A lot of players have written or found nice articles on hardware, optimization and tweaks that benefits a lot of users. Unfortunately with the nature of the World of Warcraft forums, they get pushed down to oblivion. I'll try to create this thread for users to contribute to.

Rules:

  • Post your tips/suggestions/news here and I'll try to manage a little index and links to it.
  • Don't post questions in here or "it doesn't work". <-- IMPORTANT. I WILL DELETE YOUR STUFF IF YOU POST THESE HERE
  • Try not to post error logs and such in here.
  • Don't ask for troubleshooting in this thread. Make a new one if you have problems.
  • If you added something and I didn't notice it or have a dispute, send an email to forumtech@blizzard.com. Title it as "ATTN: DatTH" with a link to this thread.
  • You may post to reserve a space if you wish.
  • You may see that your post was edited by me. I'm just doing that to get a clickable link to your post or to help out with the spacing.
  • If you post about a current problem, it may be deleted when it is fixed :)

Well, if your comp specs are above what the game asks for. Their should be no problems with fps, but if you want a higher fps

-Go to your Video card settings outside of WoW in this case you have Nvidia so you can right click the desktop and go to the Nvidia control panel or if you don't have that option you can right click your desktop and go to properties->settings->advanced. NOW HERE IS THE IMPORTANT PART

-turn OFF vertical sync OR vsync this will alow your computer to exceed 60 fps

-turn OFF anisotropic filtering

-turn OFF antialiasing (on this setting if you have up to date drivers it would be set to none)

-turn texture filtering to high performance but you dont really have to since now graphic cards are so powerful it doesent really matter i think you can simply just turn off vsync and go from their

-next go to your video options IN GAME and turn OFF vsync

I hope that helped you if anyone needs more help pm me, thanks!

Here are some links to utilities that I find useful when trying to troubleshoot WoW issues. Some I found myself but most were used by other people in the forum. My thanks to them.

CPU-Z - A nice little program that will give you information on your processor, motherboard and memory. It's good to use when trying to find what motherboard you have when trying to update chipset drivers. You can also use it to check for memory mis-matches.
LINK: http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

HWMonitor - Great for checking the temperature of your CPU and GPU among other things. Shutdowns and frame rate slowdowns can often be caused by over heating components.
LINK: http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php

PC Wizard 2008 - A favorite of mine. It will tell you all about the hardware in your PC. it is particularly useful when it comes to identifying graphics cards. Unlike some other hardware inspection programs, it will tell you what graphics hardware you have even if the drivers are not installed. Useful for those "Display adapter not found" errors.
LINK: http://www.cpuid.com/pcwizard.php

GPU-Z - An utility that tells you a lot about your graphics card. It's main use, for me anyway, in WoW troubleshooting is to check the speed that your PCI-e bus is running at. Poor graphics performance can sometimes be traced to the PCI-e bus running at only x1, not x16.
LINK: http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/

Throttlewatch - Will tell you if your CPU (processor) is running at a reduced speed. Laptops in particular can cut the CPU speed to prevent overheating or to save power. This can cause performance decreases in WoW as well as other programs.
LINK: http://www.panopsys.com/Downloads.html

Process Explorer - Gives you a lot of information about the processes running on your PC. It's useful if you are seeing high or fluctuating CPU usage. You can click on each process and se a grph of it's CPU usage over time as well as other useful information.
LINK: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx

That's it for now. I'm sure I'll think of more later. Please feel free to tidy this post.

Here are some informational web links that may be of interest.

Laptop Graphics Performance - Information on desktop graphics cards is fairly easy to come by. Laptops are another matter. This site has performance benchmarks on pretty much every mobile graphics chipset. Even if the numbers don't mean much to you, the rankings should help in assessing a laptops graphics capabilities.
LINK: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

The Best Graphics Card - Toms Hardware, a well known computer hardware site, posts a list of the "Best Cards for the money" each month. As a guide, it's worth a look, although the posters here are always happy to chip in with advice. Note that this list changes each month. The link here is for October 2008.
LINK: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/Best-Graphics-Card,2033.html

How to Update Your Motherboard Chipset Drivers - This is nice guide to something a lot of people overlook. The Playtool site has a lot of other useful content too.

Figured these tips were worth posting, so here they are, :)

I had a really nasty keylogger bout 2 weeks ago, and was particularly hard to get rid of...

McAfee didn't find it, Norton didn't find it, AVG didn't find it, but...

Spybot did. And after spybot got rid of it, i :

1. Upped my firewall security.
2. Defragged my computer.
3. Downloaded CCleaner-Awesome program, cleans your registry up
4. Downloaded TCP Optimizer- Made my in game latency drop from 2000 to 400 (i know some may say 400 still sucks, but when you live in such a rural area that dial up is unavailable, att laptop connect card internet is the best you get. 400 is playable for me lol)
5. Made sure i had all of the windows security updates.
6. got firefox
7. Ordered a blizz authenticator (you may not think that wow is that important to protect, but when you pay your subscription with your bank debit card, you definatley dont want anyone to have that information. wow gold being stolen is one thing, real life "gold" is another.)

If you are looking for a good place to get this stuff at, try www.100-downloads.com.. they list it all, plus a bunch of other awesome software, and its all free downloads.

^_^

During "Election Season", blizz should keep Area 52 open on Tuesday Maintenance, and have nothing on the servers but virtual polling booths, so wow players that are too fat to walk can still vote.

Outdated video/southbridge drivers can be the cause of many in game problems for laptop users. In many many cases a person may think they have the most recent drivers because they have downloaded the most recent drivers from Gateway's support site for example. In reality these drivers are sometimes way out of date for the simple reason that ATI and NVIDIA do not develop drivers for their laptop model cards as much as they should, if at all.

Symptoms of outdated video/southbridge drivers include:

Crashes
I have had my Gateway blue screen and restart mid game a few times because of outdated video drivers. It is not uncommon.

Corrupted graphics.
Many will see miscolored textures, missing textures, screen distortions in the middle of their screen.

Missing FPS.
I see this a lot. People posting things like "When I bought this laptop I got 60fps average and now it is 15 if I am lucky". Usually they post a dxdiag dump and generally people come up with "your system has crap hardware, go buy a new one". A trend I do see though is a good majority of these people claim to have updated drivers, but the version they are running according to dxdiag is very old.

Fortunately there is a solution. DH mod tool will modify desktop versions of video/chipset drivers to work on notebook computers. Although this is not supported by computer manufacturers or video card manufacturers, it has kept me from having to replace my computer several times.

There are 2 versions of the tool.

ATI
http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool.php

NVIDIA
http://www.driverheaven.net/nvmodtool.php

I recommend getting the drivers themselves from
http://www.driverheavendownloads.net/
This is simply to save you from confusion.

As far as the omega drivers on this site, I have not tested them myself so I dont know much about them.

I hope all this helps someone, best of luck.

Edit: One thing of note for ATI users is to turn off Catalyst A.I. once your new drivers and Catalyst control center are installed. This eats FPS in a bad way for some reason.

This is the fix I figured out and this works with those running Norton 360 2.0 and Norton Internet Security 2009.

Since Wow 3.03 I was having the login , characters unknown then drop out to login screen bug.
It is not your wireless adapter as was suggested by Some gms or tech support individuals.

It has to do with the fact that the Wow executable was changed with patch 3.03.
Norton's firewall doesn't recognize wow now. So what you have to do is this.

Go to your norton icon on the taskbar. double click it.
Select the settings option for internet. click that.
on the next window go to the bottom of the page and select advanced settings and click configure it.
Next page third option down is Firewall Reset.
Select that.
IT will say Are you sure and of course you say yes.

Now reboot your pc.
When it first comes back up Norton will begin to ask you to ok apps that want to get on the net and you will say yes.

Then After all your normal apps stop that prompting. Go ahead and fire up Wow.
Norton will popup and ask you will say Yes 2 times. First time for the Wow launcher second time for wow .exe itself.

AFter that your problems should vanish and all will be good again.

IF you are not running norton security 2009 and you have a valid subscription for 2008. My advice is
please go ahead and download and install 2009 IS because its a Free update for you its vastly superior to Nis 2008 its faster at scanning its faster at uploading and it uses far less resources then NIS 2008 does.

Fix Warriors.

If your computer meets or exceeds the recommended specs and you don't feel like you're getting the performance that you should be, your processor timings may be the causation. As strange as this sounds, opening Windows Media Player (or other players, such as QuickTime for Mac) may fix the issue.

Opening one of these programs universally changes the processor timing, thus making an impact on performance. This will not, however, always boost your frame rate and decrease your loading times. If your processor is not your bottleneck or if the timings already work well, then little to no performance boost will be seen.
