  • 0. AoE leveling and you, a guide for beginners.   09/05/2006 04:46:05 PM PDT
quote reply
A quick starting note: I keep seeing posts with questions on AoE but we don't have any real guides stickied yet. I drafted this to help with the questions. If anyone likes the guide, instead of just typing "bump" please add some info! Or, better yet, click the biohazard symbol and report the post to blizzard for a sticky. However, the occasional bump to keep it alive (if you like it) is good as well.

Blizzard designed the mage to be the most effective class at inflicting massive damage to large groups of enemies. This comes in very handy in group play and adds another role for the mage in most any party, but it is actually quite a handy tool for dispatching enemies on your own (or with a partner) in a non-dungeon setting. Hopefully the following will prove insightful to tender, blossoming mages.

AoE: A rogue's guide.

Let's start out with your first question:

Mr. Avarice, why are you so handsome?

You're making me blush! Really though, what do you want to know about AoE?

Ok, dreamboat, what exactly is AoE?

Well, young mage, AoE stands for "Area of Effect" and refers to spells which do damage not to any single target, but instead to all targets within an area. They come in two distinct flavors: Area target and instant cast.

Area target spells are ones that require you to place a targeting reticule over where you'd like your spell to land. There is a lot of intricacy to aiming a spell which we'll get into later but first off, here is the breakdown:

Area target: Flamestrike (FS), Blizzard (Blizzard =))

Instant cast: Arcane Explosion (AE), Cone of Cold (CoC), Frost Nova (FN), Blast Wave (BW)

All of these have their distinct uses and ideal situations (i.e. AE is great for doing heavy damage to lots of mobs that are beating on you, while CoC is great for general face pwnage and Blizzard is great fun to make lots of auction house lag).

Ah, I see. So handsome, yet so knowledgeable and eloquent. You truly are a midnight fantasy! But, pray tell, how do I use these abilities to great effect to level?

WHOA THERE! Don't you want to know if you even SHOULD use these spells to level?

Eh, no wai! I totally saw a video of l33t uber pwnage and I want to do it too!!

No doubt you did. However, AoEing to level is a different story than the uberness of Faxmonkey and company at 60 and decked out. You won't be dual-trinketing squadrons of mobs at 30. But you CAN be effective! You'll need an appropriate talent build, a good spot, patience and lots of practice.

The following is advice for horde mages, alliance side will need to step up with their tried and true techniques at low levels.

I would recommend starting as early as 26. You COULD start earlier, but CoC is, in my opinion, a prereq to really learning the trade. Even at 26 you'd probably be earning more xp just doing the easy to find quests in the obvious areas; however, it is a good chance to hone your technique and experiment with the awesomeness that is the most unique way to level, in my opinion, of any class in WoW.

Your starting spec will be something like this:
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/mage/talents.html?0000000000000000000000000000000005010230132000000
Blackdeath suggested this particular build at level 28:
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/mage/talents.html?0000000000000000000000000000000005300230132000000
His point was that gettting those 3 points into Elemental Precision early on will greatly reduce your resist frustrations. I concur.

The important things are permafrost and improved blizzard. Some people don't like 3/3 Improved Blizzard because it's "chill" will overwrite the longer CoC chill, but it's how I roll, so I put it here. If you'd like to do it the other way, go right ahead!

Continue building your points in frost until at 40 you get Ice Barrier. Then go down arcane for clearcasting ... or not! It's up to you.

*NOTE* Stay away from FROSTBITE if you're frost AoE grinding. One odd snare will mess up your whole rhythm.

Once you've gotten your talents chosen and your skills bought, you need to go to your zone and find a nice group of melee only mobs. Find your targets, decide before you run in there all willy nilly how many you're aiming for, where you're pulling them to and what your hotkeys are. Clear out ANY AND ALL patrols that will get in the middle of you and your mobs ... They'll make for a quick trip to the graveyard and a long walk back reviewing your strategy.

Once you're topped off with mana and health, kamikaze in and aggro a group of mobs. Your first few times it is advisable to go for less, like 5 or even only 3, just so you can get the feel for what you're doing.

Ok, now you've got 5 (or 10 or 95) angry farmers trying to stab you with pitchforks ... What do you do?
The first thing you do is point yourself where you had planned to kite them to.
Move that way for a couple of seconds and try to organize your pack of friends into a nice tight ball, then quickly spin (you can jump and turn 180 degrees in the air or just spin quickly with the mouse), face them and blast them with a CoC.
Next, turn back around to where you've planned your hasty retreat, make sure they're still grouped up tightly and blast them with a FN. Then blink forward, turn around and start to ... What's that you say? One of them resisted? Ah crap.

You've got three options now:
1. Run. It's a good option.
2. Sheep the offender, continue your AoE madness and look like a ninja. This is definitely not the easiest route; however, it can be very effective and can save a good pull. You'll need extra mana for this option and some more finesse, so take caution before you decide not to just run it off.
3. Die. It's a bad option, but it will happen if you're not careful.

Ok, so, let's say there were no resists:
You've rounded them up, CoC, FN, Blinked.

You're now at max range with a group of mobs rooted. You need to aim your blizzard so that the furthest away point of your target reticule is just touching the furthest out mob. Drop a blizzard. If you did this right, they'll all be snared by your improved blizzard.

Queue up another blizzard and, while watching your first blizzard's "Channeling" bar, follow the front most mob's feet with the back of your target reticule and click as soon as your channel runs out.

This method will allow you to get 2 full blizzard casts in before the mobs reach you. Once your second cast of blizzard ends your FN cooldown ought to be about up and you can hit your group again. At this point you'll stay close, drop a FS into the group, blast them with CoC and AE any stragglers. Congratulations! You've done it!

In summary:

Gather a group
CoC
FN
Blink
Blizzard
Blizzard
FN
FS
CoC
AE

ZOMG! Thanks!!!

A warm smile is all the thanks I ask.

The following are two lists of AoE spots. I am not responsible for this list, I didn't come up with it and I haven't tried all of the spots. But it is a good resource. However, basically, any place with a tight cluster of melee mobs will do.

(Level: 32-36) Witherbark Trolls [Some Casters] (Arathi Highlands)

(Level: 33-35) Dabyrie Humans - Dabryie's Farmstead (Arathi Highlands
This spot is amazing, I would advise doing this area until 37-38

(Level: 33-35) Hammerfall Orcs - Go'shek Farm (Arathi Highlands)

(Level: 33-36) Silithids - Shimmering Flats (Thousand Needles)
Shimmering flats is to spread out i never did it

(Level: 33-36) Crushridge Ogres (Alterac Mountains)
I've ran through here, I never personally grinded here but it is a viable spot, the mobs are kinda spread out though

(Level: 33-36) Scorpid Reavers/Terrors - Shimmering Flats (Thousand Needles)
same as before

(Level: 33-40) Saltstone Basilisks - Shimmering Flats (Thousand Needles)
The Basilisks are grouped nicely but personally there are not enough to make it worthwhile

(Level: 33-38) Lost One Muckdwellers (Swamp of Sorrows)
Now this spot is amazing. I catagorized this spot into 5 pulls. 2 up at the top camp and three down at the camp below. I did this area until level 41-42

(Level: 35-38) Mirefin Murlocs - NE of Zone (Dustwallow Marsh)
The next best spot, For a frost mage i'd advise doing this spot until 44, just a filler until you get your next blizzard

(Level: 35-38) Syndicate Humans - North of Zone [One Caster per Camp] (Alterac Mountains)
Never liked it, tried it a little bit

(Level: 35-39) Darkmist Spiders - North of Brackenwall Village (Dustwallow Marsh)

(Level: 36-39) Lesser Rock Elementals - NW Corner (Badlands)
Not enough mobs to make worthwhile

(Level: 36-40) Bloodfen Raptors - NE of Brackenwall Village (Duskwallow Marsh)
Seem to be spread out

(Level: 37-39) Elementals [Various Locations & Types] (Arathi Highlands)

(Level: 37-40) Shadowforge Dwarves - Agnar Fortress [Few Casters] (Badlands)
The casters make this a pain

(Level: 39-44) Woodpaw Gnolls (Feralas)
The gnolls have a few ranged mobs, so as a frost mage I did not find this spot to be suitable

(Level: 40-43) Grimtotem Tauren (Feralas)
Again some casters, not advisable, depending on your aoe spec

(Level: 40-45) Wastewater Bandits (Tanaris)
The bandits have casters mixed in, to me there was not enough of these mobs to make it worthwhile, I'd advise doing the murlocks

(Level: 40-45) Southsea Pirates (Tanaris)
Ahhh now LOST RIGGER COVE is where its at. On my server not many people grind this area. I catagorized the area into 5 pulls, will last me until 52. At level 51 im able to grind 40k/hr.

(Level: 41-47) Green Sludges (Hinterlands)

(Level: 41-48) Dark Iron Dwarves [Various Locations] (Searing Gorge)

(Level: 42-48) Dunemaul Ogres (Tanaris)

(Level: 45-50) Thistleshrub Elementals (Tanaris)

(Level: 46-47) Rage Scar Yeti's (Feralas)
(Level: 46-51) Nethergarde Humans (Blasted Lands)
Good spot to level besides the fact of not being able to mount in the mine, a few ranged mobs, not advised unless you have no other option

(Level: 47-50) Northspring Harpies (Feralas) Have alot of casters mixed in with them

(Level: 47-50) Ravasaur Raptors (Un'goro Crater)

(Level: 47-50) Deadwood Furbolgs (Felwood)
Have ranged

(Level: 48-54) Jadefire Saytrs [Various Locations] (Felwood)

(Level: 49-54) Thunderhead Hippogryphs - Northern Peninsula (Azshara)

(Level: 49-55) Jaedenar Forces (Felwood)
Just a bad spot

(Level: 50-52) Felstone Fields [Few Casters] (Western Plaguelands)
The casters don't make it worthwhile in my opinion

(Level: 50-53) Flamekin Imps [Various Locations] (Burning Steppes)

(Level: 50-54) Warpwood Elementals (Felwood)

(Level: 52-56) Sorrow Hill [SE of Anderhol] (Western Plaguelands)

(Level: 52-58) Ice Thistle Yeti's (Winterspring)

(Level: 53-54) Dalson's Tears [Fear] (Western Plaguelands)
Very good area, being UD and having WOTF helps alot. I do 4 pulls in this area, and since wotf is a 2 minute cooldown i have it for both of the fear pulls that i do. Personally i will be doing this area until 60 probaly, unless i find somewhere else. I may try Writhing Haunt, dunno though.

(Level: 54-56) Scarlet Lumberjacks (Western Plaguelands)

(Level: 55-58) Deadwind Ogres [Some Casters] (Deadwind Pass)

Don't bump, just click on the radioctive button and ask for this to be stickied. That way this thread will contain useful information instead of a thousand ppl asking for a sticky.

Anyway, I am updating my Noob FAQ and including this link, since the old AoE guide is now unavailable.

Is frostbite really that bad? The chill effect doesn't seem to last long enough for me to solo AoE grind without Frostbite but I have noticed that one bugger seems to miss being frozen and it totally messes me up. I've been farming at Dabyrie Farmstead lately and I do ok but its most definitely not as easy as I thought it would be. Sometimes I barely pull it off and sometimes I can't seem to do it at all.

Feel free to check out my talent build and offer any advice, I've picked up two Freezing Bands and Staff of Jordan to supplement my gear so I'll be able to do some decent damage for AoE grinding.

I usually run in, iceblock, frost nova, run out, blizzard, cone of cold when they get close, run around like a chicken with its head cut off if the chill is up too early or wait until I can frost nova again and blizzard again, if they're low on damage by that time I'll either cone of cold or Arcane Explosion them down.

What to do when your spot is pilfered:

A lot of times you'll find that one of these (popular) spots is being camped by some other pesky upstart mage (the ones from your own faction can be the worst as you can't just "dispatch" of them) or someone from the opposite faction has decided to take it upon themselves to protect the good farmers of Dabyrie. Either way, your party seems sunk.

Don't despair! There are plenty of other options out there for you!

1. Quest! This is probably the best option. You're going to have a plethora of quests available to you since you've probably been grinding the same spot for 4 levels. That's 4 straight levels of Zen like precision and reflexes... a change of scenery will do you good to freshen things up.

There are a lot of good guides out there that will hold your hand with the exact quests to run and the exact order to run them for maximum xp. However, you can just go to a zone with appropriately leveled creatures, look for your faction's camp, stack up some quests and have at. Look for new groups of mobs that you can AoE - post your finds here!

Plus, changing zones is an effective way to avoid the keyboard bashing frustration that stems from gankers and campers. (Alternatively, you can get on your main (everyone has a 60 rogue nowadays, right?) and camp the little snots until it hurts.)

2. PVP. Start racking up a bit of reputation now, you're going to want to sooner or later; cross server BGs (in most cases) have made low level PVP less of a pain to experience with reduced wait time. You'll also get to have a grand old time kiting warriors to frustration's end and then blizzard snaring the entire zerg. ZING! You might even make a priest or mage friend on your server to grind with and you can't complain about that!

3. Instance. You forgot didn't you! There are these things called "parties" and they are full of people that live just to break your sheep, drink your water and ask you for heals (o rly?). Enjoy the fun of Scarlet Monastery again! Those damn paladins won't just die!

4. Go outside. We all have to do it occasionally, now it's your turn. Besides, you haven't seen your girlfriend in 3 days ... and that's a bad sign because you live together.

One change to the build I made is I put points into Elemental Precision asap.

http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/mage/talents.html?0000000000000000000000000000000005300230132000000

Very frusterating having that one resist in a 12 mob pull ruin it. After I put points into that, AoE leveling was LOADS easier, definitly worth putting points into it either before or after Artic Reach.

Also, another tip is if you are an Engineer (Or can buy Easy Throw Dynamite), stock up on a "backup" AoE incase you run outta mana before they die.... Nothing like getting killed by 10 angry farmers with 3% health. =X

I wish I had a sticky like this when I started my mage...

Not advice, but a question: is it possible to AoE grind with a Fire spec? Is it just not doable without the Chill effect from Improved Blizzard?

It seems to me that the Dazed effect from Blast Wave (not to mention its respectable damage) would fill in nicely after using Frost Nova and before CoC's CD is done. Plus, if you're spec'ed fire, things like Impact and Ignite would process more frequently on the multiple targets, since you'd have more criticals per spell use. (I realize it would only be on individuals within a group.)

Basically, I love Fire, and I'm not going to spec Frost. Should I forget about AoE grinding entirely, or do I just have to use different tactics?

It is probably possible. But, it would definitely be tougher. I actually did a spreadsheet at one point in time where I mapped out a fire spec and frost spec for pure "damage over time" for the duration of the fight. I couldn't get fire to be worth it ... However, I think I did the map with the spells available to a level 40 mage ... Maybe it would be better as time went on.

From what I remember, fire just didn't have the amount of snaring you'd need to keep them kited for a long enough time to kill them without risking the farm too much for my comfort level. You wouldn't have permafrost, blast wave is on a 45 second cooldown (iirc) and nova is on a longer cooldown as well. Flamestrike was definitely nice ... But with a frost build you get Shatter on Flamestrike anyway ... You're also losing Ice Barrier...

I dunno though, if you are going to try it, I'd recommend:

Round them up
FN
FS
CoC
AE while kiting them around ...
Once CoC's snare runs out:
BW
AE while BW's snare runs out:
CoC (if FN isn't up)
Kite them until FN is up
FN
FS
CoC

Looks like a LOT of mana though...Pure theorycraft though. you could run the numbers and see how much damage you're doing (potentially) and whether or not they'd be dead when you ran out of mana.
