Clukclukboom’s Pre-Heroic Gear Guide

*Note this pre-heroic gear guide is an independent work by Clukclukboom of Borean Tundra. I have incorporated it in my guide for reference as it shares some of the same gear items and is a good pre-heroic gearing guide. A good way to use these guides together is to use Cluk’s guide as you are leveling and/or not able to run heroics and then gradually upgrade your gear using my guide as you run more challenging content.




A. NOTES

I’ve attempted to put together a gear guide for aspiring raiding moonkin. Couple of points to note:
Edit (2/28/09) – I’ve added Titan-forged gear from Wintergrasp as it is fairly easily accessible.
Edit (2/10/09) – Formatted the lists by removing the stats as they were too cumbersome to read.
Edit (1/23/09) – I’ve now included the Windripper Boots and Leggings as they are in game with patch 3.0.8.
Edit (1/14/09) – I previously did not include BoE epics from 10 man and 25 man raids – I have now included them in the lists (although they are usually rare and expensive) – I have noted them with a “###” before the number so it is easy to tell that they are BoE from raids.

* I have excluded all PVP (except for Winterspring helm and boots as noted above) and Profession BoP items as these aren’t accessible to all moonkin

* The gear is listed in descending order with the best items first – based on the weighting scale I describe below (note that *for the most part* I did not include TBC gear although in many cases T5&T6 and equivalents are as good or better than some of the middling pieces of WotLK gear)

* Some notes on Hit Rating: Moonkin need 341 Hit Rating (assuming you have 2/2 BoP) for a level 83 raid boss, 262 if you have Improved Faerie Fire or a Shadow Priest with Misery. You only need 53 hit rating for a level 82 heroic boss (again assuming you have 2/2 BoP). Alliance moonkin with a Draenei in their group can roll with 26.2 less hit rating because of the racial 1% buff to hit. What this means it that outside of 10 and 25 man raids don’t worry about stacking hit so much, focus on survivability and damage as you run 5 mans to gear up for raids.

* Sometimes I will notate gear as “BiS” (Best in Slot) and I further differentiate between Hit and NonHit so that if you don’t need a slot for hit you can determine what the best upgrade is for you as if hit rating was given a zero weighting.

B. STAT WEIGHTINGS

My stat weightings are based loosely on own weightings (thanks to Adoriele for a great moonkin spreadsheet http://elitistjerks.com/f73/t37800-wrathcalcs_moonkin_dps_spreadsheet/ ) and should be a pretty good baseline for most moonkin with a typical raid spec and traditional MF, SF or Eclipse-based rotation
These stat weightings are also DPS weights so 1 hit rating should translate roughly into 1.3 DPS for an ideal stationary, non-mana constrained fight such as on a test dummy. Note that I’ve weighted Mp5 and Stamina as 0 as they don’t contribute to DPS in an ideal fight and the low weight given to Intellect and Spirit reflect only their contribution to dps, not mana regen. If mana regen or health is a concern to you then weight those stats accordingly. Wowhead has a great feature now that allows you to filter armor and weapons based on your own stat weightings, so if you disagree with my weightings or want to tweak them and are curious how the gear falls out because of that, you can do it quite easily

Heroic Instance Priority List

1. Violet Hold: BiS Hit Trinket, Crit Bracers, nice Hit Chest, decent Haste Legs
2. Utgarde Keep: BiS Head, nice Haste Ring
3. Utgarde Pinnacle – Nice Hit Belt, 2xCrit Legs
4. Azjol-Nerub – 2xChests, decent Crit Boots
5. Nexus - 1H Mace, Hit OH, Crit Gloves, Haste Boots
6. Oculus – BiS Haste Wrist, 2xdecent Trinkets, Epic Staff
7. Culling of Stratholme - Crit Bracers, Haste Ring

3. Kirin Tor to Exalted – decent Haste Chest, decent Crit Belt
4. Ebon Blade to Honored (if you haven’t gotten there already from quests in Icecrown) – decent Hit Cape
After this it’s a matter of preference – neither Ebon Blade or Alliance Vanguard have much to offer past honored (besides crafter patterns and mounts / vanity items)

Emblems of Heroism Priority List:

1. Ward of the Violet Citadel (OH) – 25 EoHs
2. Sundial of the Exiled (Trinket) – 40 EoHs
At this point you will probably decide which is a bigger upgrade for you of the next 2 items:
3. Heroes Dreamwalker Vestments (Chest) – 80 EoHs or Plush Sash of Guzbah (Waist) – 40 EoHs
4. Heroes Dreamwalker Gloves (Hands) – 40 EoHs (these are not really a big upgrade over other heroic drops but the 2 piece bonus is good)
Either of the 2 neckpieces depending on whether you need hit in that slot:
5. Encircling Burnished Gold Chains (Neck) – 25 EoHs or Lattice Choker of Light (Neck) – 25 EoHs
6. Idol of Steadfast Renewal (Idol) – 15 EoHs (since you have nothing else to spend them on why not XD)
Total for all items: 265 EoHs

1. HELMS

Note: Tier 5, 6 and equivalents (Sunwell, Illidan’s, Voidreaver, Hood of Hexing, Spellstrike Hood etc…) will serve you well up until Naxx and you are able to replace them with the Battlemap Hide Helm or Tier 7 and equivalents.

Drops from Heroic Halls of Stone. An interesting ring which because of the consolidation of combat stats for melee and casters this ring appeals to many classes. Hard to equip it because it doesn’t have any spellpower but the hit rating is huge and haste isn’t too shabby either.

Jewelcrafting BoE. Expensive mats and not Best in Slot (although arguably one of the top 2 if you don’t need hit) make this ring a tough one to grind out imo.

Rep reward from Argent Crusade at Exalted. Nice haste ring but not worth grinding out AC rep just for the ring, there are tons of blue heroic drops that are only slightly worse than this ring.

I hesitated to put this ring in here because it’s obviously a melee ring but the hit, crit and the socket make it marginally better than some of the other rings out there although mats are medium expensive (1 scarlet ruby will probably set you back 100g or so). Still if you don’t want people “O.O” at you when you raid you’ll probably want to wait for a spellcaster ring : )

APPENDIX

Boomkin Guide to pre-Heroic/Naxx Gear

First of all, this guide is intended for those who want to quickly gear up to start Heroics/Naxx. As such, I have chosen pieces that fit under the following criteria:

1. There are no random drops off bosses here.
2. There are no crafted BoP items.
3. There are no pieces that require more than Revered with a faction.
4. There are no pieces that require Badges to obtain.

What you will find here is a list of gear that can be quickly obtained prior to starting Heroics/Naxx. Some will be rewards from completing a quest. Some are BoE crafted gear or world drops which should not be very hard or expensive to obtain. Finally, some of these pieces will require you to be Revered with a specific faction. This is easily accomplished by simply doing quests that reward reputation with that faction and in some cases you will probably find that you already have the required reputation prior to reaching level 80 if you've spent time doing quests as you leveled up.

Desired Stats

Heroics and raids are different in that raids will require more +hit rating for you to consistently land spells on bosses. The required amount of hit rating you need to hit heroic bosses(level 82) is only 52(assuming 2/2 Balance of Power). This means that any additional hit rating you have on your gear is wasted stats. Now for raids you will need as little as 236(requires a Draenei in your raid, Misery or Improved Faerie Fire and 3/3 Balance of Power) to as much as 341(3/3 Balance of Power only). For more information pertaining to the mechanics of raiding as a Balance Druid read Wisprunner's guide:Raiding Basics@80:Moonkin Druid, it's stickied at the top of the forum index here. All we need to know for this guide is that you need a little hit rating if you're doing Heroics, you need a lot more if you're stepping into Naxx. As such I will offer at least one item with +hit rating and one that focuses on other stats such as spell power, +critical strike rating, and +haste if there are two available options for that specific slot.

Just an example of what I mean, I am pretty sure you are either overvaluing the int/spirit and socket on Teleportation or undervaluing the crit/haste on Iceshard boots, but either way, the Iceshard boots are clearly the superior choice.

That criticism aside, this is a very good guide for a fresh 80 moonkin, and sticky-worthy.

Good point Badegg - the main problem is really a mathematical one: the dps stats of those items + the 15% spirit to spellpower IMF conversion leads to higher dps (again based on hypothetical spreadsheets like Adoriele's which I'm definitely not qualified to judge) than the stats + the crit on the other items. I'd prefer to focus on crit too (heh who doesn't like those big flashy #s XD) but I decided to keep the list as objective as possible - i'm actually thinking that the 0.55 weighting of crit is too low in an Eclipse rotation just give then dps loss when the CD is up and you aren't getting a proc.

Just going back over that one comparison - the Int and Spirit on Teleportation give you an additional 13 spell power and ~0.4% crit. If you put in a rare haste/SP gem for the socket bonus you get another 14 spellpower and 8 haste rating.

The crit rating on Silky Iceshard Boots give 0.81% crit, so the tradeoff is 26 spellpower versus .41% crit (around 20 crit rating) and 21 haste rating.

Whether 20 CR and 21 HR is better or worse than 26 SP at heroic level gear is pretty much personal preference, although if you are in fresh quest gear and/or 70 epics the fact that the Teleportation boots have Intellect and Spirit might make them the better choice to get your mana pool up to snuff. After that though I would say Silky are probably the better choice (though admittedly not by as much as I thought). Also if you need hit rating then a 16 hit gem in Teleportation would be a decent option.

Hopefully people should understand anyway that the rankings will change slightly as your gear improves, as that should always be understood. In any event you have done a great service for many moonchickens in putting this all together in one place.
