I am calling for all add-on developers to go on strike.
Many add-on authors have already posted notice that they are no longer maintaining their projects due to Blizzards UI Add-On Development Policy Sections #1 (and #5 to a lesser extent)
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/policy/ui.html
This policy completely disregards our ownership of the code as Intellectual Property. Blizzard should have no say in how we distribute and get compensation for OUR work.

Read as much of the thread as you can so you can get a well formed opinion before posting.
If you agree with this cause, reply with:
* Your Developer Alias
* The Names of your most popular add-ons
* The URL to where they are/were hosted

It's fine I am sure someone else will take their place making addons or Blizzard will just steal their work because they can now and make their own stuff. Just look at what Blizzard added for the whole dual spec. Hmm that seems alot like Outfitter to me.

People can remove their addons all they want it won't kill the game. You are suppose to play the game and make the addons for the love of the game not the money you can make. Addons are authors wanting to show their skill and love of the game. Sure they put a lot of time and effort into them and I applaud that, but when they start to charge people money is when Blizzard says without our game you have no product. Good day.

So maybe now Blizzard will spend the 20 hours to develop a raiding UI for healers? Something that for the last 2 years they've been relying on the public to provide? HURRAY!

Your right, it won't kill the game.
However, come patch day you will see a very large amount of players upset because their favorite add-ons are now broken/disabled... and this time there will be no updates or fixes.

Look

If you don't like that an addon is popping up and asking you to donate, don't use it

Blizz needs to stop giving in to people crying about stuff.

An Addon for WoW is exactly the same as a game for a Microsoft operating system
It enhances the Operating system

You pay for games for you computer?
Its the same
You play free games?
its the same
You play games with pop ups?
its the same
You play games that ask you to buy the full version at the end?
its the same

Addons help make WoW more enjoyable
From the little ones that open your mail, so you don't have to open 8 pages of successful actions one at a time
(yes people have that many)
To the ones that help the healer save your ass

If the addon developer wants to ask for donates why shouldn't they?
If they want to charge for the service why not?

They had an idea to help make the game better.
It was their idea, their hours of coding knowledge.
Have you ever made an addon?
Have you ever watched someone make an addon?
I have, it takes many days, lots of research, planing, editing, and continual updating.

Ultimately it is up to the WoW player to decide weather or not they want to pay for an addon
Or if they want to use an addon that has pop ups

You pay for wow
You decide how you want to play

If you don't like it
don't use it

but don't stop other people form being able to use addons

This whole thing seems to me that it must have come about form people whining about addons asking for donations in-game, or that they have to pay for an addon
and instead of getting rid of the addon with pop ups, and finding a new one, or finding an addon that they do not have to pay for, they decided to cry about it

This whole thing should have never started.
The next thing you know Blizz is going to say no more addons all together.

Let us decide if we want to use those addons or not Blizzard!!!!!!!!!
they are not mandatory that we use them!!!
So they should not be affecting your sales!
If any thing they are helping you!!!
Just like you are helping Microsoft, and Apple

OMG they made it so you can't spam people in game for donations, they did not make it so you can't ask for donations on your websites. If people are using the down loaders, then be mad at the devs that made those and pulled the people away from your sites.

What it all comes down too is someone got greedy and forced Blizz to take action. I see nothing wrong with me being able to play wow and not have adds/banners come up on my screen. And if you read the policy it says you can't "request" for donations in game, says nothing about just making a statement like "Donations accepted" or something to that nature.

... what "rights" do add-on authors have for creating something for a product that isn't their own?

This is what this entire thing is about, the rights of authors. This has become something people do for fun to something people expect to be paid for. It's a game, and I really don't think 100 mod authors having tantrums is going to make Blizzard really care.

What *rights* do application authors have for creating something for an OS that isn't their own?

That is how I see it as well. Well, not overall, but what the new policies are bluntly stating.

It is a shame, though. I feel that several of my favorite addon authors just might go on strike to support the loss of intellectual property privileges.

How much of this was spurned from the wowglider lawsuit, i wonder?

And those going on strike will be replaced just as easily by people who don't care.
