Q u o t e:

This one caught my attention... is this an attempt to lure the super-casual player back into arenas by allowing them to gain a consistent number of points regardless of how bad their rating is, in exchange for not being able to buy any of the rating gear?

It's kind of funny, but not a bad idea when I think about it since there's been little incentive for the average player ever since most gear had ratings put on it. And this seems like one of the few solutions that wouldn't be completely offensive to those who are protective of rating-limited gear.

Someone will get pissed and call us < 1500 rated arena players "losers getting welfare gear" though; because e-peen only sees the line drawn at 2000.

That one was what really caught my attention too, I think it's a good deal for the starting/casual PvPer

posting to voice my support for 8 point breakeven point as opposed to 12. I did like winning and losing less points. Required more consistent play IMO.

Q u o t e:

To me this just provides less incentive for people to reform teams just because the rating got so low. If a 500 rated team rebuys they are just going to consistantly lose rating, even for wins, until they are back down to ~500. It will only serve to frustrate those players who feel as if they are trapped. If they get the same points then rebuying is less likely and we will see less of that situation.

Not to mention that they'll lose points even faster if they reform, because the system now knows how bad they really are.

I'm still convinced that they're less concerned about teams being excessively reformed, and more concerned about the large number of mediocre players who just stopped doing arena because everything in the system works against them. Either way this is probably a good idea. The only thing you can buy with the extra points and a sub-1500 rating is the blue set, and I doubt anyone will get too upset over casuals getting blue gear a little bit faster.

basically they are increasing where the average is, so that the top end items are more accessible to casual players. Dont expect to get everything but you should be able to get a lot more than before.

as has been stated, it is an attempt to draw casual back since their system only works if there is a large player base.

It would be better if Ratings started at 0. I hate the no. 1500 and teams that win can reach a nice solid friendly number of 1000. Teams that loose more go into negative. I am OCD

An remove those ratings req on hateful gear!! If raiders can get it, why can't someone who just enjoys BG's and Wintergrasp get better gear to pvp?

This would definitely help out arena on a whole if it indeed draws back the casual crowd, right now only the hardcore players are still participating. I am referring to all those players that are actually skilled 1800-1900 players that have been pushed down in the system due to the deflation of participation by the 2200 elite players.

Kalgan:

-Is hidden rating wiped on character transfer?
-What determines hidden rating besides win/loss? Resilience, damage, healing?
-What is the min/max amount of points able to be lost/won now?
-Is the TR/PR cap still 3000 with these changes?

It hightly doubt it. I transferred with my 2s partner. We had about an 1875 rating on our old server. Didn't play a single game on our 2s team post xfer until the new system went up and was fixed." It looks like it's trying to put us back in the 1750-1850 range. I've only ever played with this guy this season.

Just wait for next season, everything will get bumped down the line like it always does.

Of course I'd like to hope that this is a precursor to removing rating requirements from arena gear and spiking the cost up. A cost prohibitive system still provides a carrot for lower rated players to continue playing without allowing them to get more than 1 or 2 good pieces of gear a season.

Great post and I agree that arena needs a bigger player base and more reason to stay involved at lower ratings.

My suggestion would be to add a third way of purchasing hateful gear; buyable with pure arena points, no rating requirement, but at the same arena point prices as the deadly gear. This would give low ranked players a reason to keep playing. (I mean come on you can already buy it with emblems). As new tiers are added each season the prior season gear simply drops down a notch.

Please change my ugly avatar :(

Whatever you did, its still fail. My 3s team is comprised of 3 brand new 80s with no gear. In our 10 arena matches last night we were outgeared (not too surprising) by a huge margine and lost 16 points a game.

Gratz on your match making system so far.

You guys are ruining your game with your senseless facination with arena.

Pvp wasnt broken (a couple class issues aside) in TBC, you have managed to do so in Wrath. Kudos.

You have to go through me first...

- no
- only winning/losing determines the rating

- edit: didn't read this one correctly at first, yes TR/PR do still have a hard cap at 3k, although we don't expect players to get that high regardless.

Listen, and understand. That Kalgarithm(tm) is out there. It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are in the 1300s.

Hehe j/k, sounds like some much needed changes.

They absolutely do not, none of the rating systems have the slightest clue or are in any way affected by what gear you have.

You have to play a certain number of "unfair" games until the system calculates how bad your team is. Once you get past that stage you should be facing more appropriate opponents.

There are likely to be a lot of players with relatively good gear who only start doing arena this week and start with the default rating, so don't expect the new system to prevent you from getting roflstomped right away.
