After the announcement of the Global Writing Contest winners, there were many questions asked by the community that we wanted to take some time to answer. We've pulled those questions out and have posted them with answers below.

Q: For those who did not win, are the rights given back to them to edit, add to, or distribute to others their stories?
A: Short Answer:Yes, as long as you don’t make money from it.
Long Answer: We feel that there were a number of works that deserve to be seen by more eyes than just our own. Much like our Machinima policy, all entrants are welcome to publish the pieces they submitted to the Global Writing Contest to other locations: blogs, websites, forums, etc. However, there is a caveat; you are not allowed to publish these pieces in such a way that they would generate revenue, as they are technically our intellectual property.

Q: If characters, concepts, or settings not specifically tied to any Blizzard Entertainment franchises were developed in any of the submissions, are the authors free to use them in other works?
A: Short Answer: No.
Long Answer: Each entry became our intellectual property the moment you hit “SUBMIT” on the contest form. We apologize if this upsets you, and you are welcome to contact our legal team directly if you feel strongly about using your piece (or parts of it) in a revenue-generating fashion.

Q: When will players be able to read the winning story, or the stories from any of the runners up and honorable mentions?
A: The entirety of the winning entry can be found here: http://www.blizzard.com/us/inblizz/contests/writing/winners.html

Excerpts from the finalists can be found here: http://www.blizzard.com/us/inblizz/contests/writing/index.html#excerpts

We currently have no plans to publish any further content from entries to the Global Writing Contest.

Q: Will there be any opportunities to see how other non-winning entries fared against the rest?
A: As stated previously, we currently have no plans to publish any further content from entries to the Global Writing Contest.

Q: Was the Global Writing Contest a one-time event or will it make a return in the future?
A: While we originally intended to only run the Global Writing Contest once, the overwhelming enthusiasm for the contest has caused us to rethink this position. While we can’t guarantee anything at this point, those interested in entering this contest again would do well to start (keep) writing!

Q: Were any pieces disqualified for being published elsewhere (RP forum, blog, etc.)?
A: As long as it was clear that the submitter was the same person as the writer of the published piece, the submission was not disqualified.

Q: Is there a method for soliciting feedback and/or critiques for an entry?
A: Short Answer: No.
Long Answer: Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

I already got a few good stories. I can't wait to share them with more of the community than I am already reaching. I just want to know when, if it does, start again.

"intellectual property" is an amoral concept (and not really property)

Please give WoW an option to resize individual windows (frames) LARGER so that all of us can read it (currently the collective interface can only be made smaller).

Wow, and is that a badly designed page. Here is a hint: Don't require javascript for something as simple as displaying text.

Here's my runner-up entry: Kuma's Song.

http://tzumainn.com/kumas-song.html

It's nowhere near as polished as it should have been - I simply ran out of time, and the latter-half especially is not as refined as the first half. But I'm still kinda proud of it; I've never written anything so long before.

Thank you so much for clarifying, Neth! I am a little heartbroken that there are no plans to post any of the honorable mentions, as I was really hoping to see at least part of my story up on the website. However, I'm much happier knowing that this is not an option than I would have been otherwise.

As night fell, Medv and her boon companions withdrew to the safety of the hills - where they would be free from the clutches of the Wolfoids . . . for now.

Please define a "concept" as it relates to this contest.

A concept is a cognitive unit of meaning, either an abstract object or a mental representation, tied to some sort of representation.

Love is a concept. If someone wrote a story about love, does Blizzard now own love?

Hypothetical situation: an author submitted a story to this contest, then later in life goes on to be a successful novelist. Perhaps her contest story involved the concept of betrayal, and her Pulizer winning novel also involved the concept of betrayal. Given the language of this statement, Blizzard has the right to claim betrayal as their intellectual property.

Conversely, since Blizzard is not claiming any ownership of representation, are writers then free to reuse the specific ways their concepts manifest, but not the concepts themselves? Can we write a story about two people falling in tslove?

What I'm trying to say is the "cover-yer-butt" approach to the legal side of things is a bit disgusting. I know it's not just Blizzard, but all these types of things.
