That sucks.

I'm Canadian but I've never flown out directly from Canada. Normally go down to Detroit and fly out because I go to the states more than anywhere else in Canada(which is sad really... I want to see more of Canada considering I was born here :P)

Two months after 9/11, we went to visit some relatives because the tickets were way cheaper and the distance allowed us to only see each other once a year. Well, they took my moms crochet hook.... a crochet hook!

I guess anything can be a weapon though.

Psst... make me a haiku please :)

One of my favorite quotes. Sometime I'm going to write this in some nice lettering, frame it and hang it in my livingroom.

I thought the quote was "He who will trade a little liberty for a little security deserves neither and loses both."

Supposedly the original quote is:
"Sell not virtue to purchase wealth, nor Liberty to purchase power."
And then there were like 20 variants of it afterwards, all variants of what you have above.

I just went over your list, and not a thing there feels like a violation in the least. Maybe you're just paranoid? Scared too easy over what "big brother" (who you elected) is gonna do.

Q u o t e:
Remember David Sobel? In 2005 he used the FOIA to discover that the FBI was monitoring 13 **US citizens** without their knowledge. That's all kinds of wrong.

Actually, it sort of depends on WHY those people were being monitored, now doesn't it? The fact that you didn't put this in context shows that you think it's STAND-ALONE wrong, which shows me you know nothing about how law enforcement, let alone the justice system which needs all kinds of evidence to convict even the most obvious criminals, works.

Q u o t e:
Also you don't see a problem with them questioning him about porn on his computer? Or what he thought of our government's foreign policy? Wow guess about 65% of America would be considered terrorists judging by the fact about that many are against the war in Iraq and the way our government is being run right now.

And you sir ALSO apparently have no experience in law enforcement. When you are questioning someone, you don't just ask "Did you do X, Y, Z illegal things?" You ask them all sorts of things to see if they have various motives. (Notice the question from Stupid's original story: "Would you do something to make a 'point'?") You also ask them about completely unrelated things just to get them to TALK - interrogators and policemen in general are trained to watch for tell-tale signs in even innocent conversation.

Let me repeat myself: The vast majority of you are so uninformed - THAT is what's really scary, not some personal questions, a five hour wait, and an innocent man properly labeled as innocent at the end of the day!

Q u o t e:
Here is an old paraphrase of a wise man's quote...a founding father in case you think some left wing liberal came up with it (the concept is probably shocking to you):
"He who would trade liberty for some temporary security, deserves neither liberty nor security"

The phrase is a platitude based on a truth that I can agree with, but I doubt the man would agree that trading bringing Kool-aid on board a flight for the assurance of no liquid explosives being on board (after it's shown this is a REAL threat, something you apparently don't seem to understand) results in a loss of liberty. And calling the founding fathers "liberal" is like calling Jesus "liberal" - the word is relative to its day and age. Text after historical text shows the founding fathers were far more CONSERVATIVE than the average American of this day. Get it straight, and try expanding your news-and-opinion-gathering horizons. I watch and listen to both spectrums.

This is the best thing I've seen on the WoW forums in a long time. Stupid, thanks for sharing your experience and thanks for the thoughtful discourse on the rights of the individual being eroded.

It seems we are seeing yet another cultural divide where protection at any price is preferred to liberty by some, while some of us look at history and see what governments can do with unbridled power.

Tuhljin, your ad-hominem attacks on the WoW Community are not appreciated, nor do they add any credence to your argument.

Earlier you claimed I could not tell the difference between vigilance and paranoia, with regards to how they handled the bomb situation, and here I'm going to have to accuse you of the same.

I didn't elect Big Brother. I voted libertarian.

This is truly a legendary thread and sorry to hear you had to go threw all of that . I suppose in some dark way it was reassuring that they went threw all that trouble and harrasment just to make sure it was nothing. But if they did not and the plane had blown up I suppose they would be in trouble for that. Can't win or lose now adays...

GL and when you get contacted to make a movie about this can I play the Pilot ;)

Yeah, ad-hominem attacks. Do you even know what that means? I'm attacking your IDEAS, not you personally - the exact opposite of what you claim. And your claim that this is an attack on the WoW Community as a whole is unsubstantiated.

And to use an over-wrought posting technique:

Q u o t e:
protection is preferred to freedom-to-do-whatever-I-want-no-matter-the-consequence by some

Fixed.

Oh yes I realize they were attempting to develop motive. Something that usually happens when a CRIME has occurred. You know, formally charged and all that. We have a guy dropping an Ipod in the toilet and immediately notifying authorities.

Also, I would call a band that initiates the overthrow of a government and implements a whole new government as pretty liberal. At least I'm sure the English thought of them as liberals.

Although, I wasn't calling Ben Franklin liberal. These days, any time a "conservative" type states no civil liberties are in danger in our current political environment, whomever argues with them is instantly labelled either:
1. Unpatriotic.
2. A left wing liberal.
So I was stating by today's standards, Ben Franklin's open thoughts and wisdom would most likely be called "liberal" despite the contrary.

Although with the definition of Liberal, I would be happy to call myself one (the Republican party it responsible for turning it into a "bad word"):
"Favoring proposals for reform, open to new ideas for progress, and tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others; broad-minded."

Wrong:
You said,
The vast majority of you are so uninformed...

Who are you to say who is uninformed or isn't? This is not at all connected to ideas, it is an attack on the competence of those posting that disagree with you. Against the man, (ad hominem).
