The lore of this game is one of it's strongest assets. I hate it when it so easily retconned or cast aside. How do you think Blizzard is going to reconcile Night Elves and Arcane Magic users? Isn't this the reason for the beginnings of the Druidism Culture, the fall of Azshara, the Naga, Illidan's original imprisonment and a whole host of other issues. Given their past how can the night elves possibly turn back to magic?

Is blizz simply opening the game up as much as possible before letting it wind down?

I am not real sure how I feel about some of theses changes, don't even get me started on Troll Druids........

I think NE Mages and Troll Druids (see: ZA and ZG) work better than say, Gnome Priests or Tauren Paladins.

We'll have to see what the lore is. Right now, the only obvious Lore-hole they've admitted are Worgen DKs.

Apparently I'm "haughty."

With all due respect, You don't get much more of a gaping whole in lore than a Night Elf using the arcane arts. It has been forbidden for thousands of years.

Considering even without immortality night elves live for thousands and thousands of years, it's quite possible that enclaves of night elves survive to this very day where arcane magic is still practiced. If that's the case it could be that story elements in Cataclysm bring them out of the shadows (so to speak) and put arcane magic back on the table again for night elves in general.

Hunters actually use arcane magic already (arcane shot, for example), so it's almost like it's sort of accepted but that since so many awful things happened during the early years that are tied to arcane magic it was outed by society as something to focus on.

If anything, a return to arcane night elves is a return to the early days of WoW's lore.

Just like how the ability to travel to an alternate dimension at will and fight against 40 small knife-wielding leprechauns for phat lewtz makes so much sense in lore?

NE mages can easily fit, and druidism existed long before NE mages were exiled.

Also, lets hear the lore before we make these kinds of threads.

Yes, and they long since ceased to be Night Elves. See Queen Azshara and the Naga. Blood Elves != Night Elves.

" because they are sweet " - direct quote from blizzcon.

and seriously for the millionth time the lore works for blizzard, blizzard dosen't work for the lore. they could say zerg rained from the heavens and it would fit the lore because what ever the craters of the lore say is correct is the correct lore.

That definitely speaks for EVERY. SINGLE. night elf mage right?

The ones who traveled to EK and became High Elves? They were formerly Highborne.

It's stupid to assume EVERY Highborne traveled together to EK.

Some stayed behind. Its stupid that people keep arguing about these sort of things. Ah WoW forums....

Class-based restrictions in RPGs are, for the most part, ridiculous in the first place.

Just because the Night Elf society has banned the training/use of Arcane magic does not mean that a Night Elf cannot learn said magic, which in turn does not mean that a player shouldn't be able to choose that as an option.

That said, the way they are implementing Night Elf Mages is perfectly reasonable, and you need to learn2lore to understand why.

They finally realize that in order to fight fire, one must also be able to fling fire and ice back at em. They have already said there will be "quests" explaining all the new race / class combos. I find it interesting that they are finally moving the story ahead, been 5 years with the same things happening really.

oh yeah and as stated above
