There are probably not a ton of former EQ players here. But for those who are, the "Path of the Titans" sounds an awful lot like the EQ "Alternate Advancement Points" that were introduced in... Scars of Velios I think?

Basically once you hit max level, you still got xp, but each 'level' you got a point you could spend to specialize your character.

The problem was that, max level was no longer max level. It was important you had certain AA skills for raiding.

So I wonder if WoW will be the same? Higher end guilds might require "Level 85 with 200 Path of Titan Points" or something like that.

Except that there will be a cap on how fast you can earn them. It will probably be done with dailies or something mundane.

The great thing about AA's was that you got a group of friends together and could sit around and grind them while watching TV and chatting in vent. Questing alone is freaking lame, I hope it doesn't go that direction. Plus AA's changed the character pretty dramatically or added something that was just awesome (MGB anyone?) and I don't expect them to make these nearly as powerful because then they would become basically required.

We shall see.

Exactly. That's what I'm curious about.

It's funny you mentioned Mass Group Buff. On my cleric in EQ, that was one of the first AA abilities I got. It wasn't THE first, even though the raid leaders were pushing for that. There were a couple other abilities I wanted, that was like 9 years ago, so I forget now :-p.

It's gonna be rough for chronic players of (level 80) alts like myself. Either you get to your weekly cap fast enough that it's sort of trivial to do, or you're going to have a much harder time keeping multiple characters current. I do really like the idea in general of non-gear based progression at level cap, however.

I just hope that if the bonuses really are essential (even if they're essential for more or less social reasons--"oh, you're only at level 1 on the path? Haha...yeah right you're coming into this entry level raid...") somehow, they give us a way to keep multiple characters moving somehow. There are possibilities between it being so easy that all your alts can more or less automatically keep up or it being so hard that you basically have to pick a single main or stagnate.

Might be semi-good, might have people finally decide what they really want to do, and build one toon to its fullest potential. I am not bad mouthing alts, but there are some people that have so many alts and have no mains that they really never get a toon going well enouph to do anything of consequence with it, you know the players that QQ that 50 toons per account is not enough and they have 3 accounts at max toons.

Well, it's nothing like that for me oO. It's just maybe 4 or 5 80s that I really love to switch between and dabble around on each. Maybe it would be good to be steered into choosing one :p

Although I'd probably have to go druid or paladin because I know I'd be mad at myself if I couldn't both heal and tank (and dps) :c

Well, ya know, the Guild Leveling system is straight out of Warhammer too. So was the Achievement system but they denied it.

Frankly, I don't see anything bad in them taking certain pointers out of other MMOs and putting their own unique spin on it. WoW already has a lot of superior mechanics at its core compared to all the other MMOs out there, but it also needs to provide all the "frills" and convenience tools that other MMOs provide too just to stay upto date and retain their playerbase.

Patch Notes 4.0

Paladins and Deathknight may no longer summon thier class specific mounts. The now must spend several 'levels' for them.

I believe Blizzard stated that they're planning on some kind of catch-up mechanic for people who fall too far behind (alts, re-rolls, etc.)

As for the gating mechanic, they're putting that in place specifically so that you can't binge-grind it all in one sitting, because if you *could*, then you'd also be *obliged* to.

Except that 3/4 of the stuff I heard about at Blizzcon was geared towards new players and alts. Doubt that proportion will hold, but Blizzard's clearly spending a lot of time making things easier for people who are rerolling, new, and/or playing alts chronically. I don't know how this system will work exactly, but I hope it won't leave alts totally gimped.

It's going to be like the EQ alternate advancement system....

Only Blizzard is going to do it better & Blizzard's version is going to be more fun since it won't just require to to play one character all day long. It's still going to plateau and have limitations that keep you from being able to level up 24/7 after you hit the level cap.

They are intended to be gated, not grindy. The idea is more that you have a reason to keep coming back to log in even if say you need a break from raiding or it isn't your team's PvP night. We are trying to contrast them with actual levels, which players can blow through very quickly if they are dedicated.

or you could use it as a respec currency, same for using the dual spec.
You need a certain amount of those points for a free respec or something like that.
maybe even a triple spec as dual spec .... this is flexibility but not mandatory to play the game and raid.
