc...

It's the old fallacy of an unproven cause and effect.

Battlenet merge, one week later compromised account.

One is not necessarily the cause of the other.

While it is an unfortunate circumstance for your friends, your evidence is anecdotal. The fact remains that 10's of thousands of players have already merged to Battle.net accounts without issue. The fact also remains that many World of Warcraft accounts have been hacked over the years without any association to Battle.net accounts. The security measures in place for our Battle.net account system are no less robust than those in place for standard World of Warcraft accounts.

We're simply saying that players will need to switch over to our new account system to continue playing World of Warcraft, as it will ultimately offer a much better system and set of features for Blizzard gamers going forward.

The issue here is on your end. Why would hackers bother compromising account information if blizzard databases were compromised. They would instead steal credit card information, which would be a much faster way to get money.

Also Battle.net is a NEW system, and if anything would be more secure than the old authentication server. The truth is, your friends are probably still waiting for their free trial mount that they were whispered about in game, which ironically asks you to make a battle.net account beforehand for.

Lesson learned: get smarter friends.

Only "10's of thousands"?

Is the active sub number still 11 million?

Hmm...

Stop making WoW more important than your friends, family, career, etc. Yes, I'm talking to you.

I don't have the exact numbers in front of me, but I'm referring specifically to the number of US World of Warcraft accounts that have been attached to Battle.net accounts in this case.

Exactly my point. But most people are too eager to insult someone because they don't share their point of view to think about silly things like 10's of thousands instead of millions, but hey, they don't know me or my guildmates/friends and still assume that we are stupid enough to fall for the trial mounts, etc. I wouldn't expect a well thought out or informed answer from most people that post.

That being said, while i didn't agree with the blue post by any stretch, I do appreciate the blizz poster taking the time to read the post.

Have been using B.net account since you could first merge them(thought I would get a penguin pet like I did in beta D: ) has 0% problem with it. Don't be stupid you won't get hacked.

It's not that hard folks.....

Don't choose your mother's name, street you live on, or dog's name as a PW. Choose two unrelated words and change some random character into a number, and voila, practically unhackable password.

Then, once you have one, NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EV ER, EVER, EVER, EVER send it in an e-mail, on a website that isn't an https:// in the worldofwarcraft.com domain, or anyplace else that isn't logging into WoW client or handling WoW account stuff.

Yes, this means you can't buy gold (they ask for your password). Yes, it means you can't just let the level 30 looking forlorn in Orgrimmar "I just want to see what a level 80 plays like so I know if I want to keep this toon". It means you can't go to a random "Opt IN for BEta Key/Free Mount/Gold" website.

Basically, don't be a frickin moron, and you'll never get hacked.

Capiche?
