Run the Registry Editor
***NOTE: Using the Registry Editor incorrectly can cause damage to your system. I am an IT Professional and am in Windows Registry Editor all the time & am very comfortable using it. You have been warned.

Navigate to this registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CreativeTech\Emu10kx\DriverSettings\Wave\Pin#00000002

Change the Turbo value from 1 to 0.

Reboot your computer, run WoW & test.

This has definitely corrected my problems.
My sound is all better now. I was experiencing very busted positional audio on my 5.1 speakers, glitched out sounds, missing sounds, etc. I was not experiencing any lag, latency, or any other issues at all -- only bad sound.

In the game, I have Sound Channels at Max, Reverb on, Sound Effects on, Ambient Sound on, Sound at Character, Error Speech off.

My System:

Windows Vista Ultimate
Athlon FX-62 Dual Core CPU
Asus M2N-SLI Delux mobo
2GB PC6400 RAM
One BFG Tech 8800GTX OC 768MB Video Card
Creative X-Fi XtremeGamer sound card

After the patch, my positional audio was screwed - I was missing sounds, sounds were coming from the wrong directions, and some wierdness with sound in general - it was definitely hosed.

This is how I tested this fix:

Drop an Earthbind Totem, and listen for the pulse noise.

Move so the totem was directly behind me.

The pulse noise would be gone - I should have still heard it in my rear speakers, but it wasn't there.

Did the registry tweak above, and tested again. Earthbind totem pulse noise behind me is Restored, and everything sounds much better.

I do not know what this mysterious little REG_DWORD is or what it does, but I'm much happier with WoW now since Tuesday's patch. ;)

Hope this helps and Good Luck!

-Potpie

Edit: I've got feedback from several guildmates that the registry edit has conclusively and significantly corrected their issues since patch v2.2.0.

Well to be honest I flipped it just for the hell of it without knowing exactly what it is for. ;)

Further research and studying the pinout of the EMU10kx DSP (Digital Signal Processor) chip on Creative Labs sound cards has led me to a theory:

Pin# 2 on the EMU10kx is XTL_IN

I'm an electronics geek by education and nature, so that tells me "crystal input". OK - a fixed oscillator frequency goes IN to that pin on the chip. The EMU10kx is only a 48 pin chip by the way - not very many pins for as cool as it is.

Anyway - I think that Trubo registry key is a switch that changes the clock frequency on the XTL_IN signal on the EMU10kx DSP chip.

Turning turbo off = lower frequency = better WoW sound.

Make sense? Sounds logical to me anyway. ;)

worked beautifully for SB Audigy 2 ZS. Went from org taking 5minutes (literally timed it, a little over 5 mintues) to load NPCs.. let alone players, and 4 fps... to loading in a couple of seconds and 30fps after doing this..

Don't know how you figured it out, but thank you

This fix is working great for guildmates who meet the following conditions:

1. Audigy2 or newer sound card
2. Windows XP or Vista

I have had two reports from friends with Audigy1 cards - this registry edit did not work for them.

Or possibly reposted a a fix that Theldesmoth posted about 12 hours before you.

If you discovered this on your own, then my props to you, however if you are simply reposting without crediting him...shame on you!

Your explanation is a bit more detailed and clear, thanks.

If you're uncomfortable digging into your registry and happen to have an Audigy 2 ZS (or similar, it seems the SE versions do not have this registry key) you can created a .REG file that will add/change the entry for you.

To do this you'll need to turn off "Hide Extensions for Known File types". To do this simply click Tools -> Folder Options in any folder on your hard driver. Once in the Folder Options window click "View" and uncheck the "Hide Extensions for Known File types" (your files should now show their extension next to them, .txt, .reg, etc. for example).

Now, to create the .REG file create a new text document and call it something like "Turbo" (it doesn't really matter what you call it). Once the text file is created and you have it open for editing paste the following in (note the first line may be cut in half depending on your screen resolution but it should be one line):

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Creative Tech\Emu10kx\DriverSettings\Wave\Pin#00000002]
"DataIntersection"=dword:00000000
"Turbo"=dword:00000000

Once you have this pasted save the text file. Now navigate to where you have your text file placed. Right click the file and change the extension from "Turbo.txt" to "Turbo.reg", window will give you a message about changing file types, just click yes. The icon on your txt file should of changed to a white page with what looks like a cube made up of a bunch of smaller green pieces. If this happens you were successful in changing the file type.

Simply double click your new REG file to add it to the registry (it will change the Turbo value from 1 "on" to 0 "off") and then restart your computer.

Also, if you're like to create one to turn it back on simply created another reg file using the above steps (minus turning off hide extensions as that's already been done and you do not need to repeat that step) and change the last line to read: "Turbo"=dword:00000001

I have windows xp home and SB audigy 2. I gave this a shot and I was able to hear more in the game. But most of the sounds are still to low for me to enjoy the game. I cant hear most sounds from anything more then 20 yards aways, cant hear summons, drain life and health funnel have no sound and when casting SB or Immolate I can here anythig but when it is fired, no crackling fire sounds or the humming of a SB being made.

It very irritating that to hear the sounds in WoW I have to change from surround sound to meesly desktop speakers and even then the sound is no where near the quality it was before the last patch

Lower frequency usually comes with a side effect. Does this come with a performance hit? The issue is possibly due to an overheated chip somewhere, which wasn't affecting the old sound engine.

OK, thanks for this! I've been having no sound on WoW since patch 2.2.0 and frankly, it sucks!

I'll give it a go once I get home and see if it works. Very disappointing that Blizzard has not made this a priority.

I am running Soundblaster Audigy and Windows XP as well.

So, I'm seriously considering trying this - anyone have a bad experience from making this change? Have the effects of making this change persisted (i.e., does it really appear to be a permanent fix? at least till the next patch that messes things up?)
