What do you think is the worst designed zone in World of Warcraft and why?

I think Desolace is the worst zone myself. There is 1 graveyard, in the middle away from pretty much every decent quest. There are no decent quests anyway, the only reason to go there is to avoid dealing with the kids in STV.. The zone is very very dull beyond its obvious pointed out flaws.

I kind of liked Desolace, but I think that the amazing mining opportunities there helped. I really actually mostly enjoy it for the theme, the texturing was done really well. It's like this iron enriched wasteland with deep iron rust colored pools, a kodo graveyard with bones all over, some crazy cults, a really engaging struggle between two centaur clans. Cool stuff. I think in general some of the 40 something zones really lack in a singular place with just a ton of quests, you're really almost forced to multi-zone quest. It's a good plan any way, it's always good to jump between zones, but I think it's a bit severe. That's something we recognize though, and Dustwallow Marsh is at the top of the list.

More or less it's not quite about having a well-designed zone, as much as having a large variety of zones.

It allows a more inter-active scene, not to mention it also let's people who like different landscapes to enjoy what they desire.

Personally I hate Blades Edge. But that's just me. As for old zones probably Hinterlands. It's just a big boring grind. I know most quests are kill this and collect that, but Hinterlands loads you with like 10 of these quests at once so you're out killing mobs for a couple hours before you need to return. Sort of tiresome.

Also add another Graveyard to Ungoro. Please.

I guess I might as well throw in my two cents. It's really hard to say "worst" because I truly find redeeming qualities in all of them, but I would say Shimmering Flats. I think the textures (while subtle) are done very well, and the race track is awesome, but all in all you grab all the quests, run around in a big circle, and you're done. Efficient, but flat.

No pun intended.

Needs it so badly. Preferably at the volcano.

The main problem I have with Desolace is the mob density and level range. You'll be wandering among level 33 mobs and suddenly a level 40 thunder lizard is frying you.

some of my best days were spent in desolace- some of my greatest pvp battles i had in that zone, and shaped me in to becoming the hardened warrior i am today

/flex

on the subject of worst designed zones? i really did not enjoy alterac valley at all- mainly because i spent hardly any time there due to the utter lack of quests. stonard, blasted lands, and burning steppes also come to mind as poorly designed zones

By the way, what in heaven's name are you doing up this late? Isn't this Timbal's hunting time? All good trees need their sleep, but big signs that say "BLIZZARD" probably don't get too tired, as far as I would know.

I need to borrow you >=(

And yes, odd that Drysc is around.

My favorite quest in desolace is the one where you earn reputation with the man horses or whatever theyre called. you pick the faction you like and go kill the other guy. i did this quest back in the day (2004, first char after release) with some friends. we must have spent hours on that quest. it went on and on, a huge chain. at one point you have to setup a target dummy and lay a trap etc. I thought "man, this quest is epic, it's been hard so far but i bet it will lead up to something sweet"

nope, it just kinda tapered off with some crap green reward with spirit.

probably half finished content from the beta days when spirit was good and that questline was supposed to mean something.

in the time we wasted on that we probably could have gotten a full level in a real zone doing real quest.

so yeah i would say desolace.

Well then uh, that's good to know! I don't exactly keep up with these things. All I know is I hate getting ganked on the far end opposite of the graveyard. :{

Shimmering flats isnt a zone though. 1000 needles is, and its a bit bigger than the flats >_>
