0. New Update for Arenas 01/08/2009 05:35:54 PM PST
In order to prevent players from attempting to reach a no decision in Arenas, and to ensure that all Arena matches are completed in a reasonable time frame, a 45 minute time limit has been added to Arena matches. At the end of this time limit if no team has achieved victory, both teams will lose 16 arena rating points. Please be aware that this loss in rating is not currently displaying properly and will instead show as a draw for both teams. This display issue will be addressed in a future update.

So, say I'm fighting a team and I know they're lower. Like, I fought them the game before, beat them, and got 10 points. This time though, something bad happened (See: Orgrimmar arena) and after 30 minutes they kill my partner. If I just heal myself and keep myself alive, I'll only lose 16 points instead of 20? PLUS the other team loses points in a game they should have won 20 from?

I can support a time limit, but why in the world do both teams lose points? Why is it not just a draw? It seems like you're trying to penalize players that end up in long matches, but I can't think as to why.
Blizzard's decisions relating to arena and pvp continue to disappoint.

What exactly was being abused that both teams have to lose points?
Frost Mage / Rogue vs Arcane Mage / Me.
My Mage kills their Rogue and DC's. The frost couldn't kill me and I couldn't kill him, so we just have to sit on our thumbs for another 40 minutes waiting because neither of us want to just lose points and the other team win??
Q u o t e: When we get to the maximum possible Resilience offered by S5 gear, including the DPS increase Rogues will get, I'll be able to get a spell off at 10%. Hopefully it one-shots them.

Take out some of the LOS and a match would only last 2-5 minutes everytime....
Yeah I might even play arenas then.
50% of arenas should be LOS free since LOS benefits some classess more than others.

I'm assuming it has to do with trying to ensure no one abuses this change.
If it was a draw with no point change after 45 minutes:
Lets say you have a 2v2, and it comes down to one guy on each team left, and they are just trading blows with no quick resolution in sight. Both players realize this, and they start using guildies to communicate to each other and make a truce, as both teams don't want to lose the points and there is no sure victor, and so they wait it out. Sure its a bit of time wasted, but both teams would come out with ratings unscathed.
Ever since Arena started, people have done everything they can to rig games, and bend the rules(smurfing, win trading, queue late at night to try to get ideal teams), this would be just another way to do that, to end up against a team that you cannot beat, and have a way to get out of the penalty.
I for one welcome our new time penalty overlords.
So this is my 15 bucks a month..... hard at work.......

Making it so that each team would neither gain nor lose points after the 45 minutes would be more reasonable... it's not like there's any team that chooses to play that long. And for the times when it does happen, neither team should be penalized.
16. Re: New Update for Arenas 01/08/2009 07:30:17 PM PST
actually they should increase the penelty for a game lasting 45 minutes. Any game that last 10 minutes or more should cost both sides a level....yup then you wouldn't have to take out LOS since no one would run around hiding behind it ...they might actually fight...yup...make it happen

good LORD people act as if this is going to destroy huge amounts of records...i think draws are fine or something, but HOW many arenas REALLY last 45+minutes?

the problem is it ENCOURAGES keeping stalemates going.
say i know i'm going to lose less than 16 points if i just quit. its actually better for me to just endure a 45 min stalemate so that instead of giving my opponent 16+ points, i force him to lose 16 points as well.

Why is that better for you? You're probably never gonna see that guy again, why do you care whether he loses 16 points? And especially, why do you care enough to throw away 30+ minutes you could be doing something else?
