Q u o t e: One of the reasons I haven't replaced most of my gear is that the socketed gems are making it better than all the crafted/quest/dropped items in the games early areas.
I figure I MIGHT be able to replace some stuff when I hit 73, but it's still up in the air at this point.
I just dinged 80 last night and have STILL not replaced my purple 70 pvp gear... with the gems i have in them they are still better than any quest rewards i've gotten :( As a Miner/JC i HAVE gotten gems to drop just from mining but not very many, so yes u do have to prospect ALOT of ore to get gems. That being said i have TONS of gems stockpiled now because hardly anyone is buying them :( I've seen a few quest rewards with sockets but most were cloth items and honestly the stuff that i've seen crafted with or without sockets seems to be better then most quest rewards :P Also i am loving the new BS "belt buckles" :D its nice to finally add something to your belt since there were already things to add to almost every other piece of gear!

Q u o t e: I think the first (non instance) socketed piece I saw was around L77. There pretty much aren't any in the early zones, but they do start to appear later.
Blizzard knows that every socket is twice as valuable as it was in TBC, so I would expect the socketed gear to be more uncommon as a result.
That's kinda my point. Level 70 gear (with the right Northrend gems) can trump a good deal of Northrend items until WAY later (lvl 78-80). Not the way I expected it to be.

Q u o t e: do to set bonuses and gems it is hard for me to switch out gear. i never thought my gear would last this long
Yeah, I had an early-Kara pair of pants in my locker that rated out as considerably better than the 100-badge Sunwell smith pants when socketed with the Wrath gems.
Item Level 115 pants clearly better than L138 Badge pants...Blizzard knows the new gems screwed up their intended itemization steps quite a bit.

Gems drop just fine from mining, i've gotten probably about 15 or so.

Q u o t e: As I'm venturing around Northrend, collecting gear, and completing quests, I find my self asking: "Where are the sockets?"
I don't think I've found a single quest item/random drop that has sockets on it. Am I alone in this? Does it get better closer to 80? I have meta gems that are inactive because as I replace my gear, the new gear has no sockets.
Are jewelcrafters feeling this as well?
Generally speaking it felt weird to have an item at a leveling up phase that had sockets in it so you'd be trying to get the gems and the cuts you wanted, get them in, then have it replaced one level later. You will start seeing the socketed items the higher level items after reaching level 80 so after getting the gems and cuts you have a better chance at hanging on to the item for awhile so that it means something.

Perfect point. Case closed. As I'm not a JC, I'd rather not spend the money on gems to replace. Thanks Bornakk!

^ This.
I thought the same thing while leveling but rest assured, pretty much all gear you'd expect to have sockets does at 80.

there are def socketable items later on in your levelling. maybe its blizzards way of saving you from socketing your gear while levelling? it would be a waste

As a Jewelcrafter, I'm a little surprised by this response.
What else are we supposed to do with the gems that we level on? Vendor them? I'd think they would be useful for people to use on items that they are getting while they level. Something to perk up their stats with. Instead they should wait until they get their socketed purples and we grind through our greens and blues to offer something worth-while later?

Yes, I always felt that the socketed leveling gear was there so that you'd have a use for all of those lowbie cheap green gems that the jcs made tons of while leveling their craft. I always used the green quality gems in my leveling gear and only switched to the higher quality gems on items I felt I would be keeping longer.
