  • 0. Change to Flasks in 3.1.0   03/24/2009 05:31:03 PM PDT

As many of you have learned, we will be reducing the duration of flask effects so that they only last one hour. However, all recipes that create flasks will create two instead of one for the same material cost. Additionally, we will be increasing stack size from 5 to 20 as we anticipate players will need to carry more flasks at a given time. Vendor value for flasks has also been reduced to keep the auction house deposit low.

Our goal with the change was to allow players greater flexibility when determining how long they plan to raid, as currently we were seeing many players balance time spent raiding around flask duration. We also anticipate that this change will make using flasks in dungeons and battlegrounds a more reasonable decision for players. Though this change will not occur until patch 3.1.0, we wanted to give as much advance notice as possible in case some of you who are stockpiling flasks would prefer to wait to do so until the change is implemented.

We realize players who currently have stockpiled a lot of flasks may feel like they will lose money with this change, since their current flasks will only last for half as long once 3.1.0 goes live. To partially remedy this, we are going to allow players to exchange any current Northrend flasks (Flask of the Frost Wyrm, Flask of Stoneblood, Flask of Endless Rage and Flask of Pure Mojo) for two flasks with the shorter duration. Flasks from older content will not be grandfathered in, and going forward, it will only be possible to make the flasks with a one hour duration.

Thanks for the turn-in, but were people really complaining that much about 2 Hr Flask Duration? =o

edit: Mixologists still get 2 Hour Flasks, right? Also, how will this affect Elixir Spec? Will a 5 proc turn into 10 flasks, or 7 flasks?

Details please =o

I hate seeing flasks with still almost a full hour left on them after a raid, good change.

This is a very good question... if not, ironically, we'll be better off making as many as possible before 3.1 :p

Pretty good change, being an elixir master myself and my flasks lasting for 4 hours and elixirs for 2 hours my raids last somewhere in between 2 hours and 4 hours, sometimes over 4 hours depending if it's progression night. Well the only boss we haven't done is 25 man Eye of Eternity (Malygos) and shouldn't really take more than an hour to get it done.. Depending on wipes and discussion on how we should do it better and what-not.

So wait, I'm confused by this. Does this mean that

A)Existing flasks will remain 2-hour through the patch and we'll be given the option to exchange LK flasks for 2 1-hour ones when the patch goes live?
B)All flasks will go 1-hour but we'll be able to exchange the 2-hours at some point before the patch?
or
C)Existing LK flasks will automatically be split into two 1-hours when the patch hits?

Too bad this still screws those of us who use Flask of Distilled Wisdom since it's better than any BC or Wrath alternative.

So in short, flasks made pre-3.1 can be exchanged in 3.1 for two flasks as compensation?

I think this is a good idea, and I think it shows that Blizzard is considering some of the issues facing PvE play. My raid group schedules raids to accommodate EST and CST players, so we raid four nights a week from 8:30 server to 11:30 server. It leaves us with the prospect of popping our flask right before the first boss pull and then staggering through the final few minutes on elixirs or basically wasting the second hour on any second flask we take.

I have the same questions some other people have:

- How will the two-flasks per craft be affected for elixir-spec alchemists? Currently a “proc” will produce 2, 3, 4 or 5 instead of 1 flask (for the same mats). Now, it looks like we’ll get 2 every time (though shorter duration, so still 2 hours’ worth)… but will a "proc" still produce 3, 4, or 5 (or 6?), or will the "procs" produce multiples of 2 (i.e., you "proc" 4, 6, 8 or 10)?

- Will Mixology affect the new flasks to the same degree stat-wise, only last for two hours instead of one?

- When you say that pre-WLK flasks will not be "grandfathered" in (with regard to exchanging existing stockpiled flasks for twice as many shorter duration flasks), does that mean that pre-WLK flasks will be unchanged? Or will producing a Flask of Blinding Light now produce 2, 1-hour duration flasks, just like a Flask of Pure Mojo?

I think I get the exchange program, though it seems a common question

It looks to me (if I'm reading the post correctly) that flasks in your inventory (say you have 5 Flasks of Pure Mojo the night the patch goes live) will go from 2-hour duration to 1-hour duration. But, you will be able to exchange them at a rate of 2 for 1 (so you would end up with 10 Flasks of pure Mojo with a 1-hour duration).

A good change, imo. Still 10 hours of flask time, but in convenient 1-hour bites. Makes raid scheduling much easier and more efficient. I don't really see a downside, unless the 2 flasks for 1 crafting cost only applies to Northrend flasks. Just waiting on confirmation from blue on whether the crafting change will be global (I understand that the exchange program will only affect Northrend flasks - c'est la vie)

I like this quite a bit, it is horribly annoying clearing everything in 2 hours 20 minutes and having to waste a 2nd flask

Amazing. With all the things that need to be fixed, that this somehow became enough of a priority to warrant a "fix."

I don't think I know anyone who worried "oh man I've got 45 minutes left on this flask I better not log out right now! I'm totally going to waste spacebucks if I do!"
