Rods Rogue Cliff Notes:

I don't want to sound like a jerk but, try reading the FAQ at the top of the rogue forums page. Also, my forum buddy Chefassassin has compiled quite the FAQ himself called The Ultimate FAQ found here: http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.aspx?fn=wow-rogue&t=518864&p=1&tmp=1#post518864
There is a lot of valuable information in there about EVERYTHING rogue. You will probably want one build for leveling and then pay 1g at level 60 to change to a PvP build. So without further ado, here is WAY more information than you asked for.

2.1 ABREVIATIONS

The following are abbreviations you should become familiar with as you will see them used throughout this guide, WoW forums and even during game play:

DPS=Damage per Second
CP=Combo Point
SS=Sinister Strike
CS=Cheap Shot
KS=Kidney Shot
BS=Back Stab
SnD=Slice and Dice
EA=Expose Armor
CB=Cold Blood
BF=Blade Flurry
AR=Adrenaline Rush
Hemo=Hemorrhage
Prep=Preparation
Premed=Premeditation
DoT=Damage over Time
Rupt=Rupture
Imp. =refers to getting the improved version of the skill by use of talent points.
Proc=Just read this as Activate as in I put Cripple Poison on my main hand so it will proc more often
AI=Artificial Intelligence, or the computer generated thinking of a creature
Mob=Monster using artificial intelligence to fight.
NPC=Non-Player Character
PvP=Player verses Player
PvE=Player versus Enemy (against NPC Mobs only)
PvM=Player versus Monster (against NPC Mobs only)

2.2 WHAT PROFESSIONS SHOULD I LEARN?

First Aid, Cooking and Fishing should ALL be trained as rogues have no other way to heal.

Gathering Mining, Herbalism, and Skinning

These are great for selling on the Auction House (AH) for money. You may take two but make sure one of them is Skinning because if you have Mining and Herbalism you cannot search for both on your mini-map at the same time. Herbalism is great for rogues to gather Fadeleaf for vanish and Swiftthistle for cooking Thistle Tea. Skinning is good when coupled with leatherworking to provide you own leather. Mining is good for both Blacksmithing and Engineering.

Trade Skills Leatherworking, Alchemy, Engineering, Tailoring, Enchanting, Blacksmithing.

Out of these trade skills there is one you simply SHOULD NOT be choosing; tailoring. You can wear leather so there is no need for cloth and it uses up you cloth you need for bandages. Blacksmithing is a weak choice too for the opposite reason; you cannot use any armor greater than leather so you would only be using it for weapons. Leatherworking at endgame is pretty much useless but great up until then. Enchanting is great as you can farm for weapons as a rogue and disenchant all soulbound items you cannot use but keep in mind that it is a HUGE goldsink early on and requires AH sitting to profit at endgame.. Engineering is the most useful skill because it has all the cool toys that only engineers can use. My personal favorite is alchemy though because if you are buffed up with potions you are able to compete about 2-3 levels higher than not buffed. Alchemy is also great because you will already want to pick up Herbalism to supply yourself with Fadeleaf and Swiftthistle and then you can do something with all those other herbs as well.

Combo choices:

Money: Skinning & Herbalism, Skinning & Mining
Self-Sustaining: Herbalism & Alchemy, Mining & Engineering, Mining & Blacksmithing, Skinning & Leatherworking
Usefulness without regards to money or supply: Engineering & Enchanting

2.3 WHAT RACE SHOULD I BE?

ALLIANCE

Night Elves - Shadowmeld is on a separate timer than stealth and gives you a passive +5 bonus to stealth. 305 possible at Level 60 (makes it effectively like a level 61)
Humans - Perception to find other stealthed rogues, druids, invisible warlock summons or hunter pets.
+5 to Maces & Swords. 305 possible at Level 60 (makes it effectively like a level 61)
Dwarves - Stoneskin clears DoTs, great for a rogue looking to restealth.
Gnomes - Escape Artist clears binds so you can close to melee distance where youre effective.

HORDE

Undead - Will of the Forsaken (WotF) clears fear and charm effects, great against casters. Cannibalize is good for a non-healing class.
Orcs - 25% Passive resistance to stuns. When youre stunned you cant do DPS or your stuns.
Trolls - Beserking is great for Combat specced rogues.
Tauren - HA! I dont think so. Your prey would hear that cowbell around your neck a mile away. Moooo!

Keep in mind that even though Night Elves and Undead may look very appealing, you will pick the same race as 95% of other rogues. If you want to be different, choose Troll or Dwarf.

2.4 WHAT BUILD SHOULD I USE?

First, get to know The Three Talent Trees and each talent is. It might help to use a talent calculator.
This is my favorite: http://wowvault.ign.com/View.php?view=Talents.View&category_select_id=7
Or Blizzards own: http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/rogues/talents.html

Assassination - Burst or Frontloaded Damage, Critical Hit Increases and Poison Improvements.
Combat - Sustained Damage and Passive Bonuses and improvements to Open Melee Fighting.
Subtlety - Stealth Improvements, DoTs and Energy Conservation.

Most builds try to utilize two of the three major 21pt talents: Cold Blood, Blade Flurry and Preparation. Other builds try to incorporate a 31pt Talent: Vigor, Adrenaline Rush or Premeditation. With the 31pt talent, be sure to pick up the 21pt talent in that tree as well but be forewarned that grabbing a 31pt talent will limit your flexability and customizability of choosing your talents as they we mostly be in one talent tree. The builds below are fairly common and keep in mind there are variants for all of them and as long as you keep the key talents, are fully customizable. The talent trees are separated with a "/" to read as Assassination/Combat/Subtlety

-Leveling/Grinding Builds: 30/8/13, 20/31/0 and 30/21/0
-PvP Builds: 30/8/13, 21/8/22 aka "the cookie cutter build"
-Stunlocking Builds: 31/2/18, 31/8/12, 21/8/22, 21/3/27
-DoT Build: 25/0/26
-Dodge Build: 0/17/34
-Combat (Swords/Maces) Build: 20/31/0, 21/30/0
-Seal Fate/Combat (Dagger) Build: 30/21/0, 31/8/12

Lets take a look at two of the most popular builds, shall we?

(A)THE COOKIE CUTTER BUILD 21/8/22
Consists of Cold Blood 1/1, Improved Backstab 3/3 and Preparation 1/1 and whatever else you want to fill in the spaces.

Assassination Talents (21 points)
Improved Eviscerate - 3/3 points
Malice - 5/5 points
Murder - 2/2 points
Ruthlessness - 3/3 points
Lethality - 5/5 points
Relentless Strikes - 1/1 point
Improved Instant Poison - 1/5 point (You may put this point anywhere in the assassination tree)
Cold Blood - 1/1 point

Combat Talents (8 points)
Improved Sinister Strike - 2/2 points
Improved Gouge - 3/3 points
Improved Backstab - 3/3 points

Subtlety Talents (22 points)
Rapid Concealment or Master of Deception or Camouflage - 5/5 points
Opportunity - 5/5 points
Improved Ambush - 3/3 points
*** Initiative - 4/5 points (May substitute with Rapid Concealment or Master of Deception or Camouflage 4/5 or anything else you wish)
*** Improved Rupture - 3/3 points (May substitute with Imp. Sap 3/3 or anything else you wish)
Preparation - 1/1 poi

2.5 WHAT WEAPONS AND WHY?

Ill start with a disclaimer. All the below comments are given without regard to stats, special attacks or procs. The reason being is that these seriously complicate the issue of which weapon is better than the next. Also, there is a lot of room for preference. Lets just keep it simple for now.

-MAIN HAND-

Daggers are required for Backstab and Ambush and in order to get the most damage from these moves, you should use the HIGHEST DAMAGE RANGE DAGGER WITH THE ABSOLUTE SLOWEST WEAPON SPEED YOU CAN FIND.

Swords/Maces are more effective if using a combat build. Since these weapons do not have an option to Backstab or Ambush your main attack will be Sinister Strike. The same rule applies for these weapons as for daggers. THE BEST WAY TO GET A HIGH DAMAGING SINISTER STRIKE IS TO GET THE HIGHEST DAMAGE RANGE WEAPON WITH THE ABSOLUTE SLOWEST WEAPON SPEED YOU CAN FIND.

Main Hand: (in order of priority)
1) Weapon Speed - SLOW
2) High Damage Range
3) DPS

-OFFHAND-

Off-Hand, regardless of weapon choice you will want the FASTEST weapon you can find as it will excel mostly at using poisons because the off-hand weapon damage is cut in half and has a higher chance of missing than your main hand. (Even with talents its still reduced by 25% and have the same chance to miss) Also, its important to know that your off-hand is not even considered in any of rogues special abilities. It basically just keeps swinging at a constant rate while fighting melee. The only special abilities that help an off-hand are ones that increase your attack rate, like Blade Flurry or Slice and Dice.

Off-Hand:
1) Weapon Speed - FAST (The importance of this depends heavily when poison is applied)
2) DPS
3) High Damage Range

2.6 WEAPON SWITCHING

Regardless of what weapon choice and build you are using, it would be in your best interest to get a weapon switching macro to switch to a dagger main hand for Backstabs and Ambushes and to a Sword or Mace main hand to boost your Sinister Strike. You could use a good weapon switch macro from www.curse-gaming.com and while you are there, pick you Rogue Helper, Stun Watcher, and Energy Watcher from their site as well.

2.7 WHAT TALENTS FIRST?
-No matter what build you use, GET IMPROVED SINISTER STRIKE FIRST. Let me also say that for grinding I think Remorseless Attacks is the best talent as it gives you a 40% opportunity to Critical that next Ambush leaving your same level mob with around 60% of his health. Once fully specced with malice and Imp. Ambush that could bring it up to over 100%. Thats like a free CB for 20 sec after every kill from a green or higher mob.

2.8 WHAT IS STUNLOCK?

-Stunlock is using your stuns and disorients (even including Blind and Vanish) to keep a mob or Char from being able to move. In PvP it is affected by diminishing returns. It is commonly accepted that in order to achieve a true stunlock you will need either Vigor in the Assassination Tree or at least 1 out of 2 points in Improved Cheap Shot.

SKILLS: 1 = Opener, 2 = CP builder, 3 = Finisher

Stuns/Disorients
(1) CS (2) Gouge (3) KS

DoTs
(1) Garrote (2) Hemo (A de-buff; not a true DoT) (3) Rupt

Instant
(1) BS & Ambush (2) SS & BS (3) Evis

Others
(3) EA/SnD

2.9 WHAT ARE SOME COMBOS I CAN USE?

Which combos you can try to use will depend on whether you have learned the skill, have the right weapon type and which talents you decided to spend talent points on. For instance, I could put a combo on here with hemorridge, cold blood or prep but it wouldnt do any good if your level 15. Im going to just throw down some combos that are not talent dependent but will require the correct weapon type and for you to be high enough in level to actually have the skill. Unless otherwise stated you should assume that you wait until the last possible moment to break gouge and blind to allow for the full energy recover possible. Also for simplicity I will also not be using thistle tea in these combos. BS can be substituted for SS anytime you have the extra energy in PvP or when the PvE Mob is still stunned. Be aware that certain resistances or having a critical move be parried, dodged or missed will require quick thinking to recover from.

Mini-Combos:
1) CS > SS > Gouge > SS > KS
2) Ambush > Gouge > BS > SS > SS > Evis (any finisher)
3) Garrote > SS > SS > SS > SS > Rupt

Stunlock Combo: (PvE or PvP if you have 5/8 Nightslayer set, the Vigor talent or ½ of the Imp. CS talent)
1) CS > SS > Gouge > KS > SS > Gouge > Blind > Vanish > CS > SS > Gouge > KS > SS > SS

Noob Combo: (PvE only)
Dont discount this combo, it has been very effective attacking a mob that normally is beyond you abilities, or when you health is low. The main tactic used is gouging and then running away in the opposite direction long enough for you to jump 3 times while running then turn back around and throwing/shooting at the incoming mob until he closes to melee range. It is a great tactic as you will lower there health with your ranged weapon, regain all your energy and your stuns cooldowns might be done by the time they close. This will be simplified as (Gouge+Pull). Of course, the area must be cleared of other mobs that wont like you running around all over the place.

1) CS > BS > Gouge+Pull > SS > KS > BS > Gouge+Pull > SS > Gouge+Pull > SS > KS
2) Ambush > Gouge+Pull > SS > Gouge+Pull > SS > Evis

Soloing a Boss Combo: (some bosses have special resists against stuns)

Ambush > Gouge+Pull > SS > Gouge+Pull > SS > EA > Gouge+Pull > SS > Gouge+Pull > SS > Gouge+Pull > SnD > SS > SS > SS > SS > SS > Evis

4.0 To-Hit FAQ by Slant

With a 300 weapon skill attacking a mob with a 300 defense (IE level 60) you will miss 5% of the time. With +5 tohit you will never, ever, ever miss. You can be parried/blocked/dodged but you will NEVER miss. As in 0 misses after days of play.

Dualwielding has a hard cap of 19% miss. Thus no matter how much tohit gear you get, you will always miss a minimum of 19%.

If you raid constantly, +6 could be worthwhile as you need +5.6% to hit a level 63 mob 100% of the time.

Assuming a maxed weapon skill to-hit past +6% is absolutely worthless under every circumstance.

(0.04% hitrate per defense * 15 defense for 3 levels = 0.6)

Yes, this means that the precision talent is not optimal with endgame equipment. Yes, you need precision for imp dualwielding. It's a problem.

The Numbers:
- 19% minimum missrate is added when you dualwield. These misses are static and cannot be mitigated through gear or talents.
- 5% missrate against a mob whose defense is equal to your weapon skill
- There is no minimum cap for single-attacking and special attacks (sinister strike, backstab, etc). These attacks can get to a 0% missrate.
- each point of weapon skill is +0.04% to-hit and crit
- I assume that each point of weapon skill is -0.04% to an opponent's dodge/block/parry but I haven't seen solid tests.
- each point of defense is -0.04% to-hit and crit
- each point of defense is +0.04% to dodge, block, parry
- defense does not affect crushing blows from mobs of +3 levels
- you will hit glancing blows against mobs of +3 levels. It isn't clear if weapon skill / mob defense skill affects this. I would assume it does but it has not been adequately tested yet. Crushing/glancing blows don't happen against PCs so it has to be tested against raid mobs.

5.0 Enchant FAQ by Slant

Rogue enchant priorities

Combat rogue mainhand PvE:
crusader >= lifesteal > fiery > +15agil >> +5dam >= +15str >>> unholy = icy

Combat rogue mainhand PvP:
lifesteal >= crusader > fiery > +15agil >> +5dam >= +15str >>> unholy = icy

Dagger rogue mainhand PvE:
+15 agil = crusader >= lifesteal = +5dam >= fiery > 15 str >>> unholy = icy

Dagger rogue mainhand PvP:
+5dam = +15 agil = lifesteal >= crusader = fiery > 15 str >>> unholy = icy

Offhand (all):
+15 agil >= lifesteal >= crusader > fiery > 15 str >>>>> +5dam > unholy = icy

> better than
>> much better than
>> much much better than
>= better than or equal to (very close)
= equal to

Rogues, Instant Attacks and Procs
- Rogues have a real advantage when it comes to mainhand weapon procs. Procs are calculated as procs per minute, however this is internally expressed as a percentage value per attack. This means that when you spam 3 sinister strikes in the beginning of a fight your fiery enchant has a 84% chance to proc with a 2.80 speed weapon.
- Mainhand weapon procs tend to go off roughly 2X as often as their procs per minute would infer for combat rogues.
- Mainhand weapon procs tend to go off roughly 1.5X as often as their procs per minute would infer for dagger rogues.

Crusader
- 75-125 point heal and +100 strength for 15 seconds
- crusader on both weapons dualwielding does stack. Only one icon shows up but you get both heals and your strength goes up by 200.
- crusader is by far the best weapon buff for non-rogues and hunters as they get 2 attack per strength
- rogues get 1 attack per strength, so 100 attack or 7.14dps
- 7.14dps = +7.14dps on mainhand and +3.6 offhand (or +5.36dps offhand with imp dualwielding)
- the 7.14dps also adds to instant attacks. This is calculated by (weaponspeed * 7.14)= damage added to instants
- crusader is a buff so it isn't resistable, thus it is the best mainhand enchant for PvE raids
- crusader has a low procrate and a duration, so it is much less useful in PvP and soloing where it seems to always proc at the end of a fight
- crusader procs at a rate of 1 proc per minute. Thus a 2.80 speed weapon would proc 1/(60/2.80)= 4.67% chance per proc

Lifesteal
- 30 point heal and 30 point fire (NOT shadow) damage per proc
- lifesteal procs at a rate of 6 procs per minute. Thus a 2.80 speed weapon would proc 6/(60/2.80)= 28.00% chance per proc
- lifesteal is better than crusader for PvP and soloing as it is atomic damage and healing
- lifesteal does 3dps and heals 3hps per hand with autoattack alone

Fiery
- 40 point fire damage per proc
- fiery does 4dps with autoattack alone
- fiery procs at a rate of 6 procs per minute. Thus a 2.80 speed weapon would proc 6/(60/2.80)= 28.00% chance per proc

15 agil
- 15 agil = 15 attack = +1.07dps to mainhand and 0.54dps to offhand (0.80dps to offhand with imp dualwield)
- 15 agil = 0.52% crit = 1.03% dodge

15 str
- 15 str = 15 attack = +1.07dps to mainhand and 0.54dps to offhand (0.80dps to offhand with imp dualwield)

5 damage
- adds a flat 5 damage to every attack
- dps added is 5 / (speed of weapon), so on a 2.00 speed weapon like the barman shanker it would add 2.5dps to mainhand only
- useful for mainhand dagger rogues only

Demonslaying
- 75-125 holy damage against demons and a 5 second stun
- don't know procrate
- useful if you're grinding on satyrs, basically

Unholy/Icy
- unholy is worthless and icy has a very low procrate, don't bother

Maelstrom/Heroism Cards
- No real tests have been performed yet for these procs. Hearsay says they are 1 proc per minute per hand. If this is true, they are worthy of being purple.

6.0 Hemorrhage vs Sinister Strike FAQ by Slant

Hemorrhage
- Instant attack that does weapon damage + debuff for 35 energy. Grants 1 combo point.
- Debuff lasts 30 hits or 15 seconds
- Debuff causes all physical damage to be increased by +7
- Note that hemo is one of two player abilities that has this effect. Other is fairly low level alchemist potion. Do they stack? Anyone tested this? http://www.thottbot.com/?i=14541
- Talent is deep in the subtelty tree.
- Fastest nonpositional nonopener combo point generation for stunlocks
- Does not use up cold blood. (this is an advantage)
- Affected by lethality, increases crit hit damage by 30%
- Average hit with 700 attack and a dal'rend's sacred charge mainhand: 256 damage = 7.3 damage/energy for the instant hit alone
- Average hit with 700 attack and a high warlord's sword (best mainhand sword in the game) mainhand: 317.5 damage = 9.07 d/e for the instant hit alone

Sinister Strike
- Instant attack that does weapon damage + 68 for 45 energy. Grants 1 combo point.
- 1st tier talent reduces cost to 40 energy. Almost all rogues have this.
- Affected by lethality, increases crit hit damage by 30%
- Affected by aggression. Increases added damage to 72.
- Average hit with 700 attack and a dal'rend's sacred charge mainhand: 324 damage = 8.1 d/e with imp SS
- Average hit with 700 attack and a dal'rend's sacred charge mainhand: 324 damage = 7.2 d/e without imp SS
- Average hit with 700 attack and a high warlord's sword (best mainhand sword in the game) mainhand: 385.5 damage = 9.64 d/e for the instant hit alone with imp SS
- Average hit with 700 attack and a high warlord's sword (best mainhand sword in the game) mainhand: 385.5 damage = 8.57 d/e for the instant hit alone without imp SS

Conclusions
- Spamming imp SS is more efficient damage/energy than spamming hemo looking at the instant strike damage alone.
- Spamming hemo is more efficient damage/energy than spamming non-improved SS looking at the instant strike damage alone.
- It takes between 3 and 5 hits with +7 damage for a single hemo to outdamage imp sinister strike. The better your weapon, the less hits it takes.
- Since hemo doesn't stack on itself, it simply refreshes, the best possible scenario in single group or small raid play is to hemo once then followup with imp sinister strikes. Unfortunately hemo's location deep in the subtelty tree makes this fairly unlikely.
- In a large 40-man raid situation the hemo debuff's efficiency goes up dramatically. It can do up to 210dps in the best possible situation. More likely is 70-90dps. This has a secondary advantage in that this damage is spread out amongst every physical damage dealer in the raid and not on you alone.
- It is therefore very much worthwhile to have a single rogue spamming hemo per large raid mob, particularly with 16 debuff slots available in 1.7.
- Gift of arthas potion rocks. Anyone use it in raids on high HP mobs on the maintank?
- Hemorrhage and improved sinister strike are roughly equivalent damage dealers with blue level 60 equipment. Hemorrhage's main advantage appears when multiple people are attacking the debuffed target; when including this debuff dama

7.0 The AddOns FAQ(written by me)

AddOns are you friend, they will enhance your gameplay and allow you to customize things the way you want them to look and feel. There are countless UIs out there, some are better than others. A good but not full proof way of determining the quality of a UI is the number of downloads. That denotes popularity, usually stemming from its usefulness.

A good website is http://www.curse-gaming.com/mod.php its one of the most complete sites that I have seen separating mods by Sections. Now there are two ways of getting mods, either you get something pre-packaged, a compilation or get stand alone mods. Compilations have the advantage that everything is working well together, moreover its a complete solution. Its strength is also its weakness, each person is different, you might find that you get too many mods that you have no use for. On the other hand stand alone mods offer you a more customized solution however you might find it a little bit harder to make everything work together nicely (over lapping buttons anyone?)

7.1 Most Popular Compilations (http://www.curse-gaming.com/mod.php?sectid=11&sortby=down&t=desc)
Cosmos - http://www.cosmosui.org/ (people like it apparently, did not seem that great to me)

7.4 Installation

Installing AddOns is a lot easier than one would think.
1. Go to your WoW directory (ex: C:\\Program Files\World of Warcraft)
2. Create a directory called Interface
3. Create a directory called AddOns in the Interface folder
4. Locate downloaded UIs
5. Unzip them in a temporary folder
6. Move the UI folder to C:\\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Interface\AddOns
7. Start WoW, after logging in at the Character Select screen click on the AddOns button to the left.
8. Enable all the UIs you have downloaded, make sure to click on Load anyway for older versions
9. Start the game and enjoy

I suggest unzipping the UIs in a temp folder because depending on the UI they either already have the Interface/AddOns coded in or not making it annoying to have to search your directories to find out if the UI is where its supposed to be at or not.

Also some UIs do not load by themselves you might have to type a /slash command to activate them or modify their options. Go to the page you downloaded the UI from and it will probably mention the command there if not try to name of the UI it will probably work. Finally if you have too many UIs you might have to update the MB allowed for the UI, right now mine is on 56 MB.

Yeah.. did anyone bother to save the other sticky that had the 1.12 builds in it? I didn't realize they were changing the forums, much less not migrating the stickies over.

5.2 Rogue Builds AFTER the 1.12 patch

Original Link:
http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.aspx?fn=wow-rogue&t=1347132&p=1

by Portia

Old School Builds Revisied in 1.12
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Seal Fate Daggers #1 - 31/8/12 http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=yhesoxzAoGcZVMhM
Seal Fate Daggers #2 - 30/8/13 http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=jhxbMxtiZGcZV0xc
Very little has changed with this old staple PvP build. The idea with this build is huge burst damage with fast combo point generation.
Variations include dropping Vigor and picking up the last rank of Imp Ambush, and/or dropping Imp SnD for some Imp Poisons, and/or getting different ranks in the Teir 2 Subtlety tree (Opportunity being moved does little unfortunately here).

Strong Points: Still highly effective in PvP with incredible burst damage and a good mid-range raiding and solo build.
Weak Points: Positional daggers, not nerfed but not really buffed in 1.12, poor build for instance boss farming.
Gear Requirements: Seal Fate needs a high crit rate to be effective, solid AP gear, little +hit.

PvP Rating: 9/10
Solo PvE Rating: 6.5/10
Raid DPS Rating: 6.5/10
Solo Boss Rating: 3/10
1.12 Subjective Rating: 6/10

Sword Combat #1 - 20/31/0 http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=jhecoxZG0EzzVzxbo
Sword Combat #2 - 17/34/0 http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=jhe0oxZGoVbrVzxfo
Not a whole lot of change here either for a 20/31 build, but some changes to a more heavy 17/34 build. There are some points to throw around here as seen in the two linked builds; the point here is high sustained DPS. The WepEx should help greatly against lvl63 mobs and the 1min reduction of AR should boost damage well in a raid environment. However, the combat tree seems unnecessarily weighted now with non-DPS boosting talents (like Imp Kick, Imp Sprint, and Endurance) which although is nice in a PvP build seems to work against the nature of the point going combat. IMHO the combat tree still needs work.

Strong Points: Still solid sustained DPS, nice boost with WepEx in raids, very effective in solo play, non-positional.
Weak Points: Still a poor PvP build even when you pickup the new talents in Combat, did not get a sizeable buff in raid DPS, suffers from mediocre end-game sword itemization.
Gear Requirements: High AP, heavy +hit, some +crit

PvP Rating: 2/10 - 4/10
Solo PvE Rating: 9/10
Raid DPS Rating: 8/10
Solo Boss Rating; 9/10
1.12 Subjective Rating: 6/10

Stunlock Hemo #1 - 21/3/27 http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=yheboxkZhZxrfohGRo
Stunlock Hemo #2 (New in 1.12) - 24/3/24 http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=yheboxkhZhZxrfobhRo
While Hemo has gained some popularity over the last few patches, it still has been pretty rare. Hemo has always been thought of as the stunlockers PvP build since you are sacrificing a lot of burst and some sustained DPS for a load of stun options. Although not much has changed in the Assassination tree (some points can be moved around from the new Murder to Imp Poisons and/or SnD for raiding), the Subtlety tree has been vastly changed. One seemingly nasty build is 24/3/24 which picks up the new KS talent which works VERY well with the stunning nature of this build. Most likely this will become a more popular PvP build.

Strong Points: Excellent stunlock PvP build, good soloing, non-positional, non-weapon type dependant.
Weak Points: Poor burst DPS, weak against stun immune mobs/opponents, cooldown dependant.
Gear Requirements: High AP, some +crit, little +hit

PvP Rating: 7-10 - 9/10
Solo PvE Rating: 7/10
Raid DPS Rating: 6/10
Solo Boss Rating: 3/10
1.12 Subjective Rating: 6/10 - 7/10

Prep Daggers - 21/8/22 http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=yhe0oxuZGcZVMjsc0o
Not a lot of change here in 1.12, this still remains a solid PvP spec with fairly good utlity elsewhere. Build options include dropping Imp Sap for Setup or perhaps Serrated Blades.

Strong Points: Solid PvP performance, good soloing. (with Imp Sap nice instance utility)
Weak Points: Extremely cooldown dependant, mediocre raid performance, positional daggers.
Gear Required: Solid amount of AP and +crit, some +hit.

PvP Rating: 7/10 - 9/10
Solo PvE Rating: 6/10
Raid DPS Rating: 6/10
Solo Boss Rating: 5/10
Subjective 1.12 Rating: 6/10 - 7/10

Combat Daggers #1 - 15/31/5 http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=nbxcoLZGcVb0Ez0roV
Combat Daggers #2 - 16/28/7 http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=j0xfoxZGcVb0Ez0bZVb
Without a doubt the most drastically updated and buffed build in 1.12, combat daggers will undoubtedly reign supreme for raid DPS. There are a lot of options here, but most choices will come down to whether or not you want AR. Expect to see a ton of raiding rogues with this build to solidify their top DPS slot.

Strong Points: Massive sustained raid DPS.
Weak Points: Very poor PvP, poor build for instance boss farming, positional daggers, mediocre soloing.
Gear Requirements: High AP, good amount of +hit & +crit.

PvP Rating: 2/10
Solo PvE Rating: 5/10
Raid DPS Rating: 10/10
Solo Boss Rating: 2/10
1.12 Subjective Rating: 2/10 - 10/10 (It all depends on where you are headed with your rogue)

Seal Fate Combat - 30/21/0 http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=nheboxtVZG0Ez0mz
A black sheep build which I initally wrote off pretty quickly but now has my attention. This build has the possibility of both high sustained DPS and burst damage. The catch is gear; you'll need high-end loot to really appreacate the power of this build, if you are in rares or a few epics this build just isn't going to impress.

Strong Points: Scales with gear, solid DPS in solo and raids, PvP potential, non-positional.
Weak Points: Extremely gear dependant, lacks openers in PvP, some cooldown dependance.
Gear Requirements: Needs all stats; +crit, AP, +hit

PvP Rating: 6/10 - 8/10
Solo PvE Rating: 6/10 - 10/10
Raid DPS Rating: 5/10 - 9/10
Solo Boss Rating: 6/10 - 9/10
1.12 Subjective Rating: 6/10 - 9/10

Possible New Builds in 1.12
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Premed - 17/3/31 http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=jhe0oxZhZxrfohhRqo
With so many changes to the Subtlety tree it appears that a full Subtlety build is now viable. This is a heavy utilitarian build which is designed to perform well in all areas of play. There can also be some pretty good variation in talents here; the new Dirty Deeds an easily be swapped with Heightened Senses | Imp Sap instead of Setup | Ruthlessness instead of Murder & Imp SnD. The test realm will tell us how well this build performs.

Strong Points: Apparent soild performance in raids, solo, and PvP. Non-positional, non-weapon type dependant, good combo point generation.
Weak Points: Most likely will not excel in any one area that the old-school builds will, cooldown dependant.
Gear Requirements: Heavy AP, good +crit, little +hit

PvP Rating: 6/10
Solo PvE Rating: 7/10 - 8/10
Raid DPS Rating: 6/10 - 7/10
Solo Boss Rating: 7/10 - 8/10
1.12 Subjective Rating: 6/10 - 8/10

Premed Daggers 12/8/31 - http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=jhe0oZGcZVMeshMoVo
A new possibility which drops Lethality in favor of more contollable PvP action. This build has great PvP potential but will most likely not be a powerful DPS raid or solo spec. The test realm will tell us if losing Lethality will cripple this build.

Strong Points: Potential for excellent PvP action.
Weak Points: Appears weak in raid DPS and soloing, positional daggers.
Gear Requirements: Heavy AP & +crit, little +hit.

PvP Rating: 8/10 - 10/10
Solo PvE Rating: 5/10
Raid DPS Rating: 3/10 - 5/10
Solo Boss rating: 3/10 - 5/10
Subjective 1.12 Rating: 5/10 - 8/10

Hemo Combat - 0/26/25 http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=yZhxVb0VtZxrfohGoo
Another possible 1.12 build, it is unclear if this will be viable since we're totally dropping the Assassination tree. We're trading off the +crit, combo point generation, and crit bonuses of Lethality for the heavy sustained white damage in the Combat tree. Most likely this will not be a good PvP build, but it does have potential in PvE. Mace spec was chosen here but swords will probably also be viable (not daggers or fists though). Again, the test realm will tell if this build will perform or fall flat.

Strong Points: Has promise for general PvE, non-positional, apparent solid sustained DPS.
Weak Points: Poor burst damage and PvP potential, mediocre raid performance expected, slow combo point generation, weapon spec dependant (swords or maces).
Gear Requirements: Heavy AP, solid +hit & +crit

PvP Rating: 2/10 - 3/10
Solo PvE Rating: 7/10 - 9/10
Raid DPS Rating: 5/10 - 7/10
Solo Boss Rating; 5/10 - 7/10
1.12 Subjective Rating: 5/10 - 7/10

Seal Fate Hemo - 30/0/21 http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=yhe0oxpAZZxrfobh0o
A new 1.12 build possible with the movement of hemo, this build wille easily be the new king of combo point generation. This has good PvP and general PvE potential but a run on the test realm will be needed to see it's effectiveness against tried and true builds.

Strong Points: Extremely fast combo point generation, non-positional, non-weapon type dependant, possible good all-around build.
Weak Points: Most likely will not excel in any one area that the old-school builds will, fairly cooldown dependant.
Gear Requirements: Heavy amounts of AP and +crit, little +hit.

PvP Rating: 6/10 - 8/10
Solo PvE Rating: 6/10 - 7/10
Raid DPS Rating: 5/10 - 6/10
Solo Boss Rating: 5/10 - 6/10
Subjective 1.12 Rating: 6/10 - 7/10

Cood Blood Hemo 21/0/30 - http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=yheboxkZZxbjohhRq
Another build with good potential in 1.12, this could really since with very high AP. Not only does this look like a solid all-around build, the PvP potential looks extremely promising also. Test

ATTENTION TO ALL WHO READ THIS GUIDE

Guys, this the outdated guide from July 05...

THIS IS OLD INFORMATION - Broken Links, misinformation. This information was accurate over a year ago in patch 1.7 but not since. Report this to be taken down. The original author "Chefassassin" and I made up this original guide. This is a repost from someone else and thus will never be edited. There is a newer guide compiled by myself below. It includes ALL the infomation from this one and much MUCH (maybe too much) more.

The wrong guide got stickied, the updated one is found here:
