I put this together for my guild's website, figured I'd throw it up here as well....

GRID

I’m a big time GRID proponent, it is in my opinion the cleanest raid unit frame, and when configured properly it presents a ton of information which is pertinent to the class and role you are playing. This is an ACE mod and can be found at www.wowace.com , on the left hand side of the site click on "zips" and scroll down till you find grid and all the little grid addons. http://files.wowace.com/

What is it?

Grid is a unit frame add-on that presents information in a small box format with specific configurable indicators in 12 places (if you get the sideindicator mod too)for each unit. Each indicator is fully customizable depending on what information you want to see, which means this is not just for Healers, but can be used by any class. I’m going to go over a number of the options available and give my recommendations, but keep in mind this is from a healer perspective so play around with it and learn how to configure GRID to show what is important to you.

http://forestoffeelings.net/gallery/albums/userpics/10025/fulllayout.gif

Basic Options
The Grid options menu is navigated from the mini-map icon as a nested table, this is perhaps the most confusing thing about Grid (I would prefer an options console, but oh well), just mess around with all the different bells and whistles and you’ll eventually get to know where all the options are and how to use them. I recommend going into AV when you are configuring grid, primarily because you will want to be in a raid size group to make your adjustments, and you get free honor while doing so. One important thing to know is you will have to manually adjust the raid size depending on if you are in a 10, 25 or 40 man raid group. You can also set Grid to show only when grouped, in raids or always.

http://forestoffeelings.net/gallery/albums/userpics/10025/framelayoutagr.gif

Orientation
The grid box itself acts like a health bar and will show decreasing health in a top-down (vertical) as well as right-left (horizontal - much like any HP bar) format. I recommend a horizontal format as it will be more in line with what you are used to. You can adjust the height and width of the box as well, so if you don’t like the square format just adjust the height and width until your satisfied.

Center Text
There are two different Center Text options. I recommend the first being character name, you can specify how many letters of the characters name to show. Center Text 2 I have set to show HP deficit which is necessary for me as a healer; however, you can configure it to show a number of options that may better fit your class and role. The center text font size is also adjustable in the options section of the menu.

Box Color
You’ll notice that the grid units are different color boxes; I have it set to match the class color, which I strongly recommend. No matter what class you play its nice to be able to see instantly by color which class each grid-box is. Again though, you can set it to be a single color if you wish.

Frame Opacity
As a healer I need to know quickly who is in or out of range, so I configured my frame aplha to oor, and then set my oor color to 25% opacity. When you select the color the standard color picker box will pop up which lets you set both the color and opacity level. Once again, you can configure the frame alpha to indicate any number of things; OOR makes the most sense in my opinion, but to each their own.

Corner and Side Indicators
This is the meat and potatoes of Grid. The standard Grid mod offers 4 corner indicators; there is an additional grid add-on that gives you indicators in the middle of each side for a total of 8 separate, completely configurable indicators.

Under the grid menu you will find a list of indicators (see above picture), Bottom Left, Bottom Right, Top Right, Top Left, and if you have the additional side indicator mod you will also have Right Side, Left Side, Top Side, Bottom Side. When you highlight these options in the Grid menu a long list of statuses will appear, including things like Agro, Incoming Heal, Various Spells and Debuffs, etc. This is where you will set your different corner and side indicators. As an example, this is what I currently have mine set to:

Top Left: Agro, PW: Shield
Top Side: My Target
Top Right: My Renew, Missing Shadow Protection Buff
Right Side: Healing Trance
Right Bottom: Low Mana
Bottom Side: Missing PW: Fort Buff, Prayer of Mending
Bottom Left: Incoming Heal
Left Side: Clearcasting, Unstable Affliction

So at any given time I can see who has agro, who has PW: Shield on them, where my and other Priests Prayer of Mending spell is, who is less than 25% mana, if someone has UA on them, who has incoming heals (only shows other healers incoming heals if they have grid), who is missing buffs, when my Healing Trance procs from my Eye of Gruul trinket, when clearcasting procs…..you get the idea. There is also a "border" indicator that will color the border of a Grid box, I dont use it because I find it hard to see, but its an additional indicator you can use if you need it. All in all you have 8 corner/side indicators, 2 center text options, and a border indicator for a total of 11. I'll talk about the 12th indicator in the next section.

Now, there is a separate section of the Grid menu that will allow you to make individual adjustments for each buff, debuff, status, etc. You can change the color of the icon, and set a priority from 1-99. For example, I set the priority of Agro to 99 and PW: Shield to 98. Since both of those are set to my Top Right indicator spot by having agro at a higher priority it will always override the PW:Shield. You get the idea?

http://forestoffeelings.net/gallery/albums/userpics/10025/agropriority.gif

Center Icon Debuff Indicator
One of my favorite things about Grid is the center icon. Again, this is as customizable as the rest of grid, I have it set to show only magic and disease debuffs since those are the only two I can remove. When a character gets an effect I can either dispel or cure the actual debuff icon shows up in the center of that toons Grid box. You can adjust the size of the icon to be proportionate as well so it doesn’t take up too much space. Anytime a raid/party member gets an icon in the middle of their Grid box I instantly know they need a dispel/abolish disease. In some fights you’ll know even sooner if you’re really paying attention. Maiden for example, right before she does her Holy Fire the toon she targets gets the agro indicator icon so as soon as I see anyone but the tank with the Top Left Agro indicator I know the Holy Fire is coming, as soon as it hits, the Holy Fire icon shows up in the middle of the box, but I’ve already got them targeted and am dispelling early since I saw the agro indicator….hope that makes sense.

Creating New Debuffs/Buffs
One of the great things about Grid is you can create as many additional buffs/debuffs as you need. The addon comes with a lot of the basic ones, but you’ll want to add quite a few others depending on what your role/class is and what content you are doing. At the bottom of the buff list in the section of the menu where you set your priorities/color/etc, you will see “Add new Buff/Debuff,” and when you mouse over it an empty text box will come up. In the empty box type exactly what the status is you want to create an indicator for. You can create one called “Garrote” if you want to see who Moroes buts a bleed on, you can create one for a trinket (Healing Trance is one I did for my Eye of Gruul Trinket), or any other boss buff/debuff/status changing effect you wish. So as you do new and different content you’ll constantly be adding new status indicators and setting priorities so you can stay on top of the encounter.

Additional Mods
Grid as a few addons that I recommend if you are a healer (I personally dont every one of these, including the manabars one but I may check it out). Again, these can be found by going to the wowace website and clicking on the zip files section on the left and then scrolling down to Grid.

GridstatusHots (adds all the Hots so you don’t have to do so manually)
GridAlert (Alert Announcer)
GridLayoutforHealers (allows some additional layout options)
GridStatusHotStack (allows ability to track stacked hots)
GridStatusHealer (Advises who should be healed) - if you need this one re-roll now
GridStatusLifebloom (tracks Lifebloom stacks)
Gridmanabars (adds small mana bars to the bottom of the grid box)
GridSideIndicators (not sure of spelling, but it adds the extra indicators)
GridMissingBuffs (allows you to add missing buff indicators, great if you’re a raid buffer)

Tandem Mods
I also run with Classic Perl in addition to Grid for the sole reason of having a Target, Target of Target and ToToT unit frame. Although I rarely look at it, I do like to have the target of target functionality which Grid does not have. Grid also lacks pet support, which someone is hopefully working on developing. So having an additional unit frame mod is nice to have for Target and Pet Frames.

Enjoy

Very nice! You should add that to the WoWAce Wiki.

I've been using Grid for so long I can't remember.

And it's in my opinion that you use this mod in conjunction with "Clique," which assigns certain spells to a combination of mouse clicks and modifier keys. For example, my Shift+Right click casts a rank 2 Chain Heal, whereas just my Right Click will cast Healing Wave Rank 7 and so on.

However, excellent guide for beginner users of Grid.

How do i make the little boxes (not the actual people but the ones that show when someone has a renew) smaller? right now they are too big and overlap causing me not to see the health of the raid members

I have my bars set as horizontal, and it rarely actually acts like a Health Bar. It doesn't show deficit, even though I have it enabled.. and it doesn't really say like for instance... A person has half-health and it shows it as a full bar instead of a half bar. What is your guy's setup for making Horizontal Health Bars?

been using grid and clique. been trying to set up a macro that would let me use flash heal with a mouse click as well as activate the use option on my trinkets. Problem I run into is that the macro would only heal me and not the person on grid that i clicked on. Is there any way around this problem or is activating the trinkets through a macro not able to be done?

Make sure the macro has the target=mouseover option as well as the [] after:

/cast [target=mouseover][] Flash Heal

Use mouseover macros, and put them in the custom macros section of Clique. Heres an example of one of my macros:

/use Lower City Prayerbook
/stopcasting
/use Essence of the Martyr
/stopcasting
/cast [target=mouseover] Flash of Light

That last line should be [target=mouseover], not the other way around :)

Also, I would DEFINITELY recommend GridManaBars. Its just amazing. (And pretty much needed for a druid)
