Q u o t e:

that's why it's called a bug... if you read the spell damage, i notice it doesn't increase spell healing. it actually increases each school individually.

maybe FFB is benefiting from both the fire and the frost damage on mind mastery, so it's double dipping. in beta frostfirebolt was double dipping from all kinds of stuff if you remember.

there must be some bug somewhere otherwise the numbers wouldn't be so off.

This pretty much locks it down. It would be logical to assume that mastery would just bump your overall spellpower but as indicated, it buffs it by school. It's pretty reasonable to assume that frostfire would potentially double dip from that, same as the issue with elemental mastery.

Q u o t e:

what level are you? are you really using the max rank of frostfirebolt for this test, or are you using rank 1?

722-838 is the tooltip on the lvl 80 version of frostfirebolt. If you're actually using the lower ranked frostfirebolt, that would explain why your numbers are off from mine.

Good catch. See, everyone's data can be tainted ;) Reparsing for the correct rank:

Q u o t e:
Coefficient calculation for Frostfire Bolt

Tooltip Min: 629
Tooltip Max: 731
Plus Damage: 921

Datapoints: 126
Min Observed: 1534
Max Observed: 1638
Expected Spread: (731 - 629) * 1.02 = 104.04
Observed Spread: 1638 - 1534 = 104

Coefficient Formula: (Observed Value / 1.02 - Base Value) / Plus Damage
Coefficient by Min: (1534 / 1.02 - 629) / 921 = 0.949969129888655
Coefficient by Max: (1638 / 1.02 - 731) / 921 = 0.94992655042473

Proposed Formula: (3 / 3.5) = 0.857142857142857
Delta from Min Coefficient: abs(0.949969129888655 - 0.857142857142857) = 0.0928262727457977
Delta from Max Coefficient: abs(0.94992655042473 - 0.857142857142857) = 0.092783693281873

Time to repeat isolating out spellfire (yeah, I know, hush). Back in a few.

Edit:

So here is a parse using the tooltip spell power:

Q u o t e:
Coefficient calculation for Frostfire Bolt

Tooltip Min: 629
Tooltip Max: 731
Plus Damage: 843

Datapoints: 44
Min Observed: 1439
Max Observed: 1541
Expected Spread: (731 - 629) * 1.02 = 104.04
Observed Spread: 1541 - 1439 = 102

Coefficient Formula: (Observed Value / 1.02 - Base Value) / Plus Damage
Coefficient by Min: (1439 / 1.02 - 629) / 843 = 0.927383527550997
Coefficient by Max: (1541 / 1.02 - 731) / 843 = 0.92501104831019

Proposed Formula: (3 / 3.5) = 0.857142857142857
Delta from Min Coefficient: abs(0.927383527550997 - 0.857142857142857) = 0.0702406704081395
Delta from Max Coefficient: abs(0.92501104831019 - 0.857142857142857) = 0.0678681911673329

Or, if we assume MM is giving double benefit, an extra 424 * 0.15 = 63.6 spell power gets applied:

Q u o t e:
Coefficient calculation for Frostfire Bolt

Tooltip Min: 629
Tooltip Max: 731
Plus Damage: 906.6

Datapoints: 47
Min Observed: 1439
Max Observed: 1541
Expected Spread: (731 - 629) * 1.02 = 104.04
Observed Spread: 1541 - 1439 = 102

Coefficient Formula: (Observed Value / 1.02 - Base Value) / Plus Damage
Coefficient by Min: (1439 / 1.02 - 629) / 906.6 = 0.862325517014659
Coefficient by Max: (1541 / 1.02 - 731) / 906.6 = 0.860119472452559

Proposed Formula: (3 / 3.5) = 0.857142857142857
Delta from Min Coefficient: abs(0.862325517014659 - 0.857142857142857) = 0.00518265987180222
Delta from Max Coefficient: abs(0.860119472452559 - 0.857142857142857) = 0.00297661530970206

I stand corrected. And the FFB FAQ will be updated accordingly.

while you're there, test it again without mind mastery. just to be 100% sure. i'd do it myself but i have no gold or character on the test server. lol.

MM definitely appears to be doubling up. Good catch. I like being shown I did something wrong, it means someone else is paying attention to the details.

frostfire does damage based on the resistance of the mob...higher frost it does fire...higher fire it does frost...likely the mob tested had higher frost res...so its doing fire which will do a lil more damage...

If you're going to necro a thread, you should probably not be intensely wrong in the necro post.

I can answer this question. It is definitely because Frostbolt has a lower spell power coefficient than Frostfire Bolt. On another thread I read about a week ago, however, this seems to have been stealth fixed on the PTR. Frostbolt and Frostfirebolt should now have the same coefficient in 3.2, and do almost exactly the same damage assuming they are unmodified by talents.
