Q u o t e:

Actually, I agree with Vevictus. Taunt at the beginning of a multi-target pull, especially in a place like Shattered Halls, was something I nearly always did. I would do it on an off-target I hadn't built Threat on right before jumping to Battle Stance to Thunderclap (at the time it wasn't usable in Defensive). It was a quick way of buying a couple seconds.

But, either way, it's very rare to use Taunt for the debuff. I tried to be careful with the wording in the guide to avoid saying not to use it if it's on you, but rather to clarify it doesn't modify Threat.

Yea, I think he confused what I was saying...

It's always a good thing to use taunt at the beginning of a multi target pull. It'll at least put the mob on you and let you control a second mob reliably. I was only talking about single target tanking in the first place. The tanks that taunt because they think they're building aggro with it. That's what I think should be bold... lately I've encountered more and more of those...druids/warriors included.

Once again, good guide.

I'm of the opinion that the current point #10 under 'Goals to achieve by 60':

"10) Do you have an add-on to save and quickly swap between gear sets for grinding, tanking, PvP, etc? Do you have an add-on or macro which allows you to switch from 2H to 1H+Shield to DW "on the fly"? -- Armstrong "

Doesn't belong in the list. If you go back to review that list, it's a set of priorities like keeping up Battle Shout and having a set of gear for both tanking and DPS work. It's a very very basic list of goals for Warriors to achieve by 60. The quoted point above simply isn't necessary at any level of play. It's nice and convenient maybe, and might be good to add to a list of cool add-ons to get, but it doesn't match with the others.

This is a good point.

What may make sense is to turn the final post into a compilation of tips from other Warriors, where this kind of thing would fall in place nicely. :)

I guess in the end it's up to Cider whether it belongs in that particular list or not. :)

I have to stongly disagree however with the statement that "The quoted point above simply isn't necessary at any level of play".

Obviously some people will have less of a need for it than others, but there are many situations, both in and out of end-game raiding, where being able to switch every single piece of gear quickly and often will be at the very least a big time-saver. But more importantly, in many cases just being able to quickly switch from DW to 1H & shield mid-fight to pickup an unexpected add will be the difference between a group wipe and a skillful recovery.

It may not be something as basic as keeping shouts up, but it's certainly a concept any warrior should be familiar with by the time they hit level 60, particularly if they ever intend on playing with others and want to be seen as an efficient and skilled player by the time they hit 70 (who doesn't?).

Q u o t e:

Taunt has two components:
1 - Gives the Warrior aggro (and matched threat to the previous target).
2 - Forces the mob to attack the Warrior for the duration of the debuff.

There are situations where Taunt can be used exclusively to perform the latter. ;)

Ability tooltips are often inaccurate or over-simplified. Taunt in most situations will have no noticeable effect if the target is already attacking you. In some cases however, it actually can be used pre-emptively to keep your target focused on you a little longer when you know or suspect it will otherwise de-aggro in the next few seconds.

Nice guide as usual Cider. :)

Rolling a cow is the only way to go. :) High stam and warstomp are ftw! Especially after the changes to weapon skill humans are not nearly so OP.

As far as the taunt thing goes it can be very helpful to use it for the debuff on multi-target pulls. Also good on mobs that charge/aggro dump if you can time it right. (gruul trash comes to mind)

BLESS YOU! BLESS YOU! BLESS YOU!

I have been pulling my hair out trying to find a faq for warriors that wasn't all about tanking or how to play end game raids. This is my first melee class and I'm having a hell of a time learning how to adjust.

This needs to be stickied ASAP.

Thank you again.

Hawt guide, think I've got something for ya though.

During the quest you do to get Berzerker Stance on Flay Island use Demoralizing Shout on enemies. Not sure if it works on all of them, but I can remember getting low on health and trying it just to do anything to save my ass. Turns out, it works kinda like a fear! You'll see an emote along the lines of ;

[Mob Name] becomes demoralized and begins running!

It can be done over and over again, and the mob will run as long as you keep the Demoralizing Shout debuff on the mob.

Not a dreadfully hard event, but it should help out the horribly undergeared. =D

Cheers, and I'm sure the sticky is on its way.

This is indeed true, did the quest a couple of days ago. For more details on the Zerk Stance quest:

1) The quest begins at your trainer. It sends you to Fray Island to the southeast of Ratchet.

2) To get there:

If you're a Hordie, go to Orgrimmar and fly to Ratchet. If you've never been, simply run south along the river, once you get to the ocean make a right and you'll see it.

If you're Alliance, it's a bit trickier. First step is going to Menethil Harbor. If you go to Auberdine, you won't find any higher-level mobs, but it's a long run from Darkshore through Ashenvale to the Barrens -- Ratchet is directly east of Crossroads, which you can't miss. If you go to Theramore, you can either follow the road to the Southern Barrens then turn north and follow the mountains to Ratchet, or try your chance at following the Dustwallow Marsh coast to the north. I think there's some nasty Murlocs up there at some point so it might not be feasible. Either way, the mobs are level 38-40, so give them a wide berth.

3) Look for a long, shallow "bridge" in the water leading from the coast to Fray Island. This is located in the area infested by level 13-14 Southsea pirates.

4) Talk to Klannoc Macleod to start the quest. You have 10 minutes to succeed.

5) Buff up (food buffs, pots, etc.) and make sure you have bandages. Step on the metal plate once you're ready. One challenger at a time will attack you. Simply Hamstring and use Demoralizing Shout to scare him away; he will run like a headless chicken for 5-6 seconds after a Demo Shout. Use this to your advantage. You should NOT have any problems killing those guys, there's around 8-10 of them.

6) Big Will spawns after you've killed the required number of challengers. Turn on Retaliation and go to town on him. Not a problem either. Congrats, you now have Berzerker Stance!

1) Move the short description of Threat as the hidden number, etc. (2.3) up to the section on Positioning (1.2.1). This will allow you to use the word Threat throughout the section and will clarify some parts of that section where, for the sake of clarity to beginners, you have used "aggro."

For example, "They are 20% more likely to pull a creature off of you if they are standing within melee range of that creature." is a little misleading. If you have introduced the concept of Threat, you can then say that they build 20% more of it.

Likewise, "but they have hidden attributes which reduce their "aggro" penalty due to their class" is a situation where "threat generation" would be better.

2) I loved the section on the 30-minute cooldowns. I have almost 90 days on this warrior, and that's still something I need to get my darn head around.

3) Under 1.8 (When is Protection Spec a Good Idea?), add the phrase, "When you want to be like Kek of Perenolde, who specced Protection for his guild and has loved it ever since. He is secretly my hero."

4) Great guide. Thank you once again. /reported

List of nice addons to have - Download from...

curse-gaming.com - click the WoW BC portal and search addons.
wow-interface.net
wowace.com <-- compilation.

Major - these change your interface in a major way and sometimes provide additional functionality.

Bar mods - Many out there. They usually change your standard bars provided by blizzard into movable series of buttons that can be then further customized. Simple ones are...

Discord Action Bars
Bongos - the easiest one to configure in my opinion, either it or bartender. Can also alter the minimap and experience bar.
Bartender (version 3)

HUD - Provides a heads up display. Nice to have so you don't have to check your hp/rage by glancing up into the corner of the screen, which is sometimes distracting.

Moog HUD
Don't know others off the top of my head, I think I have IceHud (disabled) and an updated version of Drathals HUD.

Unit frames - nice to have. Change the unit frames, which are the frames with your health and rage/the party's health/mana/etc/the target...etc.

Perl Unit frames
Discord Unit Frames
There are others out there. Feel free to add to the list.

SCT - Scrolling Combat Text. While blizzard have their own version, there is another on curse-gaming and other websites that is more configurable by far and looks far better. Also, there is SCTD, which adds your damage to the sct.

Spell alert - Warns you what your target and people around you are casting. Nice to have, very much so if you are into pvp.

Spell Alert - Yeah, I think it's still around.
Naturs Enemy Cast Bars (commonly known as NECB) - not strictly spell alert, but they show the casting bar of your enemy as their spell cast progresses and also lists the duration of debuffs on your target and your target's major cooldowns (things like intimidating shout, last stand if you saw them use it - that is, it registered in the combat log).

*KTM threat meter - this is an addon that measures threat produced by others and you. There is a different one coming out from the ace developer team (wowace.com) since KTM is a system hog and is no longer being updated. However, it is still in the beta stage. When it does come out, I suggest getting it if you are going to tank a lot. It's a nice tool to measure your threat and the threat of those around you (note:they must have the mod installed as well IIRC). If you are playing with a group of friends, consider getting this.

Not so major

Damage Meters - pretty obvious.

SWstats

Bag mods - some sort, most merge your bags into one large bag (visually).

OneBag
MrPlow - not strictly a bag mod, but it does sort things.
Feel free to add.

ItemRack - Since us warriors have many sets for dps, pvp, and tanking, switching between them in a few clicks or button presses is nice. ItemRack allows you to pre-set those sets and bind them to keys for quick switches.

Buff Bars - change the buff icons.

CTBuffBar
Elkano's Buff Bars
There are more.

Map Mods - Cartographer. On sites such as thottbot.com, people often refer to coordinates of mobs and items. This mod shows your coordinates as well as the coordinates of your cursor on the map, so you can find where to go faster for more efficient questing. It also comes without the fog of war of blizzard's original map - takes some exploration element out of it, so if you 'want to discover things on your own...you probably don't want this mod.

Cooldown counters - not so important for warriors, but provide a larger cooldown countdown either on the ability or in a seperate frame.

As I am lazy, this is not a full list. Feel free to browse curse-gaming.com and wow-interface.net (or is wowinterface.net) by yourself and find your own favorites!

For example, my interface.

For 1.7 A Checklist of Goals by Level 60, I’d recommend suggesting that the new warrior learns the mechanics of aggro, avoidance, and melee damage. The warrior class, in the tanking role especially, needs to have a very good understanding of how threat works, and how the melee hit rules work (both offensively and defensively.)

As a new high-level warrior you need not know every detail of the system perfectly, but you do at least want to have a basic understanding of every piece of melee damage mechanics (incoming and outgoing), and threat mechanics (for all classes). You might not know exactly which classes have aggro reducing moves, but you should know that some classes do. Likewise, you should know a little something about what defense rating, hit rating, and weapon skill rating do (and why you should care about those, in either DPS or tanking roles.)

Later, you should aim to have a full understanding of the melee damage mechanics and the threat mechanics, and in addition a working knowledge of what buffs and debuffs each class can provide to aid you in your work. As DPS, you’re responsible for knowing how to optimize your damage output, and it’s up to you to know to ask for the right buffs to do your job—the paladin almost certainly doesn’t know whether blessing of kings or blessing of might will help you more, so you should. As a tank, your responsibility expands to include the enemy, particularly in boss fights. You’re the one who can most easily see what’s happening to you, and knowing what options are available means you can make more intelligent suggestions for how to change things around.

Past 40 you can really go either Fury or Arms. Pre-40, it's not impossible, but like Protection, it's really not ideal.

However, if -- and this is a big if -- things haven't changed that much since I leveled, it's easier to get good MS gear while leveling. Heck, the ease of getting Ice Barbed Spear alone is an argument for Arms.

But I don't really remember. It's been a long time. Someone else could shed light on this, if I am wrong. :)

This toon is only~ a year and a half old and yeah the main argument for arms is predominantly a lack of + hit gear til outlands (or outdated raid instances) while the biggest requirement for arms is a big nasty 2h which is easily obtained.
