Unfortunately, one can only do so much with a forum guide. Therefore I constructed a website exclusively devoted to vanity pets to replace this guide:
NOTE: From this point on, I'll be mainting the site rather than this guide. However I'd very much like to continue the discussion portion of this thread, so feel free to post with your comments.
In real life, I love all kinds of animals. I'm thrilled that the developers of WoW have provided a way for players to enjoy some fantastic and wonderful pets in-game. No, they don't do anything extraordinary. But they do provide ambiance and fun. A rogue with a snake in tow; a moonkin with an owl close behind; a female warlock accompanied by a black cat; a hunter with his trusty "hunting" worg pup. When coupled with certain races, classes or genders, many pets provide a "coolness" factor that can't be reproduced by any other means.
So if you have yet to embrace a little critter of your own, check out the links above and discover the perfect pet for your toon!

EDIT: This post as well as the following three posts contained my original text-based guide to vanity pets. I removed this information because it's no longer being maintained. So rather than have people veiw inaccurate or incomplete material, I'm instead encouraging people to visit the links in the post above. These links will provide the most up-to-date information regarding WoW minipets.

The Worg Pup used to be able to see invisible/stealthed enemies. If someone tried to sneak up on the owner, it would hit that person for 1 damage, breaking stealth/invisibility.
The Smolderweb Hatchling never did damage. Instead it had a nature resist aura. One patch in beta the pet was changed to require level 100, then had the aura removed.

Q u o t e: holeecrap! what part of TB is the prearie dog vendor located? I want one of those!
also, I agree, this is a great info page. Blizzard SHOULD sticky this.
If I remember right, the Prairie Dog vendor is under one of the bridges that leads from the central rise to the hunter rise (on the central rise side). I may be wrong on exactly which bridge he is under but he is under one of them (on the center rise side).
