hmm the thngs you see on wowinsider.com

http://www.wowinsider.com/media/2007/10/aa1003.jpg

the picture of the planet hovering over the Black Trmple is Azeroth....

which means the distance between the 2 planets is....

(Actually given the size of the image i could calculate the distance, but I feel safe saying the 2 planets must form a binary planet orbit given that you can make out details on the surface of azeroth..

Nah, the closest analogy to the twisting nether would be like warp in star trek, it's just a way to get around faster to places in real space. Except it's filled with demons. Rawrdemons.

There is a really, really neat view of "Azeroth" from Illidans room on top of BT.

Either way I was woundering a lot of the same things you guys brought up, guess we'll find out some day.

Think of the twisting nether as the void between realities. Distances dont matter there, which is why the portal travel works. What i want to know is, if we are that close together, then why didnt anyone on azeroth NOTICE the gigantic exploding planet when Draenor was torn apart? I mean, if the moon were to explode one day, im fairly sure we would notice almost immeadiatly.

An alternate dimension filled with demons has been a common theme since the beggining of religion, let alone writing and game making. They may change the wording around here and there, calling it hell, or tarterous, or stovikore (sp?) but it hasnt been an original idea for roughly 20 thousand years.

Those streamers you see in most Outland skies, I always figured were a visual representation of the Twisting Nether. Sort of like hyperspace highways, conduits from world to world. They twist and wind through the Dark Beyond (which is what they call space), connecting various places that have active portals.

On the topic of astronomy, has anyone seen the smaller blue moon in the last year or so? It used to be a fairly common sight, but I haven't seen it since sometime around the weather patch, even while spending quite some time at all hours leveling up a draenei. Just the big white moon, no little lumpy blue moon.

i can imagine that the demons may have moved outland to orbit azeroth after they learned where it was and outland was destroyed... but, even a small moon exploding that close to azeroth (if it was there to begin with) would have been an extinction level event for the world below, i don't care how much magic you have... maybe dalaran would have survived

this is most likely a magical / nether induced spacial / dimensional lensing effect of some sort, or illidan's personal view

From what I understand from reading the online story "Unbroken" (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/story/unbroken/index.xml), it seems like the view of the planets over Outland is some sort of distortion caused by the Twisting Nether. I don't think the planets are actually that close, might cause some gravity problems :)
In any case, it's probably either just an Easter Egg, or Illidan really liked that location for his headquarters because of that specific view the distortions gave him.

They look a little too close to be a binary system. I was thinking more along the lines of Draenor being a moon of Azeorth, or vice versa. Binary planetary system never really are stable if both planets are near equal size (or even somewhat equal). The only binary systems we have seen are large gas giants and a rock planet. (To my knowledge)

If I had a choice I woulda gone with Nagrand.

Crepuscular rays always get me, blue sky barely washing out the worlds beyond and wind-driven clouds scudding along. It's the best sky since Hinterlands (the blue of daylight and blood red at dusk is probably the best coloration in Azeroth).
