Q u o t e:

Well, the only response I can really give is that I don't intend to participate in holiday achievements anymore in that case. I'm really not comfortable with going 10 months in and then somehow missing the right RNG rolls and having most of a year's effort wasted, so there's no sense in stressing over it or trying to get it if it's going to be left completely out of my hands whether or not I can accomplish the goal.

Stop looking at the big picture like that in my opinion. Remember a 500 mile journey starts with a single step.

We just had both the Squashling and the Hallowed Helm drop together and the same person won both.

Let's keep this thread civil. I've been deleting trolling responses on both sides, but I'd prefer if I didn't have to do that.

Q u o t e:

If you could theoretically track how many times a player killed a boss over the 15 day period, and how many got the achievement. If that percentage was less than 100% even if the player had put their full effort into it, would you still be happy? If so, that is a cruel way of looking at a video game title.

didn't they say they didn't plan on EVERYONE getting it?
especially not the first freaking time. otherwise achievements litterally become something you can just whip right out and yay! that was one holiday of fun, maybe next year ill have an alt or something that'll need to do it. if anything i think they should LOWER the rates.

I'm sick of world of pvpcraft.

RNG brings out the worst in people.

Sorry Kis, but when a player's dedication and/or skill is completely thrown out the window because they're unlucky, it's going to piss them off.

Q u o t e:
No, I understand completely that the cause of the outcry is the chance involved in completing the achievement. That's why we upped the drop rates significantly from last year. If the Squashling drop had remained as it was last year, it would be in the same realm as A Mask For All Occasions.

I understand that people would much rather have the title be 100% guaranteed. I've read the threads. I comprehend the concern, I truly do.

This is where we differ in opinion. Both rely on luck alone (the pet drop just adds the added effect of needing to win a roll too.) Both require you to probably log on the game far more than you probably should (lets just say there is a reason so many people who play video games are often joked about never leaving their houses - this achievement is one of those reasons).

However at least with the mask, you simply have to spend 2 minutes switching between the alts you want it with and then can go back to you normal lives for a bit of time away from the computer. The mask also does not require you to join teams with no summons just to up your own chances at getting it while dwindling someone else's.

If you have already accepted and are fine with the fact that the majority of people are most likely gonna have to keep trying for it next year to complete it and maybe the year after that too, then what made the mask one so different? It could also be completed next year if you do not get it this time.

But nobody else in the group got it, despite them having just as much of a claim to the pet and the helm!

I have a question for you Picard, just for my own clarification...

Is acquiring the drops the issue with you or acquiring the title?

If the title/achievement didn't exist would you care? sorry if this was clarified earlier.

Q u o t e:

I did that quite a bit earlier in the day. The explanation by the OP was a sound one, so I thought I'd give it a nod.

I greatly appreciate the feedback you and others are giving, but giving the feedback does not necessarily mean we must acquiesce to your desires. We're working from the larger picture of how common we'd like the achievements to be, and it's only natural you'd prefer it to be more common than it is.

COMMON?? The mount im sorry to say seems to have more of a retarded drop rate then the POS squashling. This is a bad judgment call IMHO om blizzards part.

I cant run the HHM 20+ times a day because on my server if you have already summoned him, people wont take you. So I look at all of these other people on these boards who get it by doing the very thing people try and avoid.

They take advantage of groups and give them one less summon and then they get the drop. Great way to reward the people who take advantage of others.

What about making the item lootable by all players (like a key or quest item is) so that everyone in the group who worked on those kills and has a claim to it gets the reward. Lower the drop rates if need be for balance. This would eliminate the jealousy and hostility towards people who get lucky with their rolls.

So what if there were no achievement attached to this thing? Would people be nearly as up in arms about it?

My thought is no, they would not be.

The problem here is, at its root, that people are associating achievements with certain console games. In WoW, it's not like that.

This is a game that a LOT of people play and there are a LOT of achievements for all of them.

The outcry simply would not have happened had there not been an achievement attached.

That said, what's an achievement at the end of the day? Something you can briefly smile about and then forget. It's really not that big of a deal, at least to the point of, say, complaining passionately.

There are far bigger things about which to complain passionately.

If i didn't need it for the title, i would gladly pass on the squashling to someone who loved collecting pets.

I'm sure there are MANY more people like me.

This achievement screws pet collectors, title collectors, and people who want the drake. SCREWS them. Unlinking this thing from the title achievement would help more players than it would hurt (I.E. those few people who got really lucky on their drops AND hate having the same title as anyone else)

I totally aggree. Up the droprate on the pet and let everyone get it in the party. This would solve everyone's issue

It's not as rare as you make it out to be, provided an individual does it the average times per day (5) over the course of the event. That said, based on that metric, the A Mask For All Occasions is far, far more difficult to get probability-wise, hence why it is not a part of the meta-achievement. There's a line, essentially. The mask achievement was over that line, whereas Sinister Calling is not.

EDIT: Ooglop, the Horseman's mount is ten times as rare as the Squashling, in terms of pure numbers. You've just had a very strange run of personal luck.

Effort versus reward. I'm not going to spend a year trying to get something that Blizzard is determined most of the player base won't be allowed to have. I'm not going to waste time trying to win the lottery. If it was as simple as dropping a ticket in the bucket, sure. But I'm not going to bend over backwards and spend hours upon hours trying to get something that Blizzard is leaving up to the RNG. Especially because I know my luck, I'll ride it right up until the last month and then miss one of the stupid RNG drops, and I'll be crushed to have gotten that close only to be forced to wait an entire year to try again. Effort versus reward. WAAAAY too much effort to just leave it up to the RNG to decide whether or not I'm worth rewarding.
